Googled ‘outfits for a 50 year old woman’ and it did not end well. Lost weight and my way- intervention needed

I’ve lost nearly 3 stone and can finally wear all the things I never had the confidence to do before. Only thing is my previous style (wide leg trousers, long trench, classic thin jumper), that took years to work out no longer suits me. I googled outfits for a 50 year old woman and good lord.
I’m nearly 50, size 12, want to be on trend but classy.
Where do I shop, who do I follow, what is even in fashion?
What are you all wearing?

Your post made me laugh! Maybe don't google by age, but for the style/s that interest you?

Theres a french woman on youtube that I follow, Marie Anne someone or other, she is very funny (probably being deadly serious though) about de frumping and not looking old and doing your best to look good. I love her and she has some good tips

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/11/2024 11:02

How about just Google outfits, and leave out the age.. Seriously, check out YouTube, there’s some great style tips etc on there.

BeetledBrow · 24/11/2024 11:19

I’m considerably older than you, @Donewiththisshit - and it would never, ever have occurred to me to google such a thing.

There are as many ways to dress ‘over 50’ as there are women on the planet, surely?

I don’t understand why wide leg trousers, long trench, classic thin jumper isn’t working for you any more? It’s a pretty standard outfit for women of any age and any size. But I’ll take your word for it. (I can’t wear charcoal colours since I stopped colouring my hair, so 🤷🏽‍♀️)

Game0fCrones · 24/11/2024 11:21

Try Googling mid-size, over 40s fashion and style. That should get more relatable hits.

TooMuchRedMaybe · 24/11/2024 11:25

I think Me+Em, Sezane and Ba&sh are good brands for the style you like.

Fireworknight · 24/11/2024 11:28

Congratulations on your weight loss.

I found getting a shape and style and analysis
helped me to find clothes that suit me, not other people. Think about your ‘style personality’ and embrace it. Some days I’m more boho, other days more classic.

Also, wear clothes you want to , so if you like fatface, Seasalt etc, and they suit you, ignore all the clothes snobs who say you must only buy from Hush, Cos and Toast for example.

FlangeSprocket · 24/11/2024 11:31

While agree its style not age that should inform how you dress, I get why you might google this when you feel a bit at sea with clothes - you are sort of trying to describe yourself. I have done the same and similarly the results were not great, so it's more a question of refining what you want to ask and identifying a look you like. But then there is always the issue (well for me) of the clothes I like being on 6 ft size 2 models who are about 12, and I find it very hard to translate onto my thickening waist, huge boobs and 5' 6 frame. If you have lost weight I guess it's about working out what shapes suit you now.

Fireworknight · 24/11/2024 11:32

Petitelife_colours - on instragram gives good tips also

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 24/11/2024 11:33

Don't search by age, find some people on Instagram whose style you like the look of, and take inspiration.
I'm nearly 50, 5ft 11, 12 top half/14 bottom half and prefer unfussy, pattern and frill-free classic shapes that suit my shape. I tend to go for wide leg trousers in fluid fabrics, fitted top, midi or maxi dresses in waisted styles, wide leg/girlfriend jeans and cashmere jumper, simple jewellery. For me it's more about the cut and the fabric feeling right if I want to feel my best. But am also perfectly at home in jeans, hoody and trainers or gym/dog walking stuff.

I recommend Natasha Musson The Secret Stylist on Facebook. Loads of great content and ideas for all personalities.

Superworm24 · 24/11/2024 11:36

Stop googling with an age!

I did a bit of research into kibbe body types and colour seasons (thanks tiktok!). There is list of flattering clothing for different body shapes out there. Then I found photos of people who had similar body shape and colouring to me and used them for some inspiration. I tried similar shaped trousers, tops and dresses. Then I built my whole wardrobe around good quality basics.

EveryDayisFriday · 24/11/2024 11:39

Dress for your colouring and body shape, not your age.
I'm a deep warm autumn and a size 16 hourglass. I don't wear pinks, pastels, greys and white, I will wear green, brown, red, orange, cream and yellow. Jeans are always dark navy or brown, not black. Shape wise I wear v neck, not high neck/ high waisted not low/ bootcut not wide leg/ pencil skirt not a line.

Just had a look. She’s lovely - and indeed very funny!

A lot of horizontal stripes though which I actually think can be quite aging stretched across sagging busts or the hint of a mum-tum.

FlangeSprocket · 24/11/2024 11:50

Not sure if it's your style, but Erica Davies is good on instagram - she is great with colour and uses a huge range of shops from George at Asda to high end boutiques.

Lentilweaver · 24/11/2024 12:07

I am 52, a size 12, and wear wide leg trousers, a long trench and thin jumpers. Why can't you wear that? 🤔
Just wear what you want and like. Without looking at age.

I think this sounds stylish and appropriate op. Maybe you are being a bit hard on yourself in terms of your current stylings?

Alternatively, maybe you are wanting to revert to a younger look, as the implication is you missed doing it when younger? I think there are potential pitfalls with this approach. Lots of their 50’s with nice figures would wear wide legs, trench coats etc. I’m not really sure where you are wanting to take it?

Calliopespa · 24/11/2024 12:26

Also op the internet can be a wild place.

I’d suggest narrowing it down a bit and choosing a few brands you like the look of. A few flicks through their catalogues or websites will start to feed ideas for you. You can choose more upmarket and expensive brands to get ideas then work back to affordable versions of those stylings.

As a pp suggested Me and Em, Ba&sh are good for someone of your profile, as are Max Mara, jigsaw maybe. I like Claudie Pierlot, and Zadig and Voltaire sometimes have nice things. And I quite like Toast though I see that’s been called snobby …

Lentilweaver · 24/11/2024 12:34

If I had a lot of money- I don't- I would just dress like Jennifer Aniston in the Morning Show. I think that's mostly Max Mara.

Westfacing · 24/11/2024 12:55

Oh don't search by age - gawd knows what would come up for me at 70! I'm size 12 and 5'2". Young women can wear anything and look good but trenchcoats swamp me and look a bit dated, IMO.

Earlier I went out in:

https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E471545-000/00?colorDisplayCode=08&sizeDisplayCode=004 in dark grey, basically black

https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E469903-000/00?colorDisplayCode=57&sizeDisplayCode=003 in olive

These trousers are great for shorties like me as you can roll up the hems and they look fine!

And an old John Lewis burnt orange cashmere jumper and Penelope Chilvers suede Chelsea boots

Wow. Haven't seen Erica Davies since January - she's half the woman she was! She looks fantastic!

That picture looks like fashion for woman over 70. I don't know any 50 year olds who dress like that!!!!
