What colour to dye white linen dress?

Anyone had any success dying a white dress a different colour?
Got the below 100% white linen dress in the summer ( bargain sale price) and have worn it a couple of times and I love the shape.
However I am considering dyeing it to make it a bit more wearable - the lining is 100% cotton too, so it should take.
There is some black stitching on the seams but that should look ok with whatever colour I choose. I thought black initially but think it may be a bit too funeral like.
I thought grey or burgundy or indigo... the dylon range is a bit limited or has anyone got any colour suggestions? Thanks Smile

It’s a gorgeous dress. Do you have to die it? It won’t be as beautiful if you do IMO.

oviraptor21 · 19/10/2024 10:28

Maybe a chartreuse or olive green?

ANagsHead · 19/10/2024 11:44

You know, I wouldn’t dye it.

It’s already perfect and the shape is predicated on being worn in warm weather. A linen dress in winter will have to be worn under a jumper or jacket - and the sleeves of the dress are way too puffy for that to look good.

It didn’t cost you much - save it until next summer. (That shape will still be current because so many people have similar dresses from this year that they’ll want to go on wearing.)

I’d go for teal - it’s a nice colour in summer and in autumn will go nicely with a rust coloured
sleeveless vest and some boots, so you can wear it throughout the year.

Burgundy would look nice but is there white stitching on the sleeve? If that isn't 100% cotton thread it would stay white and show through.

longtompot · 19/10/2024 16:40

I dyed a white cotton top from Monsoon with embroidery and broderie englais details green and it worked really well. The yarn used for the embroidery details didn't take but it looked nice in white.

Redfox · 19/10/2024 20:21

Thanks for comments and I may not dye said dress.

@ANagsHead yes i hear you about the sleeves and wearing a linen dress in winter when it's meant to be for summer.

@Schoolchoicesucks yes good shout re the white stitching in the sleeves..

Lovely dress. I don't think dying it will stop it being a summer dress and may spoil it.

bellocchild · 19/10/2024 21:43

Get the local cleaners to do it?

TheLeadbetterLife · 19/10/2024 23:14

I wouldn't dye it either, it's lovely and the colour is a big part of that.

For winter, you could layer it with a tartan or checked wool overskirt / kilt and shawl, Vivienne Westwood-style.

Isabelle70 · 20/10/2024 07:34

I wouldn't dye it, any parts that are not 100% cotton won't take the dye. Also if you did dye it, it could come out patchy.
It a lovely summer dress.

Good call. Or a tweed or wool waistcoat. Overskirt and waitcoat would be too much but one or other would be fine. With a waistcoat you could add a cotton underskirt.

In either case , boots and opaque tights.

Dawevi · 20/10/2024 10:08

I wouldn't dye it, it's lovely in white, I would just keep it for warm weather

ANagsHead · 20/10/2024 10:14

Yes … It would be quite fun to see how far you could push the layering!

Assume a thermal vest. Then:
A collared shirt.
Then a fairly thin, fitted, long sleeved roll neck jumper over that - so the shirt collar peeps over.
Then the dress.
Then a furry or tweed gilet.
Add arm warmers.
Then an enormous tweed or quilted coat.
And knee high boots, of course.

Dress ready for winter!

twilightcafe · 20/10/2024 10:33

I think you'll regret dyeing that dress.

It's gorgeous as it is.

Don't dye it!! Far too nice to risk ruining it , lovely dress as it is

Redfox · 20/10/2024 11:25

Ok ok I won't dye and it will probs won't transfer as I see it in my minds eye.

So anyone know seen or know where I can find a similar autumn / winter style dress with nipped in waist for now?

There is still lot of tent like dresses around and I have a waist.. crap legs but good waist Smile

I've never heard of Doen but they have some gorgeous dresses! Also love the Paloma dress - shame it has sold out. Would be the perfect holiday dress (and such a bargain!)
