Glamorise my hair please

I usually tie my hair back or hide it under a hat and am outdoors a lot so it generally looks dishevelled. I have never styled it except during 3rd year of secondary school when I got a heated brush tangled in my bob. I don't own a hair-dryer or styling products. I would like to be able to make it look flattering especially as my face is rapidly sagging! Could people please advise what tools and techniques will enable me to get more volume on the top and sweep the sides away from my face Farrah Fawcett fashion, with least time and effort.

My hair is fine but plentiful and heavy and the top third lays flat so overall it assumes an unflattering A-shape (couldn't work out how to post a photo). It has some natural curl/wave that comes out when hairdressers use a diffuser but I would like to make larger waves and have more volume toward the top.

Where do I begin? Am willing to invest in a Dyson wrapper thing if it will make it easier or wear curlers to bed. Suspect I will give up if fully blow drying the whole lot is required, is this unrealistic?

To encourage the waves you could try switching to curly hair shampoo and conditioner. Something like cantu. It is silicone free to won't weigh it down . Then I would get some layers chopped in so that the top layer is a bit shorter and has less weight so it can curl more easily. Stop brushing you hair except when wet and maybe try putting a tiny bit of mousse in when it's very wet and letting it dry naturally. Those things will encourage the curls which should naturally give you more volume.

Thank you @Geneticsbunny I will try Cantu - and find some mousse, which I now remember from teenage years, right down to the scent!

I agree with @Geneticsbunny for a natural curly look. For something a bit more glamorous you could get some giant velcro rollers and curl the hair AWAY from your face on the top sections and then under (or out) at the ends. I'm only an amateur so not explaining very well, perhaps look at some hair styling videos on YouTube. Being as you have curly hair your style will hold a lot better than straight hair (like mine)

Thanks @Oblahdeeoblahdoe velcro rollers might be a solution, I want to add volume to the top, and swoosh the front sections away from my face in sweeping waves - similar to the 2nd pic though I will never be that groomed! The first pic is my hair freshly washed and air dried. There is a bit of nice movement at the bottom and the front looks okay on the right, however it will become gradually more lumpy in the front section as small kinks form which isn't flattering to my face shape/features/saggyness! I might ask a hairdresser about the cut, perhaps taking some of the weight out of the lumpy areas would give it more lift...

That picture you have is probably closer to my hair looked when freshly washed and air dried but not combed or brushed. I cba to do curly girl method so I just brush it out but sometimes in summer I let it do its thing. My hair is straight wavy and fine but lots of it. I personally don’t use mousse unless styling but Tresemme do a good styling mousse which I’ve got. I do also use a styling cream from Davines when styling too, can’t think of exact name. It gives texture.

Your hair is beautiful. It's a lovely colour and looks in good condition.

Just ask hairdresser to take a bit of weight out if you want it fuller.

But I'd say, leave it alone.

OP, I’ve found what I use, Schwarzkopf Keratin Mousse, Shine.

and Davines invisible serum, says it’s for satiny tousled looks. Actually to be fair I don’t think I’ve used the mousse and serum together but I could do.

Flippin' eck your hair is gorgeous! I'm sure a hairdresser could give you exactly what you want. Ask them to show you how to roll it as well 😉

Wow! You are glamorous enough! I was expecting Worzel Gummidge

Flora50 · 23/10/2024 06:52

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain fantastic, I am buying exactly those products.

Thank you folk for lovely comments on my hair! That is not its natural colour - after years accepting grey I decided to cover its natural ageing-tortoiseshell-needing-washed shade. It is nice though and if I were a decade younger I would embrace its kinks and waves and their messy appearance as some kind of surfer dudette look. With every passing year though I resemble my father more and more so that now I look like dad in drag on a day when he was especially tired and something had made him particularly angry. This is not a pleasing aesthetic so I want to style the top and front of my hair so it frames and disguises to best effect!
