What supplements do you take? Help me through the maze

So this is a combined Style & Beauty/ Health question but thought I’d put it on here if that’s ok.

I’m increasingly thinking that supplements are more likely to have good effects for me than various lotions. But not sure where to start.

I’m mid 40s, expect I should probably start collagen??

I guess Vit D is a good idea for everyone in winter. Then what? magnesium? Zinc? B vitamins? What do they actually do 😆 I don’t know what I need.
I know I am low in iron… not quite anaemic but borderline.

If anyone has any specific brands they recommend that would be most helpful. There are so many I get overwhelmed and do nothing.

What is the Mobu pouch @fivebyfivebuffy please?

When do you all take these supplements- all at once in the morning/evening? Or do they have to be taken at special times??

Probiotics

amzn.eu/d/3djULVj

As for reasons for taking them

The wellwoman covers anything I'm missing in my diet and I don't eat oily fish so it's got the oils too, also folic acid which I'm deficient in
Vitamin D as I'm still deficient (gone from 4 to 66)
Prescription iron as I'm deficient
Probiotics for my stomach as I have a lot of antibiotics

spanglypen · 27/11/2024 19:59

My research on collagen supplements suggests it's not worth it.

I take high strength:
vit d
Omega 3
Magnesium

B12 sometimes
Probiotics sometimes

Iron can really irritate your stomach and upset your microbiome. Best to get a profusion if you're deficient.

I’ve gone a bit mad with supplements lately as turning 50 soon and trying to make sure I feel as good as possible. I take marine collagen, vitamin d daily (as I am very careful in the sun and previously had a deficiency) and I have just started a creatine supplement which also contains magnesium. The creatine is meant to help with energy and muscle recovery and the magnesium is for sleep. I am pleased with the collagen, too early to say for sure about the creatine. It is all quite expensive though.

Only take vitamin D. Interestingly, when I was undergoing chemo, this is the only vitamin they advised taking.

Everyone, from my MDT to acupuncturist and naturopath have all advised that eating well, as well as a wide variety of food is better than taking supplements and vitamins.

After chemo, I took probiotics whilst I was rebuilding my gut biome. However, the brand I prefer was getting increasingly hard to find, so switched back to sprouts like alfalfa (which I wasn't allowed during treatment) and fermented foods better produce a better variety. Instead of taking a calcium supplement, I eat foods as have been told it's more effective that way - chemo and an early menopause has left me with osteopenia. A chronometer online or in app form is really useful for tracking how much you consume. I also eat a lot of oily fish rather than take supplements. That said, I did use to take krill oil which was excellent.

@Havalona

Would you mind linking which Magnesium Glycerate & Calcium you recommend? TIA.

I am in Ireland and get them from Holland and Barrett over here.

New Nordic Magic Magnesium Glycinate 600mg 60 Tablets | Holland & Barrett

and the calcium also from H+B, these are from the UK website.

H&B Calcium 600mg & Vit D 240 Tablets | Holland & Barrett

I take a vit D spray in the morning also. All within safe limits in the Winter.

Havalona · 27/11/2024 21:26

@CarpeVitam You can get less expensive versions of Magnesium Glycinate in H+B, they are probably all the same!

CarpeVitam · 27/11/2024 22:30

@Havalona, thank you.

You can get blood tests for iron and vit D from Superdrug, you post it back to them for results.
Def worth going to GP and asking for a health MOT though. Also monitor your diet to see if you are short anywhere.

Honestly I take a shit-ton!LOL😆
omega 3 and turmeric (dodgy joints)
magnesium (sleep)
calcium (bones)
Vit D (obvi...its winter!)
vit b12 and iodine (vegan)
allicin, or concentrated garlic (prone to gum disease so preventative)

I didnt start them all at once and I dont take full doses of everything, just top ups where I know I come up short. I swear I was fine before menopause....🙄

Don't take calcium, its really not a good idea, you should take Vitamin k2 (mk 7) instead, goes hand in hand with your Vit D3,
K2 helps keep calcium out for your organs and blood and puts it where is needs to be, in your bones,

LoserWinner · 21/01/2025 01:05

What’s your diet like? If you have a lot of plant-based stuff, decent amounts of dairy and moderate amounts of meat, you may not need supplements in pill or powder form.

username964 · 21/01/2025 01:16

I take:

Magnesium Glycinate
Vitamin D
Probiotics
Omega 3
Multi vitamin
B complex

Crushed23 · 21/01/2025 01:17

I take the following every day, all year round:

Omega 3-6-9
L-Carnitine
Magnesium
Zinc
Vitamin D
Vitamin B12
Collagen powder

Adding photo in case anyone is interested in the specific supplements / dosage.
