Ptosis

I'm having surgery for ptosis next week. I was wondering if anyone had experienced it and what the recover was like. I can find loads of information on upper blepharospasty but not a lot on the ptosis procedure.

I'm very heavy lidded so I'm.hoping it will improve my vision and looks.

I’ve not had it but I'm curious - is it a specialist surgeon or a chain type place (eg Signature) you’re using?

I have developed ptosis (been told by nhs oculoplastic surgeon that it’s age & contact lens use related). NHS won’t touch it until it impacts my vision. Have also been advised to wait until it’s worse (currently 1-2mm) because of the risk of over correction.

It may technically be 1mm but it looks very noticeable to me & I’d like to get it fixed.

@FunnyCradock I was bad enough to have it done via the NHS but as I've got private health insurance I've opted for that. I'm having it done by a special occular plastic surgeon. I look pretty bad and it's contact lens related.

Hope it goes well @Firenzeflower
Interesting about the contact lens link.
I don’t recall this being cited as a risk 20 years ago 🤔 (but then would 27 yr old me have listened?!)

Firenzeflower · 24/10/2024 18:13

So do I!! @FunnyCradock Thank you

There’s much less about ptosis online compared to other eye conditions I find. I’m in a couple of Facebook groups about ptosis and blepharoplasty which might have helpful posts if you’re a Facebook user? I haven’t had the surgery yet but I’m looking into it.

What ??? I did not know contact lens use can cause this ??

How ? 🤯

BlackSwan · 24/10/2024 18:45

Hi Firenzeflower. Are you having one or both eyes done? I had one eye done about 3-4 years ago & the surgery was all done under the lid. The recovery was very smooth. The first night was quite uncomfortable (still manageable, but hard to rest properly from memory) but after that it was much easier. Lots of drops and ointment - stayed at home for several days but it all went well. Happy with the result. Ptosis not gone completely but much improved. I gather (hard to tell in relation to your own eyes) that before I had it done my eyelids didn't go up and down in unison (how pretty...) but now they do, so that's a huge improvement.
Wishing you luck and a great result too!

I know someone who had it done on the NHS recently. He said it was sore when he went home (same day) but more achey and he took cocodamol for the soreness.
He had the stitches out after a week.
He was told to take 2 weeks off work and was fine to go back (he works in an office). He was driving after a week.
I saw him and he looks a lot younger! He's very pleased because he can read more easily now.

Firenzeflower · 24/10/2024 19:56

@BlackSwan both eyes and it will be done under the lid. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. That all sounds very reassuring to hear.
@LorettyTen Thabks. That's good to hear. I do look awful. Very tired. I'm so tired of people telling me I look tired when I'm not!!

@iloveshetlandponies Yes. But I wore mine everyday for about 25 years and never wore glasses. I also wore gas permeable which are quite rigid.

@iloveshetlandponies the consultant told me it’s from repeated overstretching of the muscles (when you put the lenses in & take them out)
🤷🏼‍♀️🤯

I had it done. It was easy, painless and I'm over the moon.

Good for you, I'm glad it went well and you're pleased with the result.

circleback · 01/11/2024 18:59

Good to hear! Would you mind sharing more about aftercare and bruising etc?

BlackSwan · 02/11/2024 07:30

Fantastic news!

Firenzeflower · 05/11/2024 04:26

@circleback Very easy recovery. I had to sleep upright for about 6 days - well at a 45% angle. I wore eye guards at night and I've been putting in eye drops. A tiny bit of soreness but not real pain.
It's been really easy.

Thank you. I’m glad it’s been straightforward.

I've just found this post and wondered if you'd mind sharing what the criteria was to get this done on the nhs. Not sure if I'll fit the criteria or to look and going private. Many thanks
