Help! Desperate for Warm, Comfortable WFH Bottoms

Hi Mumsnet fashion gurus,

I need your help with some much-needed winter wardrobe advice. I have a few chronic health conditions that make me incredibly sensitive to the cold. Once I'm cold, it's nearly impossible to warm up, and layering clothes often makes me feel even colder (I know, it sounds crazy!).

Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Style: Casual-smart, like cargo trousers or jeans, but open to other suggestions.
  • Fit: Size 10, long legs, petite frame (34" hips, 28" waist).
  • Comfort: Super soft, stretchy, warm, natural fibers
  • Function: WFH-friendly, especially for video calls and long periods of sitting/standing, nipping out to the shops, in-person meetings, etc.
  • Ease of wear: Pull-on style, no buttons or zips, no ankle cuffs.
  • Colour: Neutral colours to complement blue and grey tops, but honestly, colour is my last concern!

I've tried everything from thermal leggings to multiple layers (tights + thermals + trousers), but nothing keeps me warm.

Every winter, I struggle and ending up lose weight.

I'm hoping to find something comfortable, warm, and professional enough for video calls.

Any suggestions would be a lifesaver!

Thank you

A bit of a diversion but for me there is nothing like heated throws. I just love them and find that wrapping one round me just below the Zoom camera means that I can delay turning on the heating for ages

M&S fleece lined footless tights with a Seasalt wool maxi skirt and thermal socks.

Warmer than tights which squeeze toes.

isodontknow · 31/10/2024 20:57

Have you looked at decathlon? They do fleece lined hiking leggings they say are suitable for -14 degrees. Pair of those under a skirt?

Have you had your thyroid checked? Low body temperature is one of the main indicators for an underactive thyroid.

I see others have recommended fleece lined trousers. These ones are relatively smart as well as very warm: acaioutdoorwear.com/products/thermal-skinny-outdoor-trousers-graphite

Lots of good suggestions so far. Here's a few other ideas:

Do you regularly eat hot food? Or even just non heated snacks? This can make a difference.

Layers need air trapped between them - just a thought in case you're wearing lots of clothes but they're not warming your body.

Wall sitting / squat for up to 2 mins (if poss) is a good way to get circulation going.

Breathing exercises can also relax & warm up the body - 5 min YouTube vid in your breaks.

Someone has already mentioned slips with jumper dresses + thermal tights / leggings which works well with good socks & slippers. Plus neck buff / scarf.

Best of luck, OP! Let us know how you get on if you get good gadgets.

I wondered about this too

I bought these last year, not cheap but so warm and soft. I can wear them out and they can look really smart. I’ve washed mine loads and wear them everyday in the winter. If you can get them with a joining discount code all the better!

i have found a gel seat pad covered with a sheepskin and with a heated pad to be a winning combo, plus wool socks. I also oddly found fewer but better layers helped as it lets air circulate. Eg merino wool tights, wool or leather skirt, merino vest, cashmere jumper, Wool cardigan or sometimes sheepskin gilet, hat.

if you’re looking for trousers specifially I just got an elasticated wool pair from cos that are basically smart jogging bottoms. Super warm, super cosy, could easily have merino tights or long thermals under too

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/11/2024 06:19

Are you possibly wearing too many clothes? All those thermal layers either work by trapping air next on your skin, which will be difficult if your layers are compressed by other layers, or work by wicking sweat away from your body, which is no goo if you're not sweating.(

I'd recommend sheepskins boots (actual sheepskin, not synthetic), wool rich socks (actual wool), merino wool barkers top and bottom, wool jumper down bodywarmer.
and a wool hat.

I have the Dunelm belt mentioned above, someone got it for my birthday, its great for my lower back pain but also tummy cramps and just generally keeping me warm! It also keeps the heat longer than wheat bag thingies
