London day trip - outfit suggestions please

I feel a bit silly asking this as I used to live in London!

I’m visiting just before Christmas to see Moulin Rouge, art exhibitions/museums and get dinner with friends. I’m travelling down by train on the day, so will need an outfit that covers all bases!

From a practical view: there will be light walking involved but no longer than 10 minutes as everything is nearby/covered by train.

From a non-practical view: I want an excuse to dress up and look nice, after a horrendous year.

I’m fairly short, and have lost weight recently after being overweight. I think I could fit into a size 8 but I’m still self conscious about my arms/thighs/tummy. I like the idea of a long dress, or a skirt/knee boots with a nice top and coat. Any ideas please send them my way!

Budget?

heldinadream · 11/11/2024 12:09

Can you get to a TK Maxx? I was just having a browse in there and saw a very chic looking mostly black with some white knitted dress with pleats in the skirt (which is where the white was). Nice feeling fabric too, 50% viscose. Looked smart, well made and comfortable all at the same time. I have no use for it but I was tempted. Was under £30 iirc but I did scrutinise a fair few labels.

Will you be changing your shoes for the theatre? If not then you need to start with your shoes or boots and work upwards as you'll be doing lots of walking.
I definitely like the idea of long boots and a knitted dress, or knitted skirt/jumper cord. You can always add jewellery for the evening. You'll need a bag big enough to take an umbrella. I also think you need to be checking the weather nearer the time to decide on a coat, I've got a lovely showerproof lightweight coat with a ruffle hem, or perhaps you could wear a bomber or quilted jacket?

Thanks everyone! No concrete budget in mind but I probably wouldn’t spend hundreds. (Unless I’m buying shoes I’ll rewear like the knee boots!) @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

@heldinadream I did think a black jumper dress or black knitted maxi skirt could work! With the skirt I could maybe wear a satin halter neck top to dress it up or something?

@Rina66 thanks so much! Ideally I’d wear the same shoes all day so trainers or heeled ankle boots, or knee boots. I like the idea of a teddy coat, but yes an umbrella is a must!

What do you think of these?

Coats (weather permitting!):
Black wool

Teddy

Also I saw this Boo Hoo co-ord which is out of stock - I can’t find anything similar online. But this sort of thing might be easy to wear I think? I’m short so not as much of my flesh would be on show, I could probably tuck the top into the skirt! Plus I’d have a coat to cover my arms.

The other screenshots are random things I liked on Zara, could any of these work?

I've just bought a Teddy coat like that! That would look lovely over a knitted skirt co- ord with boots- then you would wear all of it again as separates. The Teddy jacket will look great with jeans and the jumper from the co ord,

I'd probably go for something like this with a long wool coat.

For me the Cos coat is better but only because you may get too warm in the teddy coat.

I’m not overly on the Boo Hoo options, prefer the Zara ones or any of what @Keleshey linked.

This is in their sale and a 6 would be an 8 on you.

Wool skirt, knee high black boots, white or cream blouse (cotton or silk) cardigan if cold and a wool coat, scarf (plus gloves and hat if cold). It's my go to, classic and suits everything

SunblockSue · 11/11/2024 17:34

Goodness what a lot of effort. I live in London and I would definitely wear jeans and trainers to go to any/all of those things.

I personally couldn't imagine wearing that to go to the theatre or any of the places I eat out in when in London. Usually for eating it'll be anywhere near the theatres or the Royal Opera House or something like The Wolsely or Muriel's Kitchen.

As per the other London thread, I'd wear a " look at me" Klements type dress and flats for ROH, but for everything else, a day dress suitable for the weather, flat shoes or boots, and if it's cold enough a Max Mara coat ( but not my best one)

That's perfectly fine.
