Is there a way of having no greys consistently?!

Any way at all? How often can I dye it at home?? I’m not ready to rock grey just yet but the grey hairs just keep coming.

I’m not sure but following. Since my third pregnancy mine have multiplied ugh. I find it very ageing and am still in my 30s and not ready for it!

How many do you have? Mine is bad in patches but not all over just yet. I keep moving my parting but have dark hair so it’s v obvious.

I do have a good colourist who I’ve seen a few times. She does a service called “painting the silver” where she hand paints out the grey hairs and colour matches them with my original colour. If I keep my parting in a good location then I don’t really get obvious roots from this method. But it’s ££££££££ and so I’m planning to experiment with semi permanents that I can just wash in at home. I’ve ordered a Revlon one I saw recommended on another thread here.

Root spray.

Good colourist, regularly.

Products to make the colour last and keep looking good.

And like Cher from Clueless, try not to wander into any bad lighting.

Hair grows out of your head so I'm not quite sure what you're expecting?! You can't do anything about the hair that hasn't grown yet and it grows constantly. As a natural blond when I dyed it dark brown I had to do it monthly, my hair grows about a centimeter per month. I'm less fussed about it looking perfect these days so I dye my roots every three months to cover greys.

blueshoes · 15/11/2024 23:52

You colour your whole head of hair (professionally) and then do a home dye root top up every 4 weeks.

I use Clairol Nice 'n Easy. Costs me about 6 pounds a box. Each box lasts me 2-3 root touch ups. It costs me 40 pounds a year to not have greys.

@Dinosaurus86 wow that sounds insane to colour each hair but I’d definitely love to have that done. Unfortunate I’m on more of the budget end of embracing these greys. I have large patches and a beautiful rainbow of grey right across the outline of my forehead.

Behind the front of my forehead is dark hair, centre parting is almost entirely grey, at the back hardly any greys. Wish I could swap the natural coloured back with the front!

The hand painting sounds slightly more precise than it is - she does get quite a few of the other strands too, but it’s pretty good and preserves my original colour well. I’ve been having it done about every 3 months but not sure I can realistically afford to keep it up.

It’s unfortunate you say about the ring around your forehead. So far mine are in big patches at the top and front (back is also annoyingly grey-free) but just behind forehead line. I have a side parting to hide the worst of it.

In your case I would have some highlights put in at the top/front to blend in the growth and in between appointments use one of those wash in colour enhancements. I’m looking at experimenting with these myself. I think I was reading on the Josh Wood colour gloss page that if you have dark hair with highlights then you should get an ice/blonde champagne one.

Or you could try what I’m going to attempt next which is either a proper semi permanent dye (I’ve ordered the Revlon Professional Nutri Colour Filter) or one of those shampoo/conditioners that tint the greys - I tried the Plantur one before I went to the colourist but it made my hair feel weird. There’s also a John Frieda one on my radar.

Obviously you can box dye your whole head but I’m trying to avoid it as long as possible. I still have a decent amount of my natural colour, which I want to keep, and then you end up with a sharper root line. I’m planning probably to slowly grow blonde instead as I think dark roots are less ageing than light ones.

EmotionalSupportBiscuit · 16/11/2024 08:51

Yes you can have no grey consistently, you just have to be about 19 😄

Other suggestions I’ve seen on similar threads:

Plantur colour shampoo (although not sure it would be any better than any colour-depositing shampoo eg John Frieda do them in red or brown tones).

Grey blending highlights at the hairdresser, lighter than your dark hair to try and disguise the grey without a harsh dye line.

Home colour with a semi permanent - get a shade lighter than you think as they all come out darker. They fade over a number of washes. They will build up on the ends so just do the roots when reapplying and only pull it down the lengths for the last 5 mins of development time. (This is what I do.)

Ah I was typing as @Dinosaurus86 was posting! Similar thinking to her points :)

RubyRooRed · 16/11/2024 08:59

I do my roots every 2-3 weeks at home.
I have a bowl and hair dye brush set that I got in Poundland so that I can brush the dye into the roots properly
I use dye that’s only a few £ from home bargains so it’s low cost maintenance for me.
I get balayage twice a year so have low maintenance highlights with that and dark roots so it’s easy to maintain the dark roots , just paint it on …

Have you tried the "colour wow" type products? Hair mascara and hair chalks or eyeshadow type products?

If you've got highlights of different colours these paint in type products look better as they blend. I never found exactly the right shade but I got one that wasn't too bad. Makes regrowth look less obvious.

So I'd suggest you get highlights next time you are in the hairdresser (could be different shades of brown, or a warm shade to match your current dark shade if you have brown hair or some blondes etc whatever). Then try the hair paint type products. They come in a chunky brush. Doesn't take long.

Our skin goes paler as we age so sometimes blonde highlights are kinder and warmer if they match your current hair colour. If you like blonde.

Hi @blueshoes your method caught my eye as I always feel like I waste a whole box of dye when I need to touch up roots. Are you saying you just mix some and the rest can be sealed and mixed later? This would be brilliant.

I use the Clairol Nice 'n Easy. There is one tube of Permanent Colour Creme and one bottle of Activator. You normally mix both of them together to do a whole head of hair.

Because I am only touching up the roots, I don't need to mix all of it. I roughly squeeze out half the tube (cap the rest) and pour out half the white bottle (screw the lid back on for the rest) and mix just half to use. The bottle is white and has no markers but if you put it to the light, you can roughly gauge through the translucent bottle how much to pour out if it is half. For example, if the light shows the amount in the bottle is about 2 cm depth, then pour out roughly one cm depth. You can tell how much you poured out from the bottle by holding the remainder in the bottle back to the light. I find you don't have to be all that precise and still get a good result.

I used to squeeze out one third but found it was not enough to cover all the roots, so now I use half.

You can thank me later 😂

Instant Coffee Super Cool Colour | Hair | Superdrug

I use this one , I really don't want to be using any permanent or semi permanent dye , this f=gives a wash of colour , grabs hold of my grey hairs pretty well , lasts well and smells gorgeous .
It's the only colour in this range that I'd use , the rest are too bright

tobee · 16/11/2024 23:22

I'm trying defy grey shampoo and conditioner. And have been using different spray root touch up type aerosols. There are variety of brands.

I tried the touch up mascara in the past - too sticky/like I'd put tar on my head.

I tried the touch up powder in the past - too awkward to use accurately, too itchy

NB I'm having to stop permanent dye as developed an allergy 😟
