Cosy jumpers for a menopausal woman

Hotandbothered222 · 16/10/2024 20:52

I’ve spent the day feeling hot an bothered in an M&S polyester jumper and I’m fed up. It was like being encased in plastic - I could literally feel the ‘fabric’ squeaking.

What materials am I looking for that will be cosy, wash well, and not cost the earth? I just can’t do polyester any more! Any good suggestions for something I can buy on the high street (I’m not keen on online shopping).

It sounds as if you need to be stocking up on entirely natural fibres, so

Community Clothing

is by far your best bet. They do not have a permanent physical shop; they do have clothes that will help you. Link is to sweatshirts and hoodies - all 100% cotton and made in the UK. But their 100% wool knitwear is highly recommended if you’d prefer that.

Thanks, I’ll take a look. Hopeful bump for the morning crowd!

I find cotton jumpers are much more comfortable than wool, woolovers and lands end do some nice ones.

Lentilweaver · 17/10/2024 12:24

Marking as I have the same issue and also take the Tube so need layers.
One thing I am doing is switching to mens jumpers.
They seem to have more wool or cotton.

Lentilweaver · 17/10/2024 12:26

Oh, Rapanui does some nice cotton jumpers which wash well.

Cuppachuchu · 17/10/2024 12:27

Community clothing styles are a bit ordinary looking for the price. Is it just me?

Lentilweaver · 17/10/2024 12:31

I like that utilitarian style of CC . No frills and ruffles.

They are not meant to be fashion, they are long lasting, well made (in the U.K.) classics.

JadedFilly · 17/10/2024 12:33

@Cuppachuchu, it’s their provenance that dictates their price. Read this and maybe they’ll start to look more exciting to you:

Woolovers are good for natural merino/cashmere or lambswool jumpers. Poetry for linen. Lands End for cotton. Uniqlo for wool, cotton or cashmere. Any other shop might have a few in their collection. For instance I picked up a 100% merino jumper from Next and a 100% fine cotton one from Uniqlo in the last few weeks. The Community Clothing lambswool jumpers are quite a thick quality, very much an outdoor/weekend/cold house jumper IME.

Cuppachuchu · 17/10/2024 13:11

I do get that Community Clothing's thing is provenance, and it's completely admirable. But, the jumpers and shirts look a bit boxy, and pleated jeans would not suit me. Each to their own.

JadedFilly · 17/10/2024 13:21

Uniqlo for wool, cotton or cashmere.

Are you joking?

I’ve admired Uniqlo’s determined democratisation of contemporary style - but provenance has always been their weak point, and it’s worse now than ever. Things that used to be 100 cotton are now only available mixed with polyester or whatever. Despite all the excitement over Claire Waight Keller’s arrival as Creative Director, label scrutiny is just too time consuming and disappointing now.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/10/2024 13:33

I have given up on wool and anything thick since the menopause. I coped better with hot flushes by layering up so I could easily whip off one or two layers as necessary to get back to a tolerable temperature and then get everything back on again when the moment passed. I like cotton and cotton blends. Linen in warmer months.

SirChenjins · 17/10/2024 13:37

Woolovers, Uniqlo (don't care), and Eribe are my go to's for wool. I buy the thinner versions if I'm layering and the thicker sweaters if I'm going to be outside.

Drivingoverlemons · 17/10/2024 13:39

H&M have a 70% cashmere loose roll neck. It’s lovely and feels quite light. I can’t wear unnatural wool anymore. I just feel weird and grumpy in it.

redtrain123 · 17/10/2024 13:41

I find I’m wearing more cardigans then previously, although it’s so warm here today, only in tshirt .

Hotandbothered222 · 17/10/2024 13:47

Thanks for all the suggestions - men’s jumpers is something I hadn’t thought of! Why do they always get the best of everything?! I guess I’m looking for cotton and I’ll just have to label check.

Sorry about Uniqlo but I can read a label and the 3d knit jumpers are 100% cotton.

Redcrayons · 17/10/2024 16:43

I’ve been slowly getting rid of all my old jumpers and replacing with wool or cotton.

if you’re not particularly petite, definitely look in the men’s section. Cheaper and better quality usually.

That’s great!

(But I can never find things that exactly suit what I want there any more, so have given up looking, either online or in store.)

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 17/10/2024 16:57

Nothing has ever matched Celtic and Co's super soft geelong jumpers, imo. I'm saving up for a new one. You've got to be careful when washing them though.
I know you don't like online shopping but it would be a crime if I didn't share my love for this particular jumper.

KnittedCardi · 17/10/2024 17:11

I generally stick to 199% Merino as it is light and fine, but warm. Wool is often too prickly, and cotton too heavy. Cashmere lovely, but often too hot. Recent purchases have been from White Stuff.

KnittedCardi · 17/10/2024 17:11

100% obvs!!!
