Prone to spots: what's the best skincare you've used?

I've had spots since I was 11 and still get them now (27) and I'm sick of it!

Don't think it's acne, but I usually have about 3 or 4 large, red painful spots at a time, as well as loads of black heads. YUK!

Please please tell me your skin-care secrets, ex-spotty ladies!

x

I don't use anything else but Nivea. Can't beat it for price and effect in my experience.

Vichy normaderm cleanser and moisturiser. Magic stuff!
It's quite expensive but you only need a tiny amount.

southeastastra · 29/04/2008 09:42

use something light, heavy moisturisers (and expensive ones) bring me out in spots.

lovemyshoes and AmIWhatandWhy - did you have spotty skin before?

I used Oxy 10 for years and years (worked sometimes) but have given it up recently for gentler products and find my skin not much better or worse. It's depressing me.

Dermalogica changed my life (ok slight exaggeration). I only had occasional facials and bought the products they recommended at beautyflash.co.uk (cheaper than in salons). Now that I'm a SAHM, no money for any facials, alas, but I still use the products. They are pricey but a little goes a long way.

AmIWhatAndWhy · 29/04/2008 10:05

I used to, but with hindsight I think it was due to the pill I was on. This stuff really works though.

Irritatingly I had reasonably good skin as a teenager but became spottier as I grew older: 2 or 3 really nasty hard red lumps on my chin every month which lasted 10 days or more so most of the time I had the chin of an adolescent boy but face of a middle aged woman. i used use Clarins but changed a while ago to Roc: made by dermatologists, it has worked for me and half the price of Clarins. I started using it after a beautician recommended it after giving me a lovely Dermatologica facial so it may work too

ranting · 29/04/2008 10:13

Dermalogica is wonderful, Roc is pretty good too. And I speak as one who had really bad acne as a teen and post pg.

Proactiv is great. Google it to find out how to order.

Laugs · 29/04/2008 13:41

Great, thanks for all your help. I'll look at the prices of them all! Just become a SAHM so am on a tight budget.

Do you have a lot of dairy products?

Apparently may cause spots in some people according to Embarrassing Illness program last night.

I've been amazed at the effectiveness of Asda's own brand range (in blue & green packaging, think it's called Clearoderm or similar), especially the face wash, exfoliant & moisturiser. It's worked wonders for me and is as cheap as chips

artydeb · 29/04/2008 14:04

Clean and Clear sensitive cleansing lotion is good - I have rosacea as well as spots and have found this cleanses well and doesn't sting or make my face oilier. I used to always wash my face until we did our bathroom up and I switched to this and its much calmer since. Is only a couple of pounds but works well. 1 Bad point though - smells a bit weird.

Laugs · 29/04/2008 14:56

Yeah, I saw that too GGirl. Don't really eat that much dairy, but might try cutting it out altogether

Clean & Clear is the cleanser I used for years, but didn't really make much difference as far as I could tell, although it did make my face feel nice and clean
