What to do with my thin hair (wigs? shave it?)...

Startingagainandagain · 27/10/2024 13:03

I have had thin hair since my mid-teens. I assume a combination of stress/trauma and genetics.

I have all the tests done (blood test to check hormones, thyroid, iron levels) to exclude a specific medical condition.

I have taken biotin and multivitamin supplements and used minoxidil for the past few years.

So there is nothing more I realistically can do to improve my hair and I am really starting to hate what I see in the mirror. The loss is especially visible on top of my head.

I am wondering whether it is time to either:

  • use wigs
  • cut it really short (pixie) or even shaved.

I just wondered how other women in similar situation are dealing with this and any advice?

Bumping for you. I have the same issue...

I have had a hair integration system for about 4 years now. It’s not cheap but I adore it-it really has changed my life. Definitely not for everyone though, you have to do your research and see if it will work with your lifestyle.

@trockodile that looks marvellous and so natural too.

trockodile · 27/10/2024 13:51

Thank you-even the lady who waxes my eyebrows (so was pretty close!) didn’t realise until I told her (I love it so much I have to stop myself telling everyone 😂)

Hair toppers are great, go to a specialist shop if you can. They will help colour mstch etc, they can be trimmed, shaped etc. I got a synthetic one for £60, get loads of compliments, everybody thinks it is my hair.

trockodile · 27/10/2024 13:57

I have always had thin hair and have accepted it’s not going to change so the system-or other hair replacement options are pretty much for life. Wearing it full time forces me to get used to it, and it really feels normal now.

While I don't have experience of this, I ldid lose my hair during chemo and spent a lot of time researching wigs. I went to Raoul's (who are one of the best). In addition to wigs, they also make toppers. Depending on your budget, they can make a bespoke one.

@trockodile is upkeep very expensive?

Doggymummar · 27/10/2024 14:07

I got a weave last February before it got too bad and I love it. Long thick hair it's marvellous

SunsetlovIng · 27/10/2024 14:09

That is amazing @trockodile. You look superb!

beetr00 · 27/10/2024 14:11

@Doggymummar would you consider posting a disguised pic? No worries if not able to though🙂

@trockodile is upkeep very expensive?

Everyone is different and obviously salon prices will vary. The initial hair piece and fitting is about £700, then I get it washed and tightened every 6 weeks which costs about £75. The hair piece has to get taken off every3-4 months, and then refitted which is about £175. I budget for a new hair piece every year. You may need your natural hair coloured which obviously costs extra, my hairdresser doesn’t charge extra to trim my hair when she does the refit. I suspect this is on the cheap side as she works from a salon at home.

Hoplittlebunnyonrepeat · 27/10/2024 14:22

I have the same problem, I absolutely hate my hair and I don't think I would hate it any more if I shaved it. I have asked various professionals (drs, hair stylists etc) about the possibility of it growing back thicker/fuller if I shaved it. No one seems convinced it will. I've always had thin and fine hair, even as a child. But the last couple of years I've come to detest it and I barely do anything more than put it in a bun these days, just to try and hide it.

TurquoiseBear · 27/10/2024 14:27

This is fascinating, as someone who also suffers from thin hair. @trockodile you look fantastic! That upkeep sounds quite intense though. @doublec i hope you’re doing ok now. Raoul’s certainly looks worth checking out too.

Shhhthedogssleeping · 27/10/2024 14:28

trockodile. The cost and upkeep isn’t as bad as I imagined. Though prices will vary considerably between businesses. I pay £70 for a cut and blow dry every 8 weeks. It’s a ridiculous amount for what is involved, but the hairdresser is very good at making the most of the little I have, so I only go to him. I’m definitely going to look into this. Yours looks so natural.

trockodile · 27/10/2024 14:31

Thank you for the compliments -it has honestly given me so much confidence-my photo roll is full of pictures of me with lovely rugby players and I would not have done that with my old hair as I didn’t like to look at it. I can even put it in little plaits!

Wow! then that's really only just over £100 per month (after the initial outlay)

Well worth it @trockodile, you must be absolutely delighted.

Thank you everyone for the replies so far.

I will look at the Raoul wigs.

I am glad you found something that works for you @trockodile. I considered this but I was worried because I do a lot of sports including swimming and my scalp can get quite itchy, but that could be another option for me to explore.

It is interesting to read that other women have the same problem.

Funnily enough swimming is ok-I wear a silk sleep bonnet and then a large swim cap on top! I don’t swim seriously though, more aqua aerobics. It probably wouldn’t be great if you do a lot of sport though. Good luck finding something that works-it’s not easy 😔

doublec · 27/10/2024 19:18

@TurquoiseBear Am doing ok, thank you. My hair however is doing very very well, somewhat resembling a short but very wild bush. Am trying to power through to next Spring before I get it cut/styled!

Should you or OP decided to give Roaul's a try, you will find out they are lovely, so helpful and accommodating.

TurquoiseBear · 27/10/2024 20:11

Glad to hear you and your hair are doing well @doublec 👍🏻

I’ve already contacted Raoul’s!
