80s fashion memories

I was having a chat with a similar aged colleague today (57) and a couple of our much younger colleagues (both in their early 20s). We were talking about the differences between 'going out' outfits back then and now. I love how younger people now often wear much more comfortable footwear and the younger ones were asking us what we used to wear for a night out. Our essentials were:

High heels (my bunions absolutely do not thank me for this now)
Alexis Colby style shoulder pads
Paisley blouse
Diamante brooch on said paisley blouse
Pencil skirt or peg trousers
Black or barely black sheer tights
Clutch bag
Dangly earrings - my favourites were silver fans
Absolutely no jacket at all regardless of the (Glasgow in our case) weather.
Byzance, Rive Gauche or Ysatis perfume

I should also add that by the end of this conversation we were nearly crying with laughter and I would encourage anyone to have a similar chat with someone younger than you. 😂. Would love to hear your memories.

Very, very short denim mini with bare legs and pale blue court shoe heels, or pink pumps. Often paired with my RELAX cutdown tshirt.
Black stretchy tube mini skirt, also very short, with bare legs, 6"high black patent mules ( they looked stunning but I couldn't walk in them at all, as my feet were so on tiptoe that there was no flexibility left) . Sometimes I would wear the skirt with black tights and suede pixie boots and big jumper during the day, stripping it off to reveal tiny little tshirt underneath or sometimes I'd wear it with a longline black lace bra and and a coloured silk shirt over the top, probably with over -the- knee black suede flat boots.
My other favourite going out outfit was a lace ankle length black sunray pleated skirt that had a matching shirt. Underneath would be either black or bright coloured leggings with a matching vest top, and ballet shoes.
Big, long hair, often crimped and streaked with pink or burgundy Crazy Colour, smokey eyes, and Rive Gauche or Femme perfume.
Fun times!

All of these plus plastic jewellery! And I was a Durrannie so I had those canvas shoes, the white cottony gilet, the pastel t shirt. I remember taking a hoot of Nick Rhodes to my hairdressers and saying I wanted to look like that. Unfortunately it was the local “old lady” salon and I came out looking more like Yootha Joyce

Does anyone remember rara skirts/dresses.?
I was obsessed with them.

I had a ra ra skirt with braces. God I looked ridiculous in it but thought I looked amazing!

I mean, you did look amazing at the time I'm.sure. Looking back at the photos now though, it's all very funny and looks so dated. How did time pass by so quickly?

TitaniasAss · 23/11/2024 15:55

I also had a pink dress with puffball skirt that I absolutely loved. Wore it with matching pink stilettos, hair permed within an inch of its life. Happy days!

Oh this is so true. Time just goes in a flash. I saw a video a while ago of someone trying to buy a ticket to days gone by, I'll try to find it.

I had ra ra skirts and dresses in early 80s aged 10-12 ish . Also at that time there was a big trend for grey and burgundy together. I had a lovely pair of grey pointy shoes with burgundy trim and bow! They were for parties. Also, drop-waisted dresses.

By the mid 80s when I was 15, I was trying to be Madonna. Ripped vests with bra straps showing, borrowed my dad’s shirt to wear over the top. Being a Catholic my mum would let me wear my rosary beads !!! 😂
