Brogues - unflattering?

I love brogues but am only 5'3 with very short legs . I want a comfortable pair of shoes not heels. Not sure if they make me look even shorter and fatter though.

They are classic and I'm sure look fine the only shoes that are likely to make you look taller and slimmer are stilettos and who wants the faff of wearing those.

My DD calls the man shoes but I don't think she's seen my gold ones

Coolblur · 29/11/2024 12:18

No one can really answer that.
They are unflattering on me, but then I have large feet and skinny ankles.
Try some on with what you might wear them with and see what you think.

For comfy flat shoes I would go straight to trainers, or do you need something smart?

Brogues are what my kids wear for school so that would put me off but that’s personal. I think the chunkier brogue styles are more flattering if you have chunkier legs. (I have short solid legs).

TheOGCCL · 29/11/2024 12:30

I think it depends on the toe shape, as ones with more of an almond toe are going to be better than very round. As someone with short legs though, I never look right in traditional brogues. They are too chunky and do the opposite of elegonate the legs.

If only someone would make a brogue/trainer hybrid. I would buy!

What's your budget? I didn't like my silhouette in my slightly dated but v expensive almond-toed brogues, but Grenson shoes hit very different. Lots of gorgeous shapes of flat, stylish shoes there - they're not cheap, but have good sales.

HippoStraw · 29/11/2024 12:45

Depends what you wear them with I think. A slightly above the knee skirt or dress is fine. A longer one isn’t good imo. A cropped or ankle showing trouser is also fine, but a longer pair doesn’t work I don’t think.

I think the Clarks Hamble Oaks look nice. They're not at all chunky but the heel seems a fraction higher than others so they're a bit more feminine than "dad shoe" brogues iyswim.

@spanieleyes22 You speak as if you’re the only woman in the world who’s 5’3.Grin D’you think shoe manufacturers only sell to the tiny proportion of 6ft women in the country?

Just try on the shoes you like and see how you feel in them!

(Speaking as someone 5’3 …)

spanieleyes22 · 29/11/2024 15:47

Thanks all yes I think I need to go and try some on. Loafers seem to be back in fashion - pointy toe ones mjght be a bit better for my stumpy legs !!

Well no but manufacturers don't care if they look unflattering on me ha ha.

I used to see loads of these a few years ago - brogue uppers with trainer-ish soles. Grenson did them and then loads of others copied. Not sure oyf they're still around much
