Is this okay for tea at the Ritz and ROH?

We visit London quite often, but mostly supper in Marylebone, picnic in the park, the theatre, lunch by the river, an exhibition or Ronnie Scott's (or work!) Basically, nice stuff but nothing fancy, just wear jeans or a day dress. This outing is unusual for me...

We are celebrating DD's 16th birthday in January with a trip to Mikimoto for pearl earrings, tea at the Ritz and Onegin at the Royal Opera House. We are overnighting at the Ritz (already looking forward to breakfast!)

DD has an amazing Sister Jane dress.

Would this dress do for me? How do people dress for ROH? Is it better in black or cream? (I'm a Deep Autumn apparently) And what shoes might work? I was hoping I might get away with loafers as I hate heels.

Any ideas appreciated!

This is my favourite thread of all time. Well done, threehexes.

Oh fgs just give over. This is the weirdest, snobbiest, awful thread. All that 'I know old money rubbish', it's painful.

But then op's opening post wasn't any better; dropping brand names left right and centre

ADHDGURL · 10/11/2024 17:25

Ahh it's gorgeous.. I'd love to wear that and go those places, definitely not out of place and very cute!

bluegreygreen · 10/11/2024 17:26

@WindsurfingDreams It's in Style and Beauty - if you can't use brand names there ...

Yes but it was the opener dripping with absolutely superfluous "context" that I was referring to.

Not the clothing brands

Arran2024 · 10/11/2024 17:40

I used to go to the ballet at the ROH all the time. Tickets were not as expensive as people think- def cheaper than a west end show. Myvfriend and I saw everything. Dress was smart but as we always went mid week it was mostly people going straight after work. I never felt out of place. I went to a Scottish comprehensive AND they let me in!! I went to a opera once - corporate hospitality, so we ate there and had a box. I dressed up for that, but you don't especially have to. Hope you have a lovely time. ROH has a gorgeous bar.

What's wrong with a bit of context

bluegreygreen · 10/11/2024 17:58

Agree - seemed like context of a celebratory day out, not something to be unpleasant about

There was nothing wrong in giving the context. There are some deeply unpleasant posts on this thread.

All of you that regular go to ROH and Ritz, what jobs/income do you have?

RosesAndHellebores · 10/11/2024 18:45

@trueolympian those that allow us to spend that sort of money.

LapinR0se · 10/11/2024 18:54

I joined mumsnet over a decade ago and then it was absolutely full of posts like this - a bit of excitement, glamour and fun. Especially in style & beauty.
i have no idea why people are so DREARY now. It is a glorious thing to go to a show and spend the night and the Ritz. Why on earth would anyone say otherwise?
and yes it totally merits new dresses for everyone!
i love the OPs dress and I may actually buy the daughter’s one for myself!

HauntedBungalow · 10/11/2024 18:56

I'm Elon Musk and I go to the Ritz all the time.

AnnaMagnani · 10/11/2024 19:00

@TrueOlympian if opera is your main hobby then you prioritise it.

Going to the cheap seats at ROH costs a lot less than more popular activities such as a West End musical, premiership football, going to a gig/festival etc.

My colleagues have all prioritised buying Oasis tickets. Great if that's your thing but it isn't mine and I can probably go to 4 operas for one Oasis ticket.

TrueOlympian · 10/11/2024 19:07

I agree, the ROH isn’t a good example. I’ve seen almost all shows at West End.

I was genuinely curious what type of people stay at the Ritz. I can’t justify the £1,000 per night. I would easily spend this amount on a city break in Europe, so I was just wondering if people can afford to do both. I’m not judging anyone and thank you for your responses.

Never been to the Ritz but usually go to the ROH a few times a year. I have a fairly average job would be Band 7 NHS but work for a charity. Not always shows on the main stage. I've taken my children to a few shows at the Linbury theatre at the ROH. I never buy the expensive tickets.

Can’t really comment as went to Greggs for my daughters 16th.

Well buzz off then back to Greggs. Are you trying to shame OP?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 10/11/2024 19:27

Partner in a regional private client law firm. I have stayed at The Ritz and it was lovely. It's a treat. Last time was a birthday present for my husband. I'd been before but he hadn't. He was sceptical about the price but was won over by how nice it was. He loved it.

If I'm in London for ROH or theatre usually stay at the Radisson Blu in Mercer Street.

For opera tickets I'd expect to pay around £70-£150 depending on which company.

During the Taylor Swift tours there were long running threads about what to wear- what "Era" or even more than 1 "Era"

I don't know anything about Taylor Swift, beyond I know she exists. I'm guessing tickets for the Eras tours were in that price bracket, yet no one seemed to criticise that or the cost of buying one- off Eras costumes.

RosesAndHellebores · 10/11/2024 19:36

We could stay at the Ritz but wouldn't dream of it. We could stay at the Oxford & Cambridge Club for a third of the price but that would be for an exceptional occasion.

We tend to stroll down to a quieter bit of the Embankment and call an Uber. £60 to £80 usually gets us home in 40/45 minutes.

I would encourage everyone to treat themselves to a fruit shoot and sausage roll from Greggs. I am quite interested in their share price.

I love the cream Me+Em dress. Deffo get it in the cream, it’s much more Wow than the black.

I also love your DDs dress. You’ll both turn heads. Have a wonderful time.

Is it quite short or is the model quite tall?
Can never tell on photos.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 10/11/2024 19:43

I don't live in London- I don't live in England. I have sometimes if I'm just down for one performance on a week day got the sleeper back.

One of my best holidays ever was staying the Sacher and seeing 3 operas at the Vienna State Opera.

I don't know if this is sarcasm but Gregg's brie and tomato and ploughman's sandwiches are about half the price of Pret sandwiches. I often buy them for lunch.
