How long before you need to buy new clothes?

Standing in front of my wardrobe earlier, moaning that I’ve got nothing to wear, but realistically I think I could go a good few years without needing to buy anything.

How long could you go without buying new clothes?

10 years I reckon

Thighdentitycrisis · 01/12/2024 22:52

I could go all of next year except I need new walking boots as mine leak. I have enough decent clothes to wear but would probably need to wash things to wear again more frequently

Imnotarestaurant · 01/12/2024 23:30

I think I could probably go 5-10 years as well. I don’t buy a lot, but just keep things for years! Even things like underwear and swimwear, I have enough to last for a few years.

I suppose a lot of it depends on your personal definition of when an item becomes unwearable. I have a few shirts that have small pulls or bobbling on them that I will still wear for work, but I know other people would get rid of them.

Theorertically, it should last eight years, but in reality, I tend to buy seasonally. Not for any particular reason, just to lift my spirits. I honestly can't resist.

DrZaraCarmichael · 02/12/2024 08:34

I don't care about my wardrobe looking "fresh". This year I have bought a couple of new pairs of jeans, some underwear, a new jacket. I have bought other stuff, all second hand.

AuntyEntropy · 02/12/2024 08:40

Almost indefinitely except for
a) my North Face which is on its last legs and is my only really warm waterproof hooded coat
b) knickers which lose their elastic nowadays, so if I want to have 7 in decent condition to wear for a week before washing I'd probably need to start replacing them in about 3 years.

daffodilandtulip · 02/12/2024 08:45

I've been losing weight and I can barely wear something twice before it looks silly. I know it's a nice problem to have but it's also a bit infuriating. Currently down to two pairs and leggings and two fleecy tops 🙈

Forever! I need a 12 step program for my Vinted addiction

Same 😆

henlake7 · 02/12/2024 15:38

I could probably go many years (if I didnt love buying clothes!).
Only thing I realistically will 'need' to buy next year is new pants, Primark ones really dont last that long.

coolcahuna · 02/12/2024 17:09

I could probably cope with never buying another thing but fashion and clothes is my favourite thing. I have committed to a no new clothes challenge with my friend (shoes, bags also included) unless it's from my vinted funds!.

I have found my whole style has changed in the last five years. I don't need to be as formal at work post covid, ditched heels and bigger bags. Rarely go out in the evening now so need brunch, lunch, theatre type stuff more than going out stuff. I've written a list of what I actually need to improve my wardrobe (skirts to go with my millions of tops!).

I think I've got a much clearer idea of my style now and know what suits me. No more black tops or dresses allowed ever..they do nothing for me.

Ooh. I reckon my (12 pairs of) jeans would die within 2 years by wearing through at the thighs. Jumpers/t shirts/dresses though - a decade.

Interesting. For me, 12 pairs of jeans would easily last a decade as they are pretty hard wearing. T-shirts and jumpers are replaced much more frequently. Light coloured t-shirts, in particular, rarely survive longer than 2 years as they tend get stained or go out of shape.

Even high quality wool jumpers look tired after 3 or 4 years of regular use.

I was really answering the OP's question of how long I could go before buying new clothes - due to the volume I have. I must have about 50 t shirts. The individual items wouldn't last a decade of regular use but I could pretty much wear each one once a month for a long time.

I struggle to find jeans to fit and rarely have more than 2 pairs on the go at once (I currently have 3, which is something of a record). I wear almost nothing else from Sept/Oct to about April, and expect a pair to last a couple of years at least.

Doggymummar · 06/12/2024 17:58

I love this thread. I'm 55 and trying to buy items to last until I die now. I just got rid of two pairs of m and s leather knee boots I had since about 2000 and replaced them with a pair that were so expensive I had to pay in installments! I'm losing weight and no replaced anything except Bras and pants, I WFH so I'm only seen head and shoulders. I bought some of those fake collars from Amazon so I can change up my work jumpers. For summer I have ten black and 10 white linen t-shirts I wear daily with Uniqlo wide leg flannel trousers which I am wearing today. I have 5pairs the same but different colours linen trousers for Summer.

Once I reach my desired weight I will start replacing anything that looks daft. My XL dressing gown could probs be medium but I like that it's a symbol of my previous weight.

mdinbc · 06/12/2024 19:22

I find at 63 that I am replacing those items that wear out, and my wardrobe ha lots of items that are for going out or holidays. Of course those items will never really wear out!

So I could live with my current items for years, but of course I will try to keep up with latest styles, and get a longing for a new jacket or skirt that I do not need.

suzuki, I don't know how you go through jeans so quickly, each pair of mine will last for 5 or 6 year. I really only have 4 on rotation.

Suzuki76 · 07/12/2024 18:08

I don't know, I guess I have fat thighs. I do mainly buy Sainsbury's which are quite thin and stretchy as they fit well. They just get holes where my thighs rub. I'm not talking about mainly-cotton, proper denim Levi's here.

Nearlyadoctor · 08/06/2025 21:32

Thought I’d tried to revive this thread to see how people were getting on not buying anything this year .
I have been horrendous of late , so my latest plan is when my new trainers and a pair of Levi’s arrive this week to stop.
Dd is off to Uni in September so will need more money from us, and I really feel I could manage to buy nothing until she finishes her course.
I won’t tell anyone in RL I’m thinking about trying this as I know that just sets me up to fail.
