If I am not supposed to wear black or white…

….next to my face (this from having my colours done years ago), what on earth can I wear with a skirt I’ve just made? It’s a fab retro fabric of orange, black and white and I can really only see it going with a plain black T shirt.

You could have a black top but with a fairly low cut neckline so that there is a lot of skin between your face and the black top.
Or try orange, if that is a colour that works for you? Maybe mustard/gold?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 24/11/2024 22:32

You could just ignore that diktat.

Yes, this! Or black t shirt with an orange scarf or some sort of necklace? Or just not too high cut.

Screamingabdabz · 24/11/2024 22:43

What about a strong peach colour?

RosesAndHellebores · 24/11/2024 22:45

@ChoccyJules can we see the skirt please?

CortadoPlease · 24/11/2024 23:06

Dark Chocolate brown? There’s probably a shade of white/ivory that suits you - were you advised not to wear pure white?

ChoccyJules · 25/11/2024 20:08

Yes, not to wear pure white and that’s definitely what I see in the skirt fabric, so off-white would look….off.

I should have said that I don’t like lower tops (my upper chest gets cold 🙄) but I also don’t tend to wear scarves….

I will get it uploaded to show the colours.

Wear the white T-shirt, it'll be fine. I don't really think "having colours done" is always useful, I would say wear what you feel good in and what you think complements a skirt or whatever. It'll look good, I'm sure!

Cornettoninja · 25/11/2024 20:13

Scarves are a fairly simple solution but if you tend towards bolder colours I would look for bold jewellery, definitely necklaces, to meet that rule.

ChoccyJules · 29/11/2024 09:48

Here it is. I think I will buy a couple of plain supermarket Ts and work out whether black or white is better.

What season are you? Just thinking if you want a colour that suits you we should start with that.
I wonder if a golden beige or turquoise might look nice. Ooh or dark green.
And if you go for a colour that doesnt suit you, a sheer version is better.

FiveTreeHill · 29/11/2024 09:56

I would just wear either and add some jewellry to soften the contrast

But colours are a guide at best. You don't always have to wear colours that flatter you

heldinadream · 29/11/2024 10:00

Black or white tee shirt and a coloured scarf draped around your neck. With that pattern you can do a scarf in pink or turquoise or green. Experiment!

onamatofpea · 29/11/2024 10:04

Seasons are just a guide so you can buy what really suits you. If you're wearing a string skirt then wearing a black or white t shirt will be fine! Stick a necklace on if you can be bothered. Really I wouldn't give it any more thought.

Enko · 29/11/2024 10:04

Soft blue would look amazing with that pattern.

onamatofpea · 29/11/2024 10:05

I would absolutely not be adding more colours to the palette with a skirt like that - you want it to shine! Three colours per outfit is a good rule - gold necklace perhaps but not a coloured scarf.

ZippyLilacStork · 29/11/2024 10:11

I would wear black with that.
But then I don’t believe in the whole colour season thing.
I genuinely think people look better in something the like because even if objectively it washes them out or something, the look happier and more confident therefore better.
I ‘should’ wear jewel colours but I think they are clown like and feel silly in them so I don’t own it like people say I ‘should’ so they don’t look as good as a more muted palette.

Sassysoonwins · 29/11/2024 10:29

When I had my colours done she told me there is more than one white. She laid about 7 different silks against me and said I should steer clear of yellow, grey and cream whites, but that brilliant or blue or pinky whites worked.

In your case I would wear a black top but with an orange scarf or necklace maybe? Or whichever type of white looks best against your skin.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 29/11/2024 10:41

I'm autumn so shouldn't wear black near my face but I do, and definitely would with that skirt.

On the (rare) days that I care about looking my absolute best while wearing black I'll use makeup to bring the life back to my complexion. Bright eyes, reasonably bold lips, lots of warmth through bronzer.

OuterSpaceCadet · 29/11/2024 10:52

Extremely dark navy?

I have a jumper that was sold (vinted) as black but that is the darkest blue imaginable. It reminds me of fountain pen ink. The difference is subtle, I expect it reads as black to most people. But I swear it looks better on me than black things do.

Soupwithstring · 29/11/2024 10:53

I'd wear that with forest green or navy.

Potentiallyplausible · 29/11/2024 10:59

A brown or green?

This just made think of Father Ted and his priest socks.
Never buy black socks in a lay person shop - they’ll shaft you every time.

WorriedRelative · 29/11/2024 11:48

Wear a black top with either gold jewellery or orange costume jewellery. Say some chunky beads over the jumper.

Or use some fabric scraps from making the skirt to make a headband, hair tie, scarf or necklace.

warofthetimemachines · 29/11/2024 11:55

Try Pale blue?
