Balayage or highlights? To blend grey but NOT ‘go blonde’…

I guess I am about 15% grey, maybe 20% (I have a LOT of hair so it’s hard to tell!) Most of it is underneath the top layer but more and more it’s becoming visible near the front and on the sides.

My natural colour is sort of mid-light-brown, a bit mousy really these days, used to have a few richer auburn tones in it naturally but those have disappeared as I’ve got older.

I’ve only had hair colour once before in my life, an all-over ‘gloss’ that I hated because it ended up very brassy after a few months and took ages to fade. It made me darker at first but then went quite brassy after that. I didn’t like it even before it went brassy because it was just sort of one tone and didn’t suit me.

I am wondering about taking the plunge and trying some highlights to sort of blend the grey… I def don’t want feel as if I’m going blonde, a bit of a ‘lift’ is ideal but not actually blonde. Does this sound like highlights or balayage…? And if it’s highlights, would I need a full head or half a head? I appreciate it’s difficult (impossible?!) to answer if you haven’t seen my hair!! But just on a basic level, does balayage or highlighting sound like what I’m after…?

My hair sounds much like yours so watching with interest. I don't want to go blonde just now either.

Balayage with babylights!

Wingingit11 · 26/10/2024 18:33

Balayage is darker at roots though blonder in lengths isn’t it? So unless you have highlights im
mot sure it would work?

gocompare · 26/10/2024 18:37

I have the same colour hair as you I think.

I have a balayage with a face frame

Does balayage only work on long hair?

jackstini · 26/10/2024 19:26

Highlights in the T zone and ask for them to be ashed- they will tone more with roots

I am further down the line with 50%+ grey a d this really helped

Also moving towards reverse balayage (hairdresser said gradual process) where it's darker at the bottom than the top

Starting with ash blonde to ash brown then will move to more grey
Some pics I am using for inspiration in various stages!

Ah thanks everyone!

gocompare, this is probably the most dim question ever but what’s a face frame…? Is it some highlights around the face?

Highlights definitely

IAmAFirestarter · 26/10/2024 20:29

Highlights. That's what I've got and it definitely disguises the grey.

Porridgeislife · 26/10/2024 20:31

Half head of foils. Ask them to do two colours, one matching your natural colour and another a flattering lighter shade. They can also put a toner over the top afterwards maintain a slightly darker shade.
