Has anyone bought this River Island dress? It's been a disaster for me and I need advice!

I bought this dress (from River Island directly but couldn't find exact link). Loved it for the first five minutes until it started moulting in the most ridiculous way. I wore it to a party and was honestly embarrassed by end of the night. There was a significant trail of feathers left in my wake everywhere I went.
I can understand a couple of feathers shedding, but this was extreme and has put me off ever wearing it again.
I brought it back tothe store, saying it was faulty/flawed and essentially unwearable, only to be told that the dress was perfect and that's what is to be expected with this style. According to the manager, apparently, no one else has experienced any problems. She gave me the address of the UK office to complain to (I'm in Ireland) and I will contact them, but before I do, I'm keen to to some background investigation to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Update - I was instructed to return dress, which I’ve done. Obviously will await their response.
To all those who have said it’s par for the course, I really beg to differ. The dress cost €88 and began to shed from the moment I put it on at home. It went from bad to worse at venue, I’m sticking to my guns here - the dress is not fit for purpose.

Well done for sticking with it OP and I completely agree. Some people have more money than sense it seems, never mind the disregard for the planet - throwaway fashion is killing it.

JaneandtheLaundry · 05/12/2024 15:19

Good on you OP. Glad you're finally getting somewhere with it by the sounds of it. I'd be raging if I'd spent a small fortune on a dress for it to turn out to be shite.

River Island are expensive. Did you know years ago they were called Chelsea Girl. Bieng of a certain retired age now I look back and I loved them then. They sound a disaster now

Do you remember when they first turned into River Island? They had a sort of dark wood vibe? Found a picture.

I was very amused to see Mumsnet had a Promoted by mumsnet post that started after this thread.

Do we read the posts to help? All I can say is I do, but sometimes there are some very sarcastic. replies which I think could be a bit more understanding? Am I being over simplistic?

I bought the same dress and left a trail of feathers behind, I was really embarrassed, the bottom cast so much it was bald, I spent nearly £70 and can't wear it again

I'm returning mine tomorrow, I collected about 40 feathers and have them in a bag, very dissatisfied

For anyone interested, I received an email from River Island yesterday, stating that they were refunding me the cost of the dress.
Whilst there was no apology or admission there was anything wrong with dress, I’m still happy I pursued it. Good result, I think.

Great news OP, good luck getting yours sorted @Max149 .

pictoosh · 10/01/2025 17:11

I was interested. Glad you got a full refund. There is no point in clothing you can't feasibly wear. Good result.

Max149 · 12/01/2025 11:53

I got a full refund too and no fuss, thanks for the prompt

KittytheHare · 19/01/2025 11:30

@Max149 delighted you were refunded also.
