I'm tired of my salt and pepper hair...pic included.

I went all natural about 6 years ago... I'm nearly 57. I was hoping for beautiful silver hair but nope... white at the parting and grey streaks throughout my mid brown hair. It isn't horrible and the streaks are quite pretty in a way, but it's not going to be all silver any time soon (my Mum is 77 and still dark at the back).

I think I want to colour it again as I suddenly feel old and washed out, but which way to go? I've never been blonde and am a bit scared of that, but dark again might be worse! I'm wondering if a hairdresser can make blend my grey streaks with blonde ones to overall move me greyer/icy blonde? My hair looks a bit more goldy in the pic due to the lights but in daylight those streaks are grey. It's still brown underneath and at the back.
I know nothing about hair colouring other than lobbing on a box die so any advice as to what to ask for? ( It also needs a cut, but I'm growing out the pixie cut of regret from August 23 so am only having 6 monthly trims!)

hard to say from the photo as it looks like you’ve had blond highlights throughout! It looks nice

Floisme · 21/11/2024 18:23

I'm sorry if this is unhelpful but I think it looks lovely.

You also look great to me but, if you feel tired and like you need a lift, I'd work out what it would cost you to maintain a professional colouring for a year, and spend it on clothes.

Isthisrightandlegal · 21/11/2024 18:24

It really doesn’t look that bad at all. I follow a hairdresser on Instagram called Rosie baylis who does just grey hair and some of the after pictures look amazing (I think it’s quite expensive though )

Bigearringsbigsmile · 21/11/2024 18:25

Go to a good salon and get it done properly. It will make you feel so much better.

StormingNorman · 21/11/2024 18:31

“Grey blending” is your friend. The hairdresser will give you blonde highlights to blend the darker and grey together. It’s why Jennifer Anniston is looking so blonde lately!

Hairdressers tend to stick closely to your natural colour and only use as much blonde as needed to camouflage the greys.

Thistooshallpsss · 21/11/2024 19:18

I had blond highlights and an overall colour on my dark but greying hair for over a decade and it gave me such a lift although it felt expensive. Then the pandemic came and I embraced grey but I do still miss the colour tbh.

A strong purple shampoo or leave in toner would brighten things up without comitting to dye again. It would eventually wash out as opposed to having to grow it out when you dye.

AgathaLioness · 21/11/2024 19:44

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon but I think it looks lovely. Could you try adding colour in a different way - change your make up or get your colours done and add pops of colour close to your face?

Wherethewildthingsfart · 21/11/2024 19:45

The light definitely makes it look golden but it looks fab, I would go for golden highlights!

Penguinsmum · 21/11/2024 20:23

You look great for 57! I hope to look as good when I'm your age ❤️

GettingStuffed · 21/11/2024 20:30

They look great. I have about half an inch of silver at the front of my face , the rest is my natural colour.

I have less grey hair BB than my children.

Parapaderapa · 21/11/2024 21:02

I think you look great. Age is irrelevant, if you look good, you look good!!

goingdownfighting · 21/11/2024 21:07

Your hair looks great.

I think all the slebs are having herringbone highlights where the roots are blended into the natural tones of your hair. It probably won't take much.

Sonolanona · 21/11/2024 21:08

Thank you for the nice comments ( face on I'm haggard as hell sadly and definitely look my age!)
I wish I was someone who could 'do' clothes and makeup...but the last time I wore makeup was 1990 for my wedding and even then I'd washed it off before the reception... I'm a dog walking, allotmenteer who works with small children ..utterly unglamorous. I spend money on wheelbarrows and compost Grin and live in jeans or hareem pants!

I don't mind spending some money on my hair though. I dont suppose anyone can recommend a good colourist in Oxfordshire?

I actually really like the contrast you have between the lights and the dark.

I'm heading towards highlights (mid 40s) as I'm tired of plucking out greys. I had them a couple of years ago and really liked it. I went with warm honey as my colouring is warm.

ForPearlViper · 21/11/2024 22:39

When I was growing out my colour I used Bleach's Fade to Grey. It takes all the yellow and warm shades out of your hair so you end up with a grey and graphite look that people pay a lot of money at the hairdresser to get . It blends it all together nicely. It is the look that people are aiming for when they use purple/blue shampoo but don't get.
