Is this okay for tea at the Ritz and ROH?

DieDreiHexen · 08/11/2024 21:13

We visit London quite often, but mostly supper in Marylebone, picnic in the park, the theatre, lunch by the river, an exhibition or Ronnie Scott's (or work!) Basically, nice stuff but nothing fancy, just wear jeans or a day dress. This outing is unusual for me...

We are celebrating DD's 16th birthday in January with a trip to Mikimoto for pearl earrings, tea at the Ritz and Onegin at the Royal Opera House. We are overnighting at the Ritz (already looking forward to breakfast!)

DD has an amazing Sister Jane dress.

Would this dress do for me? How do people dress for ROH? Is it better in black or cream? (I'm a Deep Autumn apparently) And what shoes might work? I was hoping I might get away with loafers as I hate heels.

Any ideas appreciated!

The green dress is amazing. The cream dress doesn't give me evening at the opera vibes at all.

PurBal · 10/11/2024 07:03

I'd go for lunch at Ritz. This is what we did. It's much better value for money.

Can’t really comment as went to Greggs for my daughters 16th.

Pmsl! 🤣

Those boots though? 🤣 please, don't wear a pair of those with it! Ffs! lol. Nice dress.

Why are you laughing? Do you want the OP to feel humiliated and embarrassed. There is just no need for it.

That's so incredibly rude. There are ways of saying things.

Jfdomega · 10/11/2024 07:50

You do realise I was talking about the model wearing the boots with the dress in the link she gave?

I was talking about the boots the model was wearing in the link she provided. They looked ridiculous!

WimpoleHat · 10/11/2024 08:10

what is absurd is the statement that people routinely dress down.

People obviously don’t “routinely dress down”, but what I would say is that people who go routinely don’t make an effort to dress up. As a result, you get a range of looks/levels of effort, from jeans to evening dresses. And nobody bats an eyelid.

WindsurfingDreams · 10/11/2024 08:47

@Shakatak perhaps not a windup but someone who is cringingly awkward and unaware.

The whole introduction was bizarre, a sort of attempt by op to set out her credentials. So unnecessary.

Why, op wasn't planning to wear boots anyway

Came here to say the same! This would've been my dream 16th birthday (and with my 28th round the corner it's still not looking too bad 😉)

Me too, you suddenly have quite a few more daughters OP…
Love, love love Onegin. And pearls. And teas.

Parties round yours must be a barrel of laughs, @Grammarnut.

We have stunning parties with friends and family, fancy dress sometimes (we do murder mysteries, too), lots of good food (mostly home-cooked), wine and beer flowing freely, fireworks, bonfires, music in most rooms, outdoor lights, games. Great fun. Just because we believe people should be able to live decent lives does not mean we are kill-joys. If I want to have tea at the Ritz I can - but I can also think of things I would enjoy more. I wouldn't write a post on it and what to wear on MN, though.

Grammarnut · 10/11/2024 09:16

excelledyourself · 09/11/2024 13:59

@Grammarnut

Why are you answering a question that wasn't even directed at you? How can you possibly know why that poster made that comment?

I don't. But I can see where the original poster was coming from when she said she had no advice etc. She was pointing out that boasting of excessive consumption is vulgar. I thought we could comment on any comment, not just directed at us! Isn't that the point?

Lwrenn · 10/11/2024 09:27

@DieDreiHexen is your DD excited?

I'm very invested in this thread. Her dress is beautiful!

Meanwhile33 · 10/11/2024 09:35

I think the cream dress is beautiful and perfect for tea, but you might be happier with something comfier for the ROH, with a loose skirt that covers your knees, so it feels nicer when you sit down & you don’t get chilly. But really the only thing that matters about your clothes is if they make you happy and feel good. I hope you have a lovely time.

It sounds like an amazing birthday treat, your daughter is really lucky to have a mum who wants to do all this with her even though you have busy lives. You’ve inspired me to make more of an effort than usual for my DS when the time comes!

Grammarnut · 10/11/2024 09:49

LittleBearPad · 09/11/2024 18:50

Presumably you only wear hairshirts. Do you really have time to post on style & beauty?

Don't be daft. Why should views on positive and negative freedom have anything to do with wearing hair shirts? I think OP is really wanting to talk abut her really special day with DD which sticks in some people's throats as so unself-aware, that's all. I went to Venice with DD - it was a birthday present from DD, as it happens - and I did wonder what to take (weather, where we're going, lots of walking - the Doge's Palace did us for 1200 steps!) but I didn't post on MN about it (till now 😄).

Jfdomega · 10/11/2024 09:51

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be disrespectful. I was making fun of the models boots she was wearing with the dress in the link. It wasn’t aimed at you. I’m sorry if this offended you. I wasn’t making fun of you.

But this is Style and Beauty, where people ask questions about, er, style & beauty...

I picked it up in my feed. Sorry, I will withdraw. Still wouldn't wear that suit but it will probably look ok on OP if that's her style. And I wasn't the only commenter on this, I picked up on someone who said they could not comment on this as they had taken DD to burger king for 16 birthday.

OP has posted a completely normal question which has sparked a stream of competitive responses. Bizarre!

LaRevolution · 10/11/2024 10:05

This thread is crackers 😁

OP, hope you and your family have a lovely time. FWIW I think both outfits are completely appropriate based on context provided, even though I would likely wear something different.

A pp had it right when they said that MN bingo has been well and truly played on this thread though - we've got all the classics! There's an episode of The Good Wife where an annoying judge makes everyone in her court preface everything with "in my opinion..." and sometimes I try to remember that when reading 11-page threads in S&B (referencing pearl earrings, fingering, Greggs, 90s mega-clubs, and Russian literature) about what is essentially, one family's minibreak 😆

Mountainstories · 10/11/2024 10:11

Dress is lovely. Just an FYI, afternoon tea at the Ritz is hideous. They cram you in like sardines and there are so many people. Its a meat market, and a very overpriced one at that. Can you do a nice meal/afternoon tea somewhere else?

The afternoon tea or the brunch at the Rosewood Hotel in Holborn is much nicer, and an 11 minute walk from ROH.
