I’ve bought some box dye, but I’ve come this far…

I’ve been growing my natural greys out since January this year. I’m 39 and at least 50% grey (been told so by two separate hairdressers now). I think I really do have a lot of grey for my age.

I have about 4-5 inches of grey growth showing through now, mingled with my natural very dark brown coming through at the same time. There’s a very clear demarcation line between my grey grow out and the previously dyed hair. My overall hair length is a bob, so there’s another roughly 6 inches of previously dyed hair after the demarcation line. It’s a mess. The worst part is that the dyed hair has turned really brassy.

So, yesterday, I bought a home dye. I’m tempted to use it, but then I know I’ll be undoing all the time of growing out the grey. I think I’m at the worst possible stage of looking like a badger, and also growing out a previously dodgy long pixie style cut. Having a hair cut on Weds, so hopefully that will improve things a bit. What should I do?? Any advice very welcome.

If you're trying to grow out the dye I'd hold off on the box dye, at least until after your hair cut. A good hair cut can blend it in beautifully.

STEP AWAY FROM THE BOX... I haven't dyed mine for 18 months. Few blonde bits still mixed in but about 90%grey. Try grey shampoo /conditioner
. Try tying bits of hair back /up to disguise the change in colour.. Nearly hat weather.. DON'T GO BACK OP....

I think if you have made the decision to be grey, you should resist the urge to use the dye.

(But if I’m honest, I would hate to be grey, especially at just 39.)

I too have a Bob that I love, but an already frustrated with my one inch grey roots!... I'm at the hairdressers next week so going to discuss options - perhaps paying to have all the colour stripped out?.. the hair at my temples is white, my parting is salt/pepper bits of grey... I'm a lot older than you, but fed up of the constant touch ups!

Thanks @Stormyweatheroutthere yes tying it up actually really improves it, I’ve just had a go!

Would a semi-permanent dye work on your hair?

Figsonit · 24/10/2024 12:59

Could you bring the length up to the bottom of your hairline at the nape of your neck? So a very short bob for the moment.

You have just about enough growth there to chop off the still dyed bits so stay away from that box! If your hair is naturally very dark, you must be rocking a great salt and pepper. A purple toner or shampoo can enhance the steeliness of the grey and may help tone down the brassiness of the dyed bits while you have them.
