Silver necklaces leave dark marks on my jumpers :(

I have several long sterling silver necklaces, some are expensive from well-known jewellers, others cheaper. They all leave black marks on my clothes when I wear them on top of clothes. I clean them using silver baths or with soap, toothpaste, bicarbonate, I tried everything. I am fed up with having to wash my lovely cashmere jumpers after every wear. In consequence, I rarely wear my silver necklaces these days but they are beautiful and I would love to wear them. If you had the same issue and manage to solve it I would love your help

Coat them in clear nail varnish?

You need to use a cleaner with anti tarnish. You can also take it to a jewellers and ask them to clean and anti tarnish coat your silver. How do you store it? I have little cloth bags which are impregnated with something to prevent oxidation.

@unsync is correct it to do oxidation and slight movement against your clothing

Try Goddards Long Term Silver Polish, it protects them from oxidization. But I'm surprised they can be so as tarnished to leave marks on your clothes without them looking black instead of silver

ah, thank you so much, I didn’t know about Goddard long term silver polish, I’ll order it now.
I’ll look for anti-tarnish coating too.
It’s frustrating, I clean them before each wear, I wipe them dry on a towel (which remains clean) and then, somehow, at the end of the day my clothes have dark marks where the chain sat.

In terms of storing, I am storing them in a jewellery drawer which has compartments for each piece of jewellery. The anti-oxidation cloth bags sound good but I wouldn’t remember which piece of jewellery is stored in which bag so I may find that a bit frustrating. Perhaps I can try adding a tag to each bag.

Maybe it's reacting with your skin ?

I wear long silver necklaces and have never had this problem.
i would consider what you are washing your clothes e.g. fabric softener.
i never wear anything silver in a swimming pool or a jacuzzi (as the silver then goes black very quickly with the chorine) so there could be a possibility there is a reaction to some fabric softener?

You can use dinky ziplock bags, cheap and cheerful ones from eBay ( I have loads of jewellery so bulk buy) as long as the bag is sealed it prevents the oxidisation
Edited to say nothing super fancy in my loads of jewelry I've just collected it for years , I love a good accessory so bags scarves (used to be shoes , but not now) and jewellery

I often use vinegar to rinse my clothes so I wonder if the vinegar is causing the silver to oxidise

OP- that could very will be the issue as a quick web search says vinegar can speed up the oxidation process.

My jewellery always tarnishes,(disclaimer, I don't wear very expensive jewelry and I like to keep it on so it is not surprising) I've started only buying tarnish free jewelry from Hey Harper or similar.
