Help me fix my frizzy hair

My hair has always been thick and, since puberty, has been wavy/curly (I think it's 2c/3c). However, since pregnancy it's essentially given up any effort to be curly and is now just madly frizzy. I can coax it into curls with the help of a lot of mousse, but that lasts about half a day until the curls disintegrate and I look like I've stuck my hand in an electric socket. I can also straighten it, but it takes forever and is pretty pointless in the winter as the slightest dampness turns me back into Sideshow Bob. Even when tied up I have mad sticking-out hair around my face and hairline. It's a bit of a horror-show!

I've tried Olaplex, which did nothing, and a Brazilian blow dry which improved things very slightly but definitely not as much as I need to justify spending £300 on a treatment every couple of months.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this mess? Money is not an obstacle (within reason - I'm not up for weighting down the frizz with diamonds, or gold plating individual hairs) but I would like it to actually work.

Picture attached below. I know it needs a cut but I'm struggling to see the point when I have it tied up all day.

Also thanks everyone for the Afro product suggestions. There are a couple of Afro specialist hairdressers on my local high street. I'll pop in and ask if they have any recommendations.

Gotta say, I was expecting having children to wreck my body: I did not expect that it would wreck my hair!

You have a lot of grey hair and the texture of grey hair is very different to hair that isnt yet grey. You cannot add moisture into your hair, you can only add product to the surface that will flatten the cuticles on the outside of your hair. Serums do this best. I have totally grey hair now. After washing, using tresseme products and Bleach London in blue to neutralise the yellow tones, I spray it with Colorwow Dreamcoat whilst damp then dry it straight blowing down the hair shaft away from the head. I then use a blob of John Frieda Frizzease to smoothie out the outer layers. I also bought a tangletease brush which seems to help a little.

The Aveda Be Curly range is fabulous for hair with your texture. Sometimes if you go to the Aveda counter in a department store they will give you free sample sizes of products to try. Or you could see if there’s an Aveda salon near you where they could talk through which products could help to achieve what you want.

The products work so well, contain lots of lovely natural ingredients and smell amazing.

I also have hair that was manageable until menopause but now it's awful. Have tried so many products some work for a while then stop. There is a hairdresser in Bristol called Nuala Morley she is on instagram she does Kelly Hoppens hair. She has lots of advice and I'm thinking of booking an appointment b. I have switched to Nope shampoo and conditioner bars. The difference is incredible my hair is in the best condition it’s ever been in and I have so much new growth (I had struggled with stress related hair loss after the death of a close relative). After trying many much more expensive products and treatments Nope has been by far the best. The frizz is totally gone and the shine is unbelievable. They bars smell beautiful too. If you sign up to their mailing list you get 10% off your first order I can also send you a link for a further £2 off.

Yes! My hair has got really bad since I hit perimenopause. I don't want to cut it short as I like my hair long. Weirdly during lockdown when I went 6 months without a hair cut it was in really good condition (a bit like my waistline😆) but perimenopause decided to mess with that.

Also everyone started changing their products slightly and I really struggle to find one that works. I used to use Frizz Ease but whatever they now put in it made me hair lank and frizzy!

RaraRachael · 22/10/2024 17:02

Your hair looks very like mine. I use Tresemme lamellar shinye shampoo, conditioner and leave in spray. For the first time in my entire life I'm happy with how my hair looks.

Oh this is good to know. I've been thinking about trying those for a while.

I was worried it was over hyped on instagram but it’s one of the only products I’ve bought that truly lives up to all the amazing reviews. Feels good that cutting down on buying plastic bottles too. https://nope.peachs.co/r/knlwastglf This link will give you money off I hope it helps if you
try it. Xx

I don't know if it's available in the UK but I use By Veira Curl Shampoo. It's sulphate and silicone free so ideal for curly hair. It also smells of lilac which is lovely.

Lots of conditioner and hair masks for moisture.

ive found a ghd hairdryer and a barrel brush helps with sleekness.(and my hair is very similar to yours).

I then use L’Oréal glycolic gloss on damp hair, brush it through and finish drying.
then once dry add a small amount of the kerastase hair oil someone previously linked to.

Nimle77 · 25/10/2024 21:36

What's really helped my hair regain its curls is when I wash it I squish the conditoner out rather than rinsing . Tip your head over rub the conditoner in comb it through with wide comb then get water in the cup if your hand and squish it into the hair ,do this all over so it kind of washes the conditoner out but also leaves a coating . After Scrunch a bit of the wetness out but not too much using a micro fibre towel or an old T shirt .Then I use a curl gel like umberto giani scrunching gel ,run a generous amount through your hair scrunch and leave to air dry until almost dry then diffuse. It's all a bit trial and error with curly hair ,mine certainly has changed since I hit my forties . I used to have to dry from soaking with the hairdryer but now it prefers air dry until practically dry then diffusing. I find gels better than mousse or creams. Also use shampoo less often but wash with conditioner instead Good luck 👍

User37482 · 25/10/2024 21:40

Hair oil before a wash, I use nashi, it’s not very greasy, just mid lengths to ends. A tiny bit rubbed into your palms after it’s dried if you need a bit extra.

Standin · 25/10/2024 21:58

The more natural the better, not stripping or coating the hair. It allows your hair to be miosturised by its own oils.

This is a fabulous brand. I have used the moisturising bath and conditioner.
There is also a curl range.

I have a lot of hair, but it is thin. 2b I believe. All I want is to be able to wash and go and not look like the witch from Robin Hood Prince of Theives.

I think I have something that works, for now. Redkin Frizz Dismiss and them Cantu curl activating cream. It isn't perfect but has started to look much better.

Sheknowsaboutme · 26/10/2024 16:36

Get your self a curly cut. I have one each year. And I only use sulphate free shampoo.

i do splurge on only curls, but well worth it. Your hair desperately needs moisture. Make sure its soaking wet when diffusing it.

AltitudeCheck · 26/10/2024 16:48

Only brush or comb it just before a wash or when it's got conditioner on it. Use shampoo only every other wash, always use a conditioner every time. Soft water makes everything better! Use a cotton cloth (old T shirt) to remove the excess moisture, never a towel and never rub it, and then Milkshake incredible leave in conditioner. Let it air dry loose or pile it up on your head in another cotten wrap. Silk pillow case.

Boots curl creame - cheap and the most amazing product.

Agreed. Secret is out though, gets sold out so quickly in my local boots.

OP I leave in my conditioner and I don't use shampoo, ever.

Another vote for Airstrait, John Frieda leave in conditioner and Moroccan oil.
Or the smoothing brush on Dyson Airwrap.

FastFood · 28/10/2024 19:38

I recommend using a silk wrap at night. Mine is from Silke and it's been a game changer.

Also, a good hair dryer and a good shower cap for the days you don't wash your hair.

melissasummerfield · 28/10/2024 19:45

Only curls !

spannasaurus · 28/10/2024 19:47

One thing that's made a massive difference in reducing frizz for my very curly hair is using a solid shampoo bar. Doesn't seem to make much difference which brand it is.

BookishType · 28/10/2024 19:54

You need beefier products. If I used just oil and spray, I’d look like Hagrid.

I’m curly and use a leave in cream, a strong gel and a curly mousse. Applied to sopping wet hair. I only comb my hair in the shower, and a towel hasn’t been near it for 10 years.

I’d also recommend getting it cut by someone that specialises in curls.
