Christmas in Toronto Ontario?

Riverswims · 08/11/2024 10:00

we'll be in Toronto for the Christmas break and I need to know what to wear day to day, it should be cold and hopefully snowy, we'll be doing tourist things out all day, indoors ie museums and outdoors ie zoo/nature reserve, ice skating, I've heard about the Uniqlo jackets which fold very small but are they water resistant for snow? what about shoes? some of us (me, teen DS& DD, preteen DDs) have water resistant boots can get more if needed but not wanting to waste money. I know paths will be cleared but I'm sure it'd get miserable in wet trainers? been warned about windchill, I really don't know coz I don't go away much, in UK I'd just wear winter running gear but appreciate that's maybe not the best. any advice appreciated please. thanks

I have a pair of Sorel Caribou boots for very cold weather and snow. They are so cosy and have really good grip.

Make sure you have good base layers and gloves & hats too. We were in Canada in Feb a few years ago and with windchill it was about minus 35. But with good base layers , a good coat and hat & gloves you feel quite snug.

My son has lived in Downtown Toronto for over 12 years. Yes the windchill can be bitter, as it channels around the high buildings funnelling it. Make sure you have a wool scarf to protect your lower face, try and avoid synthetic as it doesn’t breathe. And make sure you have a warm hat, I had to buy an alpaca one when I was there as my UK hat didn’t make a jot of difference! Down coat, try and have longer coats to keep you snug. A lot of downtown is underground so you can stay protected and the snow tends to be dry not like slushy uk snow. Don’t go mad on the base layers as you might not be able to strip these off when you go to the Museum and art galleries! You will bake! And the pavements are dry really,. Oh good gloves, I used to use liners to up the warmth. Jeans are chilly, go for warmer trousers if you can. Honestly you can buy out there what you need in case you get caught out.

Probably of no help whatsoever, but the climate at that time of year is why my friend who lives there goes south for two months!

Layers!! Everywhere inside is heated so you are constantly taking things off/on, but agree you can buy out there - I got done stuff from a huge thrift shop, was amazing!!

I love cold weather that's why we're going- along with family ties- but we'll see how much I love it when we're there lol

I just have memories of the road being clear but all the snow being piled up at the intersections making crossing as a pedestrian was an absolute nightmare unless you wanted to wade through 3 foot mound of compacted ice… made much worst on mild days as it melts and floods. Means you do end up ankle if not knee deep and will need several changes of shoe throughout the day. And yes to the comment about the tall buildings funnelling the arctic wind. Brrrrrrr. Great city tho 👍
