Does Head & Shoulders/washing-up liquid really lighten dyed too dark hair?

Not for the first time box hair colour has turned out way too dark - was hoping for a head of glossy chestnut but it's almost black and I look like a witch!

I used Castings 'Iced Truffle' and it's certainly given me very glossy hair - can almost see my reflection in it! But it's too dark and to add insult to injury didn't cover the grey roots very well.

Washing up liquid will do the job. Condition well afterwards.

Hi OP, I remember a hairdresser telling me that Head and Shoulders will strip and fade colour.

Might it be time to embrace the grey? I'm 42 and grey. Stopped dyeing 3 years ago and never looked back. Quite empowering actually!

I'll have a go with washing up liquid first, as have that in obviously, see how that goes then move on to Head & Shoulders if I have to.

I was heading towards embracing the grey, sort of, at 70 I'm old enough! The usual brunette who goes a bit lighter, few highlights, root tint, mingle with the grey but it all got a bit tedious and expensive, then it started to look a bit too light, so to save money and time I took to the box dye - serves me right.

Darker hair (not bloody jet black!) suits me better but I really did have a shock this morning when I caught a glimpse of myself in the bathroom mirror! Grin

I used to use washing up liquid when i bo dyed and it was too dark.

You can also buy colour removers for about £10 that will strip lots of colour out, but in both cases as the poster above said, condition your hair lots afterwards

I went straight for the colour remover personally. It stinks but it was gone in one go.

Vosene very good for this too! First off I would try a colour remover and follow the directions to a T. See where you get to and you should be able to use the shade you want. If you decide to try the shampoo route, for a few consecutive nights do a double shampoo and a decent condition. It should take it down a few shades, but you’ll probably need another colour to get the ‘warm’ element

I’ve had so many disasters with box colour. Even if I picked the lightest of lightest brown my hair would go black! Fairy will help a small bit but tbh the colour remover is the job. I used ColourB4 from Boots. Yes it’s stinks but every trace of black will be gone.
