Best way to sell designer items?

Looking for advice on the best way to securely sell a couple high end designer items I've got sitting around, while still maximising the money I get from the sale price

I'm an avid Vinted seller but have heard of many horror stories from sellers being scammed by dishonest buyers with high end items. Because of this I am not willing to sell high end things on Vinted. I have also heard similar recently about eBay with buyers claiming the item was never delivered (despite having reputable tracking) or claiming the item was fake or the wrong item was sent.

I've looked into the more reputable re-sale sites, but they take 50% of the sale price. One of the items I've got is priced in the £1000 range, so I'd rather not have to hand over half and only receive £500.

Has anyone had experience selling on eBay with the buyer collecting in person and the payment received in advance or at the time of sale?

Or any recommendations for reputable resale sites that take a lower commission than 50%?

Have you seen if you have anywhere you can take them in person? A few villages away we have a pre loved high end shop that offer this service.

I have yes, but they also take 50%. I completely understand re-sale companies need to make a profit as well (especially those with bricks and mortar locations), pay their taxes, etc.

But I'd rather not have to give up £500 from a £1k sale if there's a secure way I can sell it myself.

One of the items I've got is also more of a unique and limited piece that I feel would do better with a company that has a larger online presence to make it known (either a company's social media or eBay where people can search for it).

If it's a bag or jewellery of special interest it might be worth contacting Resee. Their standard comission is 40% but it's lower on bags and jewellery. Vestiaire Collective commission is pretty low these days. Hardly Ever Worn It is also not that high if you're not using the concierge service.

For bags (and some accessories) Naughtipidgins Nest is also worth looking at.

Vestiere? Their commission is higher than Vinted but they offer physical authentication (at additional cost to the buyer) so it’s likely more trusted than Vinted and eBay. I don’t think it’s such a high-traffic site so you might have to wait a while. And it’s easy to overestimate how much second hand goods sell for. It’s slightly heartbreaking IME!

100% this.. I used to sell high end items on EBay too. Unfortunately, it's like a lottery. High risk for sellers.

Definitely try HEWI.com

loropianalover · 06/11/2024 00:23

I’ve used Vestiaire a few times, no issues getting my money but customer service is crap - they call you ‘darling’ and ‘my love’ 🤣

I agree with you re. the consignment shops, they’re just not worth it with the high % they take. As a buyer their stuff is always over priced too.

would also love to know what you’ve got for sale? ☺️

I would never have someone collect an eBay item unless they are paying cash on collection. Otherwise, if they pay online they might claim a refund saying that they never received the item.

I've sold on eBay for years and have rarely had problems. You get the odd chancer who will try to claim that the item wasn't received (had this with a Tiffany necklace once), but it's not a problem as long as you have tracking and proof of delivery, eBay have always closed the cases in my favour.

Not sure bout Vinted as haven't used that

I sell on ebay all the time (not clothing) abd have won disputes where I can prove the item was delivered, by updating tracking. So if you use a tracked service, yodel or evri track for no extra charge, and can prove delivery you won't lose.

I think they always used to side with the buyer but take a more measured approach now.
