Charity Shop Bargain

I just had to share my charity shop bargain with you all. I've recently got into charity shops and I've bought quite a few nice things for me and my son but nothing I would class as a massive bargain, however today as I walked in I saw the most gorgeous vibrant pink winter coat in my size. It was only £12 and the label showed today's date so it had just gone out, so after trying it on and it fitting perfectly I bought it. The brand wasn't one I'd heard of before 'Damsel in a Dress' so I gave it a Google after I'd left and the coat is no longer available but retailed at £299!!!! It is in perfect condition - this has honestly made my week. I'd love to hear if any of you have had a better bargain x

Ooh that is gorgeous ❤️❤️❤️

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/10/2024 20:35

I never find any amazing bargains (in fairness I am mostly looking at the books) but I LOVE reading about other people's finds.

Cudz · 27/10/2024 20:37

Thanks @toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 I really love it. Ive just been wearing it around the house and my ds has told me I need to "get a life as it's only a coat". Seriously is this child even related to me???? 😂

They weren't designer or anything but I bought a pair of smart high heeled Mary Jane style shoes in a charity shop for 99p, about 20 years ago. I have just retired them but they were my go to shoes for smart occasions and funerals. It made me smile that I wore them for my dad and MIL funerals, both of whom were big charity shop fans!

Craftycorvid · 27/10/2024 20:39

Woo! Well done! I do love a chazzer bargain - not had one in a while though.

LunaTheCat · 27/10/2024 20:41

Ohh beautiful coat!
I love a bright coat in winter…so cheerful.
I have a 1950’s red velvet coat I bought 20 plus years ago.. it cost more to re do lining that coat but it’s beautiful.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 27/10/2024 20:45

It's such a statement coat though and will elevate any outfit. I have a real soft spot for bright pink or animal
Print coats. I don't have £300 to spend on a coat but if I did I would have bought that at full price no question.

I love that £12 has brought you so much happiness!!

NeedWineNow · 27/10/2024 20:48

Oh I love a charity shop!

Your coat is fab OP, what a great find! My latest bargain is an Orla Kiely midi crossbody bag in a brown multi print. In great condition for £5.50. The same style, but different print, is on their website for £165.

Cudz · 27/10/2024 20:50

@NeedWineNow oh wow what a great find for you! My go to's in charity shops are coats and bags so I'm very jealous of your bargain!

Items are dated 2 weeks in advance from when they come in btw but sounds nice 🙂

Maybe not in every charity shop though?

Yuja · 27/10/2024 20:52

Got a lovely houndstooth Jigsaw blazer for a tenner not long ago - love these charity shop bargains threads though! Op that coat is gorgeous I'm super jealous 👏👏

fernsandlilies · 27/10/2024 20:53

Gorgeous coat.

My recent bargain makes me so happy - it's an original 1950s tweed jacket, with a nipped in waist, in a lovely blue/brown heather tweed. I found a photo online of an advertisement for the jacket and skirt from 1959. It's immaculate, except one of the buttons is missing.

I paid £4.99.

Interestingly, I went vintage/charity shopping with DD in Angel Islington area of London yesterday, and every charity shop was rammed with American (Canadian?) tourists. It's obviously a thing to do.

Prices were much higher than out of London, but the clothes were mostly high quality and top-end High St brands - no faded Primark or Tu.

Crucible · 27/10/2024 20:54

I have a blue heavy cotton jacket, very warmly lined, from a charity shop (£30). I changed the buttons which were plain blue, to some beautiful bird print buttons I bought on Etsy. (The maker is called Stockwell Ceramics and her buttons are beautiful). I love them and I get asked about them as it's a very buttonny coat (which I also love, lots of buttons). The lady in the gift shop at Glastonbury Abbey was the last person to ask me about them and we had a great natter about changing an item this way.
Great coat OP , the colour is gorgeous.

Cudz · 27/10/2024 20:55

@fernsandlilies that sounds fabulous!!!

Yes I hate wading through all of the Primark clothes In charity shops - often they're very well worn and priced about the same as what you'd buy brand new!

WhatNext24 · 27/10/2024 20:55

Lovely OP!

I recently took in a donation (of lovely new stuff that I just don't / can't wear, so i hope someone is similarly delighted with my things) and found a pair of leopard Pretty Ballerinas for £25. I had been looking at them online and they are over £100. In my (unusually large) size which almost never happens!

Restinpeacefavouritecoathanger · 27/10/2024 20:56

Oh I would love a pink winter coat, such a beautiful colour on a cold dreary day! Well done for such a great find OP hope it brightens tomorrow x

EnjoythemoneyJane · 27/10/2024 21:05

Quite a few years ago I got a Temperley dress (£800+) for twenty quid, recently passed on to DS’s partner, who is as delighted with it now as I was at the time. I also found a McQueen jacket in the same charity shop that I passed on because it was £40, which felt like a bit much at the time!

Cudz · 27/10/2024 21:08

@EnjoythemoneyJane I think you're the winner of the best bargain!!!

I recently had a huge clear out of shoes and boots and donated a bin bag full to charity shop - I only gave them things I thought would sell well - some were designer brands like Valentino and manolo blahnik, others were FCUK, Zara, Dune etc
I just don’t wear heels any more and have put on weight so some were a bit tight
Pre Covid I used to sell on eBay but got fed up with the hassle of listing, posting items, dealing with buyers etc
I was so chuffed a few weeks after when I went back to same shop and they told me they’d made over £500 plus gift aid so far from my donation
What is quite amusing is I’m not that affluent and quite a few pairs I’d bought in charity shops myself - loved and worn briefly - redonated and then they had got back more than I’d paid in first place
win win all round - enjoy your coat it looks fab
I have spent last few days scouring charity shops for the perfect scarf for my sale bargain coat and not found anything so eventually bid (and won) for one on eBay tonight - fingers crossed it’s a good match
I love charity shopping and hearing about other peoples bargains!

@Beepbeepoutoftheway here is a screenshot of the coat on one of the sold out websites. Not to everyone's taste I know, but I've been wanting a pink winter coat for ages as I mainly wear blacks and grey's through winter and this adds a pop of colour. It's lovely and fitted on.

It’s beautiful, you were so lucky!

Cudz · 27/10/2024 21:40

@JaceLancs how amazing that you've raised so much for charity! 😊

Oooh now there's an idea about a scarf to match my new coat. I've literally just been on vinted and found a Joules one that could be the perfect match!!! X

My DD loves Vinted. She bagged a gorgeous ball dress, lace over silk over tulle for £15. Fits her like a glove. No idea what it retails for but it has to be a bargain.
America is great for thrift stores because they are huge. Last Christmas she bought on one trip to one store:
Four pairs of boots/shoes
Leather jacket
Velvet evening jacket
Tweed blazer
Printed velvet blazer
Two sweaters
Three skirts.
All for a grand total of $105 (about £80). We had to borrow an extra suitcase!

@Doggymummar I would love to do a weekend visit to a really high end part of London and spend it scouring charity shops for bargains although I have read that lots of people now do this and the charity shops price high so not really any bargains to be had these days. I'd never heard of Damsel in a Dress before but the quality is really lovely isn't it x

I am charity shop addict. I know people are all over going to 'expensive' areas to pick up good quality stuff but I don't agree. I don't find much difference and in these areas the prices are much higher. They have just as much Primark as any others they are just more expensive. It found a sweater I got in TK Maxx (one of TK Maxx's own brands - yes, they them) I already owned that was more than I originally paid.

The best ones to go to are usually the larger donation centres, sometimes on retail parks, that people can drive to and park outside. I go to my nearest town with can hardly be described as up or even mid market. There is one 'under £3' shop and one under '£5' shop. I don't make an effort, I just for 10 minutes when I passing - which is frequently as they are near the supermarkets I use.

I am extremely fussy - it has to be good fabrics and clearly un or very lightly worn. I've picked up lots of cashmere - regularly get scarfs for c£1 - my best buys include a Max Mara coat. I often pick up silver jewellery and, a particular passion, watercolour pictures including a few from, albeit lesser know, exhibited artists. Charity shops are fantastic for good quality leather handbags (although the really premium brands get filtered out in the sorting), hiking and sporting clothes (people buy then, wear once, give up and donate) and mother of the bride type outfits and shoes.

I feel a bit guilty about doing so well, especially on the jewellery front, but me and my family are closely involved with a charity and I plan to leave a good chunk of my estate to it stating it for the sheer enjoyment of all the incredible bargains I have found.

Seasidewalker · 28/10/2024 08:15

That coat is glorious 😍

I love a good bargain, but with WFH I don't get into a town very often and the one shop in our smaller town is very expensive.

My latest bargain is a free (I'm a volunteer) Laura Ashley floral shift dress that was left over at the end of our jumble sale - we separate "better" clothing onto a rail. I've been on the hunt for a wedding outfit for next spring and this is gorgeous.

I've added a Hobbs jacket from Vinted at £16 which is in prefect condition.

Will make the effort to do a charity shop trawl soon!

GettingStuffed · 28/10/2024 08:49

I had similar a country casuals red coat for £12. It has back buttons and taped seams remember this on a coat?
