Please help with my dry snapping brittle hair

I do think this maybe due to being peri menopausal but I noticed about a year ago my hair stopped growing and I could hear the snapping when brushing.

For the past 12 months I have changed things that obviously cause damage

  • stopped heat styling except on special occasions and if I do I have heat protection
  • once weekly wash with deep conditioning mask
  • ouai/bumble Sunday once a month
  • daily biotin and fish oils
  • using kerastase oil elixir
  • changed to a hairdresser that using olaplex when doing my roots and that's just twice a year

Nothing has changed, walking round the Trafford today and caught myself in the mirror, it's so broken and snapped and dry :(

Please help

Bump

Bumping for you OP. I also have very dry, brittle hair. I used to have silky hair but it changed when I had my children. I thought it was the fault of my high lights so I stopped having them and eventually they grew out. Made no difference. Still dry and frizzy. I never use heat. The one thing I do do that probably makes it worse, is wash it every day. I absolutely have to as my scalp is oily. I have tried and tried to leave it longer between washing but I cant because it itches so much. Bumping with the hope someone can advise!

Thyroid issues?

Atissues · 26/10/2024 22:22

My children have very long hair and swim several times a week. This has affected how dry their hair gets. They do use an anti chlorine shampoo after swimming. I have tried many products but have found Lidls Apple or coconut shampoo and conditioner is excellent. Put a fair bit of conditioner on. Leave for 5 mins. Then rinse and use a towel wrap. No heat.
Aussie leave in conditioner every day when brushing.

Its far softer from the above routine. I have tried lots of other far more expensive products and they have all made it worse/dryer.

Atissues · 26/10/2024 22:23

After buying a vast amount of products and then realising Lidls £1.00 products work better I do wonder if we are being conned with expensive products.

Stop colouring your hair!

Tabasco007 · 26/10/2024 22:27

Check your vitamin D and iron level, and maybe a general blood test to see what your hormones are doing. And a boar bristle brush.

middleagedspreading · 26/10/2024 22:31

Thanks everyone, I've just had all my bloods done and thyroid / iron all fine.

After reading on here last night I've bought some elastizer and coconut oil. Had the oil in my hair tonight and the PK stuff hasn't arrived yet

Ditch the hair dye

Topsyturvey10 · 26/10/2024 22:36

I'm having a similar problem
but mine seems to break off at the front. The hairdresser originally thought it might be baby hairs but it's definitely breakage.

Im now using Olaplex 6 after washing and conditioning then, once dried, I rub a drop of Moroccan oil between my hands and through my hair. It's only been a week and it seems slightly improved in texture already.

Time will tell if it reduces the breakage that's accelerated since the peri😩

Hi op I've also had dry hair the last few years and the biggest improvements from me have been using a hair wrap instead of a towel for drying off hair. My hair is also much better after being blow dried using a heat protector spray than it is when I leave it to airdry. I've switched to a wet brush and I tie it up in a bun when I go to bed. It's much better and I'm considering trying a silk scrunchie or silk bonnet to wear at night.

fallenbranches · 26/10/2024 22:48

Not sure if it will work for you but here are a few things that might help worth a try
Don't use a brush but a wide tooth comb.
Agree with PP about getting a specific hair wrap instead of regular towel.
I have long thick hair and am always heat styling and highlight it. Shampoos that really work to strengthen my hair are Kitsch, Body Shop banana, and Aussie range.

middleagedspreading · 26/10/2024 23:13

Been plaiting at night as I heard that was better than a bun? What's your thoughts?hairdresser too thought baby hairs from the biotin but it's breakage

What level is it snapping at ?
If my hair gets too long it makes my scalp hurt , I do get hair loss but I am menopausal.
I had extensive hair loss a couple of years ago after I was ill , it was so thin and cotton woolley .
It grew back but very wavy almost like corrugated .
I used Olaplex and PK , about once a week or so (alternated ) and Morrocon Oil before I washed it during the week .

I use Aveda Shampure and occasionally BS Ginger

I was going grey but about 4 months ago I thought "sod this" and I use a wash in toner (Bleach London) I'm not going back to dye but this gives a wash of colour .
I'm going to have more length off next hairdresser appointment

Edited to add - I don;t use heat , my hair dries quickly . I use a hair turban wrap , cotton not microfibre .
I really don't like having my hair blow dried though it looks great , the tension of the brush is too much for me .
I invested ( invest is the word as it is ££) in a Dyson Hairstrait , I can use on a cooler setting and it dries/straightens in one with no pulling .
