Why don't women have amazing skin compared to men?

Like many women I buy various skincare products. Cleansers, serums, retinol, eye creams, moisturisers etc. I buy more now I'm in my 30s and starting to see the first signs of ageing.

But most men I know never moisturise and use the same shower gel to wash their body, face and hair. They would think eye cream is something you use when you have an eye infection.

As women tend to use all these beauty products, surely they should look better and years younger than men the same age? But usually, they don't. They look the same age, despite most men using next to nothing in the way of skincare.

I know spf is essential from a sun safety POV and my skin does feel dry if I don't use a moisturiser. And of course, skin should be cleansed to remove make up etc.

Are we being conned - Does skincare actually do anything?

Also have you seen Hugh Grant lately? He's as wrinkly as a bloodhound ( I love him, btw). But if Nicole Kidman or Jennifer Aniston tried that, they wouldn't get any work.

But they also very likely had work done.
No way the creams have produced that effect.

Yes, that too.

I do skincare because I enjoy it, the feeling of a cleansing balm and then a warm flannel is bliss
And I do see men with red, flaky, dry or sunburned skin that I think probably should use something!

If I just washed my face I would have acne everywhere so I use a cleanser and tret

I think men quite often have better looking skin until.lster in life. Many older men who have only every scrubbed their face with Pears soap or Original Souce certainly start to look like they have never touched moisturiser or spf. My dad's skin at nearly 70 is pretty good but he has used face washes, was a big fan of a rice face scrub from the body shop in the late 90s, moisturiser, even a tinted men's moisturiser at one point!

I suspect it's all those creams etc. I rarely used to do anything to my skin and as long as I washed the dirt off it was fine. Then my skin started getting dry so I added a moisturiser .I think I still have a fairy minimal routine.

Morning
Wash with water
Serum, hyaluronic acid and aloe vera
Acid toner
Either Cien ageing moisturiser or
E45 facial sunscreen.

Evening
Wash with water
Serum as day
Tret + whatever else dermatica put with it (about 5 times a night.
Nivea night

Most of these are to counteract my dryness. The acid toner is from a beauty box and I won't replace it.

Gosh I’m amazed you think that is minimal, I would say that was extreme.

Men have thicker skin, shaving is basically exfoliation, higher collagen content, more oil.

you can’t really compare them.

Plenty of evidence to say the beauty products ARE the problem.

The latest trend is for girls aged ten to thirteen to use skincare products designed for much older sign and it's been advised not to do this because it damages their skin.

I very rarely wore make up as a teen and in my twenties and I definitely think it helped. I think it catches up with you eventually though!

In what world do women not look better than men? Men do not age well, on the whole, although we are conditioned to believe they do. But women generally have better skin and fewer wrinkles.

This. Some of you are clearly not single. The men on dating apps my age look like dried up husks, whereas my skin is pink and pretty smooth still.

I don’t agree with this. I frequently see couples in their 50s and 60s and the women look much older than the men. As PP have said, men maintain collagen and generally have thicker skin than women with more oil so they age much better facially. I think the decline in oestrogen for women also has a dramatic effect on our faces.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 21/11/2024 21:19

Hmm, going by the people I know, the women have better skin than the men.

Anyway, it’s socially acceptable for men to age and get called rugged when they’re wrinkly. Women don’t tend to get the same treatment, generally.

Livinghappy · 21/11/2024 21:20

I think sunscreen is the major difference but women also have hormonal fluctuations later in life which doesn't affect.

Ladyswhatlunch · 21/11/2024 21:21

Singleandproud · 21/11/2024 20:57

@GettingStuffed I'm not quite sure that counts as minimal.

Out of interest if dryness is your issue how is your general water intake during the day?

I chuck Olay Beauty Fluid on my face morning and night and the Blue Nivea body moisturiser on my body 3 times a week. My skin is clear and soft, and I use it more as protection from the weather than anything else.

I look forward to aging and a wrinkly, interesting face, growing old is an honour many don't get so I have no intention of messing with the process but my skin is faring for better than my hair which seems to have another load of silver everytime I look in the mirror.

Edited

Agree wrinkles can make a face characterful. The accompanying sagging jowls and turkey neck not so much!

Fireworknight · 21/11/2024 21:22

I always tonight it’s because men shave.

Do you mean you think men wear more sunscreen and it's that that makes their skin look better? I'm not sure I'd agree that men are more likely to wear suncream on their face.

Kitkat1523 · 21/11/2024 21:24

I’m 59….I use an exfoliating scrub that cost £2.35 on my face…..I use a cheap mosituriser on my face ….that’s it…..I look just fine

Lyannaa · 21/11/2024 21:24

Men have thicker skins which is why they can appear to not age as much. Although most men start to lose hair in their late 20s which ages them. So swings and roundabouts.

It is mainly down to genetics but skincare does make a difference. I started having regular facials when I was 25 and I think it has paid off.

Frozensnow · 21/11/2024 21:27

I think hormones play a part. When I was pregnant my skin went all patchy with hyper pigmentation that never properly went away. Even with factor 50, I have to wear a cap because the sun will bring all the patchiness out. DH can get his face sunburnt and just end up with a nice tan, no patchiness. Very annoying.

Chuchuchu · 21/11/2024 21:28

Until I got to my 50’s and developed a chronic illness I was often told how nice my skin was….seeing as I’ve only ever used water and basic supermarket brand moisturiser ,and never wear makeup I put it down to genetics and a good diet ,as my mum and daughters all have lovely skin.

Bloom15 · 21/11/2024 21:38

My skin is much softer and nicer than DH's. I look younger too but I always wear SPF so I think it is probably that over anything else

5128gap · 21/11/2024 21:43

As far as the efficacy of skin care and products goes, suffice to say, I wish I'd extended my routine to include my hands and chest. They look like they belong to my face's mother.

weareallcats · 21/11/2024 22:03

My skin is significantly better than dh’s, despite him having much more melanin (I have very pale, Celtic skin and he is 1/4 South Asian). I have stayed out of the sun and he hasn’t, it is probably down to that more than all the creams I use (including tret).

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 21/11/2024 22:12

I don't see men with nicer skin than women? I'm intrigued you've been seeing this.

Bodiceandbraces · 21/11/2024 22:21

I wear a ton of makeup , as long as I can remember and always a heavy coverage base with a high spf. I can’t remember a day I haven’t worn it honestly done my teens . I feel it’s protected my skin a bit, from wrinkles at least ,probably the spf, so I’m not sure on the argument that make up ruins skin.

SkylarH · 21/11/2024 22:27

I've come to believe it's all a bit of a con TBH.

Beauty care is so expensive and a lot of women are religious about applying this and that. Does it really work? I'm sceptical.

Xrayspexxx · 21/11/2024 22:31

Women’s skin does tend to look a lot nicer than men’s in my experience.
