Something like this cardigan but wool?

I've been trawling online for something like this https://www.marksandspencer.com/cloud-yarn-cable-knit-longline-cardigan/p/clp60701946?color=GREYMARL
But that is actually wool. Everything seems to be polyester or acrylic. And if its wool it tends to be plain knit only. Obviously if its wool I expect it to be much more cost wise

Basically, a long cardigan, chunky or cable knit, grey, ideally a darker grey than this, but also open to blues or neutrals.

Any ideas? Thanks

House of Bruar?
Wool does cost quite a lot more. But I've bitten the bullet this autumn and shelled out for real wool because 1) It's so much warmer, and 2) I realised I've had some of my wool knitwear for 20 years and it still looks ok. Polyester/acrylic won't last that long and isn't half as warm.

Find someone to knit for you? Not sure how much it will cost.

Marbledwhite · 21/10/2024 09:34

Look at Woolovers coatigans. They have pure wool Aran as well as plain styles.

Celtic and co do cardies in 100% wool, nice but pricey

Thank you for all of these, they all cut off about the knees and it's the extra length that I love. When they are long like this, they seem to just be smooth www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/cardigans/felted-longline-cardigan?colourid=500

It seems really hard to find the extra length, chunky, but in wool - maybe it's the cost. I'd be expecting it to be pricey so maybe its just not a commercial thing. Like the idea of someone knitting it for me - I might have a look locally. Thanks!

What about this one in the woolovers sale? Only small sizes left though.

It is nice and a good price! Sadly I think small is pushing it as I'm more like a medium. It might be worth a punt at the sale price. Thank you!

Ive never had to return anything to wool overs so dont know how easy that would be, but if thats what you’re looking for I’d give it a go. I’ve only got one thing from them and it did seem pretty generous on fit but that doesn’t translate to everything from them being oversized.

A small fortune is the answer to this. It would be hours and hours of work, even for the most experienced knitter.

Even the wool would cost well over £100. Paying someone a living wage to knit it would come to a 4 figure sum. I don't think people appreciate this when they say to find someone to knit one.

Justgoingintotown · 21/10/2024 14:30

I’m a new vinted convert for exactly this reason. I used to get a nice new piece of knitwear every year or two from m&s or similar, but it’s become increasingly impossible to find clothes that aren’t made of polyester, even though the prices would make you think otherwise. I found two long fisherman’s rib type woollen cardigans almost straight away on vinted for £15 each. Think they were both Carraig Donn brand but there were others on there too.

RedPalace · 21/10/2024 15:14

Thanks for the comments re knitting it. As you can probably guess I know next to nothing about knitting but had assumed either handmade or shop bought in wool would be very pricey. As I'd see it as a long term investment piece then I'd be OK with that. However, what I've got in my mind doesn't seem to exist - possibly because it's just not financially viable, which is fair enough.

Thanks for the vinted suggestion - I'll have a look

Would real wool be really hard to wash & dry too?

TodayThisName · 21/10/2024 16:03

I second the suggestion to try Vinted. I have bought quite a few wool jumpers and cardigans from there and the most I have paid is about £40 (for a chunky Toast jumper).

I always check them carefully for holes and freeze them in a bag when they arrive - I'm told this kills moths and moth eggs.

Long wool items can be really heavy too, so to get length without the weight distorting the shape of the garment you’d need premium wool. Hence that Celtic and co one being in extrafine merino. I have made myself something like this but in a chunkier wool in which the cables wouldn’t look the same.

Yeah, I spent a while trying to work out if I could have a little market stall of knitted items cos whenever I went anywhere where I saw such a stall I felt a lot of the items were a bit naff. The answer was no, because as soon as you’re selling a really nice pair of socks you’re charging £40 and it’s not viable on a wee stall at your local craft fair.

AuntieDolly · 21/10/2024 15:59

Would real wool be really hard to wash & dry too?

It needs treating gently. Superwash wool can pill horribly very quickly and non-superwash tends to be harder wearing but sometimes scratchy and is very easy to shrink particularly when knitted into such a large garment.

Just for information, I had to return a new zipped cardigan last year to Woolovers as the zip didn't work. I was astonished at how quickly the replacement arrived. So I would have faith in their returns system.

PiggyPigalle · 21/10/2024 18:49

As mentioned above, the weight would distort a full length wool, cable knitted coat and Hell to wash.
I returned an Aran Crafts medium to TK Maxx yesterday, it came up large. Same as this one:

RedPalace · 21/10/2024 23:57

Thanks so much
The Zara on eBay is closest to what I had in my head. But given there are a lot of them on there it may be they are too heavy to be practical as some predicted. I might start looking at some other options with a wool mix in them.
