Waxing yourself

Hey everyone,

Does anyone here have a waxing kit and do all their waxing themselves?

I am extremely hairy , there's not one part on my body that's NOT hairy I think I have undiagnosed PCOS tbh.

I usually just shave , it's annoying I'm having to shave 2-3 times a week, when I shave the hair is there the next day. I like being completely hair less. I'm also really prone to razor rashes , ingrown hairs and razor bumps... when I shave my bum I get acne :(

I've never been for a wax with a professional before the thought of it makes me nervous and it sounds really painful, however the thought of me doing it sounds okay.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Should I get a wax pot and then the wax melts , or normal wax strips like the veet ones, or does anyone use the sugar wax?

I'm willing to spend the money for a good wax kit , as it's something I would like to do in the long term.

Tell me your experiences, even if you get it done by a professional.

Or what about an epilator?

Get a wax melting pot, pot of wax, and strips and the wooden sticks from Amazon.

Apply the melted wax using the stick, spreading the wax in the direction of hair growth. Press a strip on in the same direction and rip it back up in the opposite direction.

I have done my own legs and armpits in this way my entire adult life. Do NOT attempt to do your own bikini wax unless you're just doing the bikini line area.

I have always used the wax strips to do legs and under arms. Could never be bothered with hot wax. I also have an epilater.
Both are fine, I find them easy to use.

Occasionally go for a bikini wax, they know what they're doing and it's very good. It hurts but isn't unbearable.

I know you're asking about waxing, but if you can afford it go for laser removal, this does depend on your skin tone and hair colour - the fairer the skin and darker the hair the better it works, but it's a fake changer & there's often offers on a course, I think I paid about £150 for 6 sessions, but 100% worth it.

I'm a trained beauty therapist and can only wax my legs and underarms, trying to pull the skin taught and ripping the wax off isn't easy. Different wax for different areas too, hot wax if it's bikini area, so a pot with wax beads, warm wax with cloth strips for legs. Underarms depends on the direction of hair growth, if it's different directions hot is better.

I’ve tried but always end up a sticky mess. I use an epilator for legs and arms instead which is much easier for me. I’ve tried the hard wax on the bikini sides and this is a clean wax but takes forever so I don’t use this on legs or arms.

EmeraldSakara · 19/10/2024 10:55

Op, I strongly recommend you try a Philips Lumea. They are quite an expensive outlay but worth every penny. Much easier l, cheaper and more convenient than laser hair removal in a salon. I used to go to a salon for laser hair removal and was frequently told the therapist wouldn't be able to complete the treatment as I was too tanned etc. It is designed to work over a period of a few months, you complete the treatment once a month or so and the app will remind you when it's time to do another treatment. I completed my first round of treatment on my legs, forearms, under arms around three years ago and have been pretty much completely hair free since then. You may have to do the occasional touchup but nothing like you are currently doing. I honestly can't recommend this thing highly enough!
They often have really good deals on Black Friday at John Lewis, Amazon etc so worth checking there before buying one. Good luck.

notinthefingmood · 19/10/2024 11:10

Home IPL
Phillips one is good.
I brought mine in the Black Friday deals and it's worth its weight in gold.
Which I'd done it years ago.

Doggymummar · 19/10/2024 11:14

I tried once, and didn't have the courage to rip it off! Had to sit in a very hot bath to remove the wax. Epilators are the devils spawn. I got one for Christmas one year did one strip on my calf and returned it.

botemp · 19/10/2024 11:17

Echoing the Philips lumea recommendation. I also have PCOS and was skeptical and you do need to use it more often than people without it to see the same results but you do get results. Some areas are more stubborn than others though.

As for wax, I've had it done professionally and done it myself. I'd definitely go professional if you can afford to, they're faster and can get to difficult areas a lot easier, it also tends to be less painful as they're quick and you're not anticipating it.

Matildahoney · 19/10/2024 11:57

To echo others, the lumea can also be bought from Phillips on a monthly payment plan.

GreenGrass28 · 19/10/2024 14:19

Another one for the Lumea. I have been very hairy my whole life but since using the Lumea about 7 years ago I now only have to shave my legs once a week and my arm hair is so fine (I had super noticeable hairs before) that I don't do anything to them any more and my bikini line has one or two odd hairs that I pluck. Only area it didn't really work on was my under arm, but i’ll take that!

Redruns · 19/10/2024 15:00

I use an epilator. I've been doing it for years and it's barely mildly uncomfortable now, but you will need to brace yourself initially.

That said, I was sick from the shock/trauma of it the first time I had some waxing done, so probably no worse than that! Both ways, it improves.

I could do some waxing on myself now, but I don't think I'd have been able to finish the job in the first few years.

Redruns · 19/10/2024 15:01

The Lumea only works on dark hair? I've often been tempted but I understood it wouldn't work for me.

Bearpawk · 19/10/2024 15:10

Op do you have Caucasian skin and dark hair ? If so, I also recommend Phillips lumea or similar.
Honestly has been life changing for me and I wish I got one in my early 20s when I got my legs and bikini line out a lot more !

Bearpawk · 19/10/2024 15:10

Redruns · 19/10/2024 15:01

It's more effective when there's a 'contrast' so lighter skin/ darker hair

Crazyeight · 19/10/2024 15:14

I have the braun version of the lumea which works the same and a bit cheaper I think. As pp said, with pcos I found I needed to use it weekly to begin with and more often than most to maintain but it's pain free and does actually stop growth.

Waxing was always pointless for me because it would be growing back within a few days.

Thingamebobwotsit · 19/10/2024 15:20

I have waxed myself. Agree with others the bikini area is hard.

My preference is an epilator and Philips Lumea IPL now if your hair is dark enough. Game changing. If not, an epilator is much easier and less messy than waxing and can be used on most areas. The first few times hurt but if you stay on top of it, it becomes much easier.

StarlightLady · 19/10/2024 17:30

I have regular Hollywood waxes. The first time is the worst. Take 2 paracetamol beforehand and not just before a period. After a whike the body appears to adjust to it. I no longer do the paracetamol anymore.

But l think any pain there, would be minimal compared to any home waxing attempts.

lf you do opt to keep shaving avoid shower or shaving gels; use hair conditioner.

Northernluce · 19/10/2024 23:00

I do use waxing strips on my legs and arm pits, they work great once you’re used to them. I use veet ones from boots but I’m sure there’s plenty of other good options. Never used them on ‘sensitive’ areas though but I’m sure you can but I prefer to shave. I’ve never considered shaving my bum though lol I’m not sure how that would even work 😂

Lovelysummerdays · 19/10/2024 23:20

Use an epilator. I used to have a glass of two of wine to take the edge off especially before under arms. I think the roots regrow shallower as it doesn’t hurt now I’ve been doing it for years. Best to keep on top of it if you run epilator over once a week or so then you just get sparse regrowth.
