Greasy hair solution

I have greasy hair, which I need to wash daily.
I'd love sometimes to just leave it for a day but I can't. If wash it one day, by the next morning it feels dirty and looks lank and, well, greasy.
Dry shampoo doesn't work.
I've tried expensive shampoos and conditions as well as supermarket own.
I've tried not conditioning.
I don't use styling products daily, and don't use much.
For info, my hair is straight and quite fine.
Any advice?!

I’d do a sleek parted pony on day 2. Slick the hair down so doesn’t matter if greasy and then dry shampoo and back comb tbe pony for a bit of volume. It’s very on trend at the moment and is always my day 3 hair style for the same reason as you!

Dry shampoo is the only answer I know of. Maybe try different brands?

Geneticsbunny · 27/10/2024 09:02

Try a shampoo with niacinamide in? I have oily skin and niacinamide has made it much less oily.

bouper · 27/10/2024 12:15

I've found nothing is as good as washing daily, but this is what helps me.
Blow drying my hair when wet and using mousse, no other type of product and making sure the roots are dry.
Dry shampooing my hair in the evening, not waiting til morning, and using Living Proof dry shampoo.
I also never use conditioner. And use a detox shampoo once a week.

Head and shoulders do a really good citrus shampoo for greasy hair.

Freemanhardyandwillis · 27/10/2024 12:20

Put some dry shampoo in before it looks greasy. Sounds daft but it helps.

This. Do it before bed then when you wake up it won't be greasy. Game changer for me.

Mumof1andacat · 27/10/2024 12:22

Do you air dry your hair? Air drying leaves hair greasy. Best to dry it completely with a hair dryer

sunshinechaser · 27/10/2024 12:25

I am the same. I use good old fashioned Vosene shampoo which contains salicylic acid and I think this helps dry the roots up a bit. I use this daily and as I'm getting older (peri menopausal) my hair is definitely getting dryer at the roots.
I have lank straight hair and I find this style makes greasy roots look much more obvious so I curl/wave my hair with GHDs which kind of hides the grease more.
The most effective dry shampoo I have tried is the Living Proof one-it's amazing!
I have a fringe and sometimes just wash my fringe in the shower (I use a shower cap on the rest of my head) and I can get away with another day without washing my whole head.

Invisimamma · 27/10/2024 13:59

I know you said dry shampoo doesn't work, but do you put a little bit on clean hair so that it doesn't give the grease a chance to set in? Or big spray of the roots before bed, don't rub it in and then style in the morning.

Use a clarifying/detox shampoo once a week and make sure your conditioner isn't too heavy and making the greatest worse.ake sure you're properly washing and rinsing your hair right to the roots too.

rockstarshoes · 28/10/2024 08:24

Conditioner just on the ends, dry shampoo before bed.

When you aren't going anywhere, WFH or a day at home don't wash it.

You need to train it!

sunshinechaser · 28/10/2024 11:36

@rockstarshoes you really can't train your hair to be less greasy. It depends on hormones and skin type. I have oily skin and greasy hair and no amount of not washing it to train it will help. I spent my 1 year maternity leave with greasy hair while I tried to train it-it didn't work!

HippoStraw · 28/10/2024 11:46

I’ve had this my whole life. Training doesn’t work for most in my opinion. At all.
I find really washing the scalp with a shampoo brush helps and I quite like the L’Oréal clay shampoo, then hairdryer not air dry.

Freemanhardyandwillis · 28/10/2024 15:19

Another one hear who fell for the "train it" hype. 6 weeks of grease till I finally caved!

CrushingOnRubies · 28/10/2024 15:22

I had greasy hair until I started dying it. It soaks up all the moisture. Get away with washing every 36/46 hours which I would never have dreamt of before

Isometimeswonder · 29/10/2024 13:45

Thank you everyone.
I haven't tried the dry shampoo before bed trick, so will give that a go.
Very helpful, as I do shifts and can't always wash my hair before work.

If your hair is light you can use corn starch (about a quid a box), use sparingly and the night before; all dry shampoo is meant to be used the night before so it can work properly.

Mb12340 · 31/10/2024 00:11

Get your thyroid checked. No product in the world will fix it. It’s hormonal.

LightOfAThousandStars · 06/11/2024 09:04

Did you find something that works? I have the same problem and recently tried L'Oréal Hydra Pure which is helping because it's designed to treat an oily scalp with salicylic acid as one of the main ingredients.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 06/11/2024 09:08

Dry shampoo before bed works for me. I have used them all including the expensive ones but always come back to Batiste.

Also, IDK if you have a fringe, clipping back the rest of your hair and just washing and drying your fringe can really freshen your look.

Deathraystare · 06/11/2024 10:22

I sympathise, I really do. Growing up , my hair was really greasy and I had a mother who because she only washed her hair about once a week if that (hers was dry) would not let me wash it anymore.

I was desperate. I found some soap shampoo (years before that was thing.) I could not understand why the lady serving was smirking at me. It was apparently for head lice!!!!! I did not care about shiny hair I just wanted the oil gone.

I ruined my scalp by putting eau de cologne on it - please don't do this. I now have a sensitive itchy scalp but Vosene does help and I love the smell! I am through menopause now and have the opposite - dry frizzy hair!!!
