You could fry an egg on my face

My face is OILY. The oiliest skin I've ever encountered.

After a few hours of wearing makeup, my face is slick with oil and the makeup has all separated and looks god awful.

I work 12 hour shifts so I'd really like to tackle this problem.

I use high end makeup that targeted towards lily skin, inclusive EL double wear, Laura Mercier powder and Urban Decay setting spray. I use Nars creamy concealer under my eyes, which separates after about ten minutes (no joke).

My skin is well hydrated and moisturised.

Is this just something I have to live with?

I used Clarins lotus oil when going through an oily patch some years ago. Might be worth a shot if you haven’t already tried it - my skin probably wasn’t quite as oily as you describe though.

Geneticsbunny · 13/11/2024 07:27

Have you tried putting niacinamide into your skincare regime? Is made quite a difference to how oily my skin is

MixedCouple2 · 13/11/2024 07:29

What skin care do you use?

I was the same in my 20's and I would carry bloting paper with me.

Please look on YT Dr Andrea Dray a dermatologist

WhereAreWeNow · 13/11/2024 07:32

I have very oily skin. Blotting paper is much better than powder for make up fixes during the day. I press really hard on places like my nose - almost like I'm squeezing my pores - and it really does mattify without just piling more make up on top of the oil slick.
You can get them cheaply on Amazon.

As a younger woman I rarely wore make-up other than lipstick as it just didn't stay on and over the years I tried all sorts of products to no avail. I used to envy friends who would get made-up at the beauty counters for an evening out - tried it once and it had almost disappeared by the time I got home!

If it's any consolation, I'm old now but have no wrinkles Grin

MermaidMummy06 · 13/11/2024 07:40

I used salicylic acid. It dried the oil up all day without drying my skin, which was as oily as a used frying pan. Good quality oily skin cleansers & moisturisers. Sunscreen.

It's a controversial choice because it can bleach your towels, but I used a very strong product. It was the only thing that worked apart from taking the pill (pcos driven oily skin).

LilacLilyBird · 13/11/2024 07:41

Are you using an acid like AHA or BHA they're good at controlling oil

SomethingAboutNothing · 13/11/2024 07:43

I have similar issues OP. I still get a bit shiny by the end of the day but my current routine seems to work better than anything else.

In an evening I use a simple oil free cleanser, then skin & me treatment with tretanoin in it, ten min later I put on any old night moisturiser.
In the morning I use a la Roche posay cleanser, followed by their day cream, both for oily skin. I use Estée Lauders double wear foundation, concealer and matte loose powder which all work really well together.

I wonder if your issue is using all different product brands? The Estée Lauder stuff is expensive but together it all works for me.

supercalifragilistic123 · 13/11/2024 07:46

Ooo I'm the same. I've been meaning to start a thread.

I've not even been moisturising recently because it's been so bad, I don't want to get spots. Luckily I don't have any at the moment, but I have to be really careful what I put on my skin because I get them really easily.

mrstrickland · 13/11/2024 07:53

Sorry I don't have any advice but you do have my sympathy as I was always the oiliest person I know. That has changed over the last few years now I am pushing 50, but as another person has said, I don't have any wrinkles and look a lot younger than my age so at least you have that to look forward to!!

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 13/11/2024 08:10

Same! I've found that washing my face less has helped to reduce the oilyness. I seem to have dry and oily skin (somehow!), so I guess washing it too much was making it more dry, which in turn was making it produce more oil.

(I now just wash my face in the evening, and not in the morning.)

bitcoy · 13/11/2024 09:34

Same here. I use L'Oréal fine flowers face wash and that helps, sometimes dont moisture. Have a dermatologist appointment in a few weeks (for something else) but I'm going to ask him about oily skin too. My mum had it so genetic in my case. It's a PITA

TheOGCCL · 13/11/2024 10:30

I’m pushing 50 and still have very oily skin. Also very prone to spots as the oil clogs my pores, it’s very grim. But because of all the effort I invest in my skin as a result I often get complimented.

Things I recommend:
Cerave oil cleanser (stripping skin creates more oil), but massaged in well especially if using foundation
Dermatica or other prescription skincare - niacinamide, tranexamic acid, tretinoin
Mineral based foundation like Bare Minerals - you are using your oils as part of the formulation then rather than adding more oil/cream via a traditional foundation
