Proper talc that smells lovely

Well aware of the health concerns but it's for a 80 yo lady with dementia. She really wants some proper talc with a puff if possible. Cornstarch "talc" has been tried and rejected. Please help!

Try Woods of Windsor talcs on Amazon. They look very traditional with nice powder puffs.

LoremIpsumCici · 03/11/2024 22:50

No, don’t give her body powder with talc and do not tell her it is talc free.
She may be 80, but no one should be breathing in arsenic.

Here is a recipe for body powder using kaolin (white clay) that is safe and will have the same feel as talc.

I'm not comfortable lying to her - I'd rather get nothing if I can't get proper talc. But thank you!

Also, arsenic isn't the issue. It's that talc may contain asbestos which can obviously cause issues.

She has also specifically asked for fragrances talc (I think because she remembers it from being younger!)

LoremIpsumCici · 03/11/2024 23:16

Sorry, I meant asbestos but had a memory lapse.

However, the talc also can cause pulmonary talcosis in as few as 2yrs of using it. I know you’re not comfortable lying to her, but she has dementia and as her carer you are responsible for ensuring she is safe. If she had all her faculties, do you really think she would risk using real talc?

Well, she's been using it for all of her life.

I'm not her carer and she has asked for talc.

I'm loving the description of old fashioned talc like its crack cocaine or something!

QuestionableMouse · 04/11/2024 00:43

I'm more baffled by the assumption I'm a carer!

My mum always used Estée Lauder Youth Dew talc (for decades and it never caused her any health issues as far as we know!) and loved it. It smelt gorgeous. It comes in a box with a proper puff but is quite pricey,so would perhaps be a lovely gift? I think Estée Lauder do talc in some of their other perfume scents too.
Bless you for wanting to do something nice for her - I know with dementia that there are increasingly few joys left to be had for the sufferer and if a scented talc will bring her joy, that is a lovely thing to do;life’s small joys must be enjoyed whilstsoever they can be where dementia is concerned because each one is eventually robbed from them.😔

buffyspikefaith · 04/11/2024 01:21

Yardley? You can buy tubs with a puff to put it in

I was going to suggest Yardley too.
Some real talc doesn't contain arsenic as they mine their talc far from asbestos deposits.

WrinklesShminkles · 04/11/2024 08:30

M&S still sell scented talc - I can't link because of the stupid app. You can find it online rather than in stores. I hope the talc hysteria passes soon.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 04/11/2024 08:46

It’s not in a tb with a puff, but Imperial Leather talc is still about and smells like the 60s.

yipyipyop · 04/11/2024 08:53

There's no concrete link to talc and cancer. Ffs op wants to do something nice for her dm who is in her 80s with dementia. People need to unclench.

Wallawallakoala · 04/11/2024 01:19

This is on my Amazon wish list at the moment!

I use this one - although it is a lot cheaper to buy as I am in Italy. It is very nice, "clean" smell.

EvelynBeatrice · 04/11/2024 09:41

Stop with the duty of care stuff. The lady is 80 and has dementia. If a little luxury like talc will bring her pleasure then it’s a failure of care in my view not to provide it. Away with the preserve life at all costs nonsense. It’s not a good thing to live to 100 with no quality of life.

My friend’s grandmother ingested practically nothing but doughnuts and sherry in her last two years of life - she was happy and good for her.

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/11/2024 09:48

FFS, if the Woman's been using real talc all her life and has made it to 80 then I think the time to be worried about the risks of it is long past @LoremIpsumCici.

If I make it to 80 I plan on taking up smoking again, and having a glass or 3 of good wine with lunch every day.

KindQuail · 04/11/2024 10:20

Lush do some lovely 'dusting powder' and you could buy a puff to sprinkle it on.

She's not my mum either 😆

She's the lady I used to work for as a housekeeper - she has unfortunately had to go into a care home due to the dementia and she's missing a lot of little things.

Thank you all for the ideas, looking into them! 😁😁

yipyipyop · 04/11/2024 10:44

@QuestionableMouse ha sorry I realised she wasn't your dm after I posted. Really thoughtful of you to find her something that will give her a bit of enjoyment. Those moments must be few for her!

Deathraystare · 04/11/2024 13:18

Or Yardley They have all sorts of scent including Lily of the valley, Jasmine (my favourite) Violet, Lavender etc etc

QuestionableMouse · 04/11/2024 13:58

Thank you!

She's gone from living in a gorgeous big house to a small room in a care home so I'm just trying to give her a bit of her old life back!
