Properly actually moisturising night cream

Hello all

Ever since having DC my face skin has been dry and chalky and uncomfortable like a sad hessian sack.

I've tried lots of different night creams but they all seem not to touch the sides. I want to feel slathered and mucous-y, but they just feel like an "ineffective layer" on top.

Have tried hyaluronic acid serum plus cheaper (Nivea classic) moisturiser, Dr Jart ceramidin, Inkey List Peptides. No avail.

Short of lathering myself in Vaseline, any ideas?

I recommend LRP cicaplast baume. You can get a 40ml size to try it out.

I love the Clinique moisture surge night mask. It feels lovely and rich without being heavy or greasy. My skin always feels amazing in the morning.
I also use their facewash & moisture surge moisturiser.

Another vote for Cerave as well

cakecakecake98 · 28/10/2024 23:28

I have dry skin like sandpaper and Eucerin is the only thing that sorts me out.
I’ve tried everything and Eucerin is all that works - I have their tube of cream for my face, and bottle of lotion for my body

Thanks so much all! Sounds like votes are in for Cerave and the M&S night cream, and also for a gentle cleanser which is a good shout. Will report back.

I also like the idea of an additional night oil so if there are any recs for those - ones not mad spenny if poss - much appreciated

Another Star for the M&S Sleep Cream - there's also a Night Oil in the range that I sometimes layer with it. If you're near an M&S Outlet, look out for the gift sets that pop up now and again, or in the main sale after xmas; I'm still working through my discounted stockpile from last year.

TheChosenTwo · 29/10/2024 07:11

Cleansing balm, ANR and a layer of Charlotte tilbury as magic night cream - you won’t wake up feeling dry that’s for sure!!
I don’t use the CT every night, it’s way too heavy and I’d end up with loads of spots but once or twice a week it’s fine for me. I know loads of people hate it because it’s quite thick and greasy but I like it for those reasons. And I put it on hours before I go to bed, give myself a little pamper evening and apply everything about 8pm so gives hours to settle before I get into bed.

usernother · 29/10/2024 08:26

@JMSA I have the day version. Unless the night one is very very different, it won't touch the sides with extremely dry skin.

I thought that when I first tried it. I was using the same amount of my usual v expensive Clarins night cream. I started using a bit more and it's fine now. It'll still work out much cheaper than the Clarins cream that I can no longer afford.

I have dry skin which gets very dehydrated over winter and as soon as the central heating goes on. This year I've been discovering the concept of layering and also kbeauty/jbeauty - both which are very big on moisture layers.

I won't bore you with my routine because a lot depends on figuring out stuff that suits your skin type which might not be the same type of 'dry' as mine. However one thing I have been finding useful is to do my nightly routine earlier in the evening. Let it soak in then half an hour before bed adding a sleep mask (basically a thick cream). I'm using Laneige Cica Mask but there are many others.

If you want to learn more about asian beauty brands/ western ones that have pinched the concept, moisture layering etc. this youtube channel has been really helpful to me as she goes into a lot of detail about ingredients, purpose and effectiveness especially for dry skin.

I like Weleda skin food (cleanser and light moisturiser), then sometimes use a few drops of a face oil at night time

SavageGarden23 · 29/10/2024 11:06

Whatever cream you decide to use, make sure to apply it while your face is still moist after cleansing,or use a spray toner. Any hyaluronic acid containing moisturiser will work to hold that moisture. Otherwise if you are putting it on dry skin, the HA will absorb moisture from your skin so you will wake up drier.

Havalona · 29/10/2024 11:11

Nivea blue. Simple and effective for generations.

SoapCollector · 29/10/2024 11:37

E45 cream or any heavy duty emollient?

GettingStuffed · 29/10/2024 11:42

I did a quick search for you and boots dermacare come up as it's only £4 I'd give it ago. It doesn't have to be marketed as a night cream to use overnight

The massive cerave pot as pp have said. I let it sink in then do a second coat.

Maybe a face oil too? I recently read you're supposed to use them after your moisturiser but I always use before.

I use face oils or serums before night time moisturisers.

lechatnoir · 29/10/2024 14:12

I like The Ordinary Argan Oil (also use it on my hair if the ends look dry) but reading the rave reviews on here & M&S own website, I'm going to try a pot of the Formula night cream to slather on afterwards as I too like to feel drenched at bedtime! Drinking more water also makes a big difference to my skin especially as I get older.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/10/2024 15:41

You really can put Vaseline after your moisturiser. Google slugging.

GroovyChick87 · 30/10/2024 15:44

Aldi Caviar is very thick and moisturising. I think it's a dupe of a more expensive cream. It didn't work for me as it brought me out in spots on my chin but it was very nourishing.

dudsville · 30/10/2024 15:57

Elizabeth arden night time miracle and Egyptian Magic are both wonderfully fancy vaseline type balm moisturisers. I do a balm cleanser, glycolic acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, then one of these two balm moisturisers.

Lavenderandbrown · 31/10/2024 00:29

SILK PILLOW. It’s a game changer

cerave skin cleanser only at night. Don’t use anything with “foam” in the label. Foam = alcohol and it will be drying

moisturize right after shower /face washing. Don’t allow skin to feel dry

when I want to really super moisturize I use Nivea in the blue tin but ONLY the one made
in Germany not Mexico. They are not the same. The German manufactured one is easier to blend in. The Mexican one is waxier and sits in the skin. Read Labels. I have bought it at Tjmaxx daughter brought some home from S Korea and German online sales. The tin lasts along time so you aren’t sourcing frequently.

TheFormidableMrsC · 31/10/2024 01:10

Weleda Skin Food. I prefer the light version. Otherwise blue pot Nivea.

Inezz · 31/10/2024 02:09

Another vote for Weleda skinfood.

Or The Ordinary natural moisturising factors + phytoceramides

Both v thick and moisturising.
