Postnatal dressing for nursing

I'm 2 months post birth and have no idea what to wear. I'm breastfeeding. I'd really appreciate advice on what kind of clothes migjr be suitable.

I was a size 16 before getting pregnant and my boobs have got so enormous I'm a 16/18 now. I've also still got quite a saggy belly.

I'm tired and eating quite a lot of chocolate biscuits and have no plans to diet until things are a bit more settled.

I can't find anything that doesn't make me look enormous. I have one jumper tunic from seraphine I've worn with leggings that doesn't look too bad. Tops with trousers emphasise my belly, they look ghastly.

I thought maybe leggings with longish shirts and a long cardigan? But then felt I was flashing everyone when feeding.

I'd appreciate outfit suggestions that look alright and are practical for juggling a small baby (eg machine washable)

I really struggled with this too! It's hard enough with learning to dress your new body but adding in accessibility makes it 10x harder.

What about wrap tops/ dresses that you can pull down? Theres some brands that make nursing tops and jumpers that you can unzip too.

dinglehopperandwhatnot · 17/10/2024 01:14

Urgh I feel you. I think I wore those breastfeeding clippy vests with a cropped jumper on top, which kind of worked.
So jumper easy to lift up, clip boob out and vest still covered my tummy.
Mostly I just stayed in though to avoid the hassle which I don't advise

I liked having a stretchy camisole on underneath a shirt I could pull up or pull aside. That way my belly was always covered. Feeling like my belly was on display was what made me feel exposed and uncomfortable

pull top up, camisole down, and then nurse.

Thanks, I'm glad it's not just me!

I tried vest top underneath shirt and pulled it down but felt very very exposed. I've done the same outfit (long shirt, vest top, leggings) and pulled the vest top up and felt much more covered (with maternity leggings on underneath covering tummy).

I also prefer brightly coloured / patterned clothes and that adds an extra wrinkle as everything tends to be so boring, all neutrals and plain (really need patterns with sicky baby!).

Maybe a shirt dress over leggings with vest top?

Also wondering about knitwear now it's getting cold...I'd love something like this but in bold stripes.

One of my friends (who's also big breasted) really likes smallshow nursing tops and dresses (on Amazon) as they give some coverage over the top of the boob when breastfeeding.

I like nursing vests under a loose t shirt/jumper - but I'm really small boobed so might not work so well for you!

Chaispice · 17/10/2024 02:06

Those clippy vests, and a jumper or knitwear
You clip the vest down and pull the jumper up, so you’re totally covered. The vest keeps your stomach covered too so you’re not having to get your whole torso out!
also jumpsuits and dungarees slide down for ease.
there are loads of gorgeous breastfeeding clothes with side zips, but I feel like they only work if you have tiny boobs. But maybe I’m just doing it wrong.

I am in the same boat too! I love seraphine dresses- they do ones with jumpers at the top and floaty skirts at the bottom and they disguise the belly with giving good coverage and warmth at the top. I highly suggest looking on Vinted.

Gatecrashermum · 17/10/2024 02:31

Love smallshow tops - just saw a photo of me in one with trousers which was deeply depressing

I'll check out the dresses

I'm in the same boat! I'm normally a size 10 but 3 weeks postpartum and I've still got sma belly! I'm struggling as i normally wear high necked shirts and dresses! I've been wearing shirts and shirt dresses but i mighty get some of these vests!

Three things from Beyond Nine:

Boilersuit Several colours.

Dress Brighter colours and stripes available - once they’ve re-stocked sizes.

Jumper

They’re not the cheapest maternity brand but can probably be found on pre-owned sites as well.

Denim Coverall - Mid Blue

We make feel good clothing for life. Comfortable enough for everything, ready for anything.

I recommend this style tops/dresses from
Jojomamanbebe. They have a high neckline and flap that comes up in the middle so you can breastfeed without feeling your whole chest is on show. Then a big drapey cardigan on top for extra warmth/comfort.

I got loads of pregnancy/BF clothes off eBay as they are often worn for a quite short period of time so I didn’t want to buy expensive brands at full price!

I think this year is particularly difficult if you like bright colours. I suit jewel colours and brights (I am a ‘bright winter’) and look dreadful in all the khaki/beige/muted colours that are everywhere at the moment. I went shopping on Saturday and couldn’t find anything that suited my colouring apart from the odd black or white thing.

It’s a while since I was nursing a baby but one of my favourite outfits was a wrap cardigan with a vest top underneath so I could pull the cardi down and the vest up.

You could look at long cardies, oversized shirts, kimonos etc
