Fake eyelashes for alopecia

My 14yo dd has lost/is losing eyelashes on one eye. It happened once before when she lost all her lashes on one eye (the other one) and it was a good 18 months/2 years before they grew back. She was only 8/9 then so while she was aware of it she wasn’t too bothered, but obviously a lot more aware now and is upset that it is happening again.

We have talked about why it might be happening again - last time it started at a time of potential big stress for her but she didn’t show any outward signs of it. We had been living overseas for a couple of years and it started almost the moment we told her we were moving back. I think they had started to grow back when covid happened then they went again, but looking at photos I can’t be sure of that.

Anyway, while we look into causes/ways to help I have said I would look into false eyelashes. The problem is she is very fair and doesn’t have much in the way of eyelashes in the first place, so the standard fake eyelash look would be extremely obvious and very weird on her. I have looked at a couple of beauty salons’ websites but they talk about extensions where they add fake lashes to your current lashes, which won’t work.

I am clueless about beauty stuff in general - any ideas where to go with this?

i’m sorry to hear about this. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head that fake eyelashes have to be stuck onto something.

I’m sure you are anyway, but I would be looking into the causes of this rather than the symptoms. Have you arranged some counselling? Or been to see your GP?

Normal fake eyelashes are supposed to be stuck to your real eyelashes not the skin so I'm not sure it'd work. If she has some level of lashes and you want to try you could use individual lashes rather than a strip. You should be able to find some more natural ones and trim to side if necessary.

Maybe there is a salon option where they can stick to your skin?

I have a friend with no hair at all, she lines her upper eyes but I've never known her get lashes.

Aww. That’s a great find!

These fake lashes are designed for use by cancer patients who have lost all their eyelashes due to chemotherapy, so are designed to be more natural, and to be stuck to skin.

Thanks so much! Looks like just the thing, though I wonder if they are available in a lighter colour, I’ll have a look around.

Yes, I’ll arrange to speak to a GP about it. She only came to me yesterday, I’ve been noticing it for the last week or so but was on a bit of a watch and wait to see if it was getting worse.

She has had some friendship issues in the last few months which came to a head a couple of weeks ago, so likely to be related to that, but she also has a lot of extra curricular stuff happening so I’ve talked to her about maybe cutting back on a couple of things, getting more sleep, maybe eating some vegetables occasionally… 🙄

Also, I’d have a word with school about it
