Help me find a 100% wool jumper for a 10yr old girl

Hi there,

I've been looking for a completely wool jumper for DD and I can't find ANYTHING. It all seems to be acrylic or polyester.

She's grown out of some of the more eco friendly kids brands, which tend to only go up to 7-8 years old. Regardless, they mostly stock 100% cotton jumpers - possibly wool is too itchy for young kids.

There must be SOMEWHERE I can buy a wool jumper for her. I've been wearing 100% lambswool jumpers myself lately from Community Clothing or Cos and they so much warmer than anything else I own.

I should add that I'm not at all crafty or I'd knit one! Wise mavens of S&B, I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Have you tried asking on local fb groups if anyone local knits to order?

WorriedRelative · 02/11/2024 07:36

What about merino? Some of the outdoor brands might have something, icebreaker or smartwool perhaps?

GinJarRogers · 02/11/2024 07:37

I’ve been looking for the same thing for the last couple of years (DD is 12) and have not found anything.
Following with interest!

WhiteCatmas · 02/11/2024 07:44

Just buy a small or extra small man/woman jumper for from M&S or Uniqlo? Or a second hand one from Ebay?

WhiteCatmas · 02/11/2024 07:44

When I say second hand, I mean a second hand small adult jumper from Ebay.

Beepbeepoutoftheway · 02/11/2024 07:45

Try a local wool shop. They may have contacts of somebody who can knit you one up

ExquisiteIyDesigned · 02/11/2024 07:49

I’d look secondhand too in case she doesn’t like it, I never did grow out of finding wool too warm and scratchy and much prefer cotton/acrylic.

MavisTheMonkey · 02/11/2024 07:58

100% lambs wool; L or XL should fit

HamSandwichKiller · 02/11/2024 08:05

Are you sure she can wear wool? I'm entirely grown and can't deal with the scratchy. I second buying Uniqlo in XS, the sizing won't be far off and the trend is for a baggy look anyway.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/11/2024 08:08

No moth problem, then? I've given up on 100% wool because every garment I had was nibbled. I find it more comfortable to wear cotton and linen next to the skin, anyway, layering up as necessary for warmth.

mimosa1 · 02/11/2024 08:23

Thanks @MavisTheMonkey those suggestions are great.

So far, she doesn't seem to have any issues wearing wool. It would be over a long sleeve t-shirt anyway.

M&S seems to be riven with acrylic at the moment, such a shame, but Uniqlo merino in xs is a good shout. I've always found their sizing very small (for me) so off to check out the XS there too.

Thank you.

House of Bruar have a good choice. John Lewis have a few 80% lambswool. Cambridge baby. Maybe look for something Irish or on Etsy for alpaca knitwear

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/11/2024 08:35

John Lewis have a few.
I havn't checked all these, but the heritage fair isle and a couple of the Reiss jumpers are wool. Some have 20% polyester for durability. I only wear natural fibres, but I find that jumpers can wear through quickly at the elbows etc without but if polyester.

Cambridge Baby in fact a lot of here, but many stop at age 8-10.

Their kids range goes up to 10-11 and their adults start at a size 4.

I gave my daughter one of mine that I accidentally shrunk in the wash

ladygindiva · 02/11/2024 08:45

Got bought a lovely one for my DD from joules a couple years ago x

crumpet · 02/11/2024 09:27

Does Boden for kids have any?

mimosa1 · 02/11/2024 09:52

Thanks Crumpet, Boden all have some polyamide or acrylic in. Maybe for durability as a PP mentioned. Off to check out some of the other options. Thanks all!

When I did that it might have fitted a newborn but the wool was so thick and felted there would have been a real risk of overheating. So frustrating when this happens! Another reason we don't have any woollen garments here now.
