Canada goose

I will be heading to Canada in a few months. Wondering if it is worth purchasing one of Canada goose jackets there. 2 questions here. Does it make sense buying their jacket for the UK winter. Is it worth buying in Canada and bring here or it is not worth bothering?

I recall a thread on CG a while back and the conclusion was 1) they are too warm for almost all UK winter days and 2) they are unethical (real fur)

KripKrapKrisp · 18/11/2024 23:32

Really cruel brand! They torture geese and ducks for their feathers to stuff in the coats and use coyote skin for the hoods. Only a scumbag is proud to wear that brand IMO

I read that they don’t use natural skin and fur staring from 2022?

Are you happy to spend £££ condoning animal cruelty?

I eat meat and wear leather shoes. It is a cruel world.

The duck/goose down is no better (actually probably worse, at least for fur the animal is dead)

Not sure about the fx or purchase rights but just wanted to say that the CG I was gifted 4 years ago is the best quality and warmest coat I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

Am currently saving £20 a month (since 2020) so that I can afford to replace it as and when it does finally fall apart. Could not live without one now.

Where do you live? North? I am in London. If you are in the south, is it not too warm to wear?

My son-in-law living in the UK, wears his CG jacket that we purchased as a gift to him loads.
Personally also look at MacKage (sp might be off) canadian and better quality than CG.

mdinbc · 18/11/2024 23:48

I was just going to suggest Mackage; it's a good Canadian Brand. I don't think you will get a better deal here in Canada than anywhere else, or ordering on line. All companies seem to be international now, and their prices reflect that.

Wishfives · 18/11/2024 23:53

Wasn't there a phase of charming young gentlemen robbing people for their Canada Goose jackets? They are pretty desirable to the ones with the little "man bags" it would seem .

Wishfives · 19/11/2024 00:07

Incorrect link, I can't link but you can Google yourself if interested

momager1 · 19/11/2024 00:55

I used to live in Canada, and I can tell you that Canada Goose are very expensive and honestly not worth the money (ethics aside)

Amyknows · 19/11/2024 03:07

I'm in north west London and I have one. Love it, warm, waterproof and looks good too. I have the one with the black logo. Looks very nice. I bought a parka one for dh for work and he gets compliments all the time. For warmth and functionality you won't go wrong.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 19/11/2024 04:10

The same company own Mackage and another company called Soia and Kyo. I’m a short arse who has just treated herself to a full length S&K down puffer that comes down to my ankles.

I am in Canada, it gets to -30 and below here. I have a CG Expedition jacket and it has to be REALLY cold before I will wear it.

Do you remember which model it is?

South. Could not be not more grateful for it now. A month ago it was way too warm to wear.

LettyToretto · 20/11/2024 00:41

I have the Shelburne with fur trim hood

I love it. Loads of pockets. Looks brand new after 3 years. I live in London.

For the animal rights lot, if you wear leather shoes, eat anything that casts a shadow and thus had habitat destroyed for farming, animal-tested cosmetics, pay Thames Water or any other company who dumps sewage in natural water courses, use fossil fuels...you're no better.

mathanxiety · 20/11/2024 01:35

They're far too warm for the UK. People don't even wear them all that much in the northern midwest of the US where I live. They are mainly worn by gang bangers, among whom they're considered a status symbol.

If you want to buy a winter coat in Canada, look for Kanuk, NorthFace, Eddie Bauer, Land's End, or LLBean.

Missing thr point but just curious about the definition of 'gang banger'?

Presume it doesn't mean one who attends a 'Gang Bang'?

Bjorkdidit · 20/11/2024 04:38

I'm fascinated by people who wear these coats in less cold environments. Aren't they absolutely roasting? I'd imagine they're too warm even now once you start moving about and I've seen people wearing them even in summer.

DP has always coveted a North Face McMurdo parka but realistically knows that he'd never wear it because he's the type of man who wears knee shorts unless there's snow on the ground.

Onheretoomuch · 20/11/2024 06:58

Well worth it if you spend a lot of time outdoors. I wear mine watching DD play sport when it’s bitterly cold and windy. Great for fireworks night and camping etc. it’s -2 here this morning so I’ll be grateful for it today.

how often do you wear it in London? Couple of days in the winter or most of days?

@PoliteEagle - I got it out maybe a week ago and I won't put it away until maybe early March/late Feb

Admittedly some of that will see me wearing it undone, but the deep insulated pockets also mean I don't need to wear gloves. There's a high neck so no need for a scarf either.

I'd buy sooner rather than later. I think mine 3 years ago was either 995 or 1195 and it's now more like 1500.
