Which special piece of jewellery for a 16th birthday?

DD turns 16 around Christmas. She's not that into stuff and has already asked for tickets to 'the two Gl's' (Glastonbury and Glyndebourne) as her main gift from all the family. Which sounds perfect for her.

I'd like to buy her a special piece of jewellery she can keep forever, just from me. Up to £1500.

I was thinking about taking her to Milkkimoto in Bond Street to choose something special.

Any other ideas for special jewellery (I wondered about commission or her or me making something) or places we could go to find something.

Is it nicer to choose something so she can open it on the day, or ti take her ti choose something?

I have some mikimoto items bought for special birthdays and I absolutely treasure them!

Does she have pierced ears? A pair of diamond studs is an absolute classic you can wear for a lifetime, look good with everything and are so easy to wear (I do love my mikimoto items but they're harder to wear everyday due to the nature of pearls!).

What sort of style of jewellery does she like? There's quite a few jewellers who make incredible things around that area that you'd be able to commission from. You could even go down the vintage watch route perhaps, something nice for daily use again.

Thank you. She's just had her ears pierced so earrings are a big novelty but she only really wears good hoops and various danglies from my own student travels. She's getting a pair of beautiful diamond studs that belonged to her great grandmother from DH's mother, which is why I thought of pearls. It's lovely that you treasure your Mikkimoto pieces.

I would love to find a designer to her taste that could do a commission but I don't know where to start.

I'm thinking about buying my daughter a pair of Kiki McDonough earings. I love these as you buy the initial earings then can add different attachments in later years.

@motherstongue ooh, I'd never heard of that brand but there are some beautiful pieces there. A few I now covet for myself!

Yes. I have the same problem. Mappin & Webb stock Kiki McDonough if you’re near a branch and want to see before you buy.

I was going to say that any special jewellery I was bought was never really worn afterwards, although the budgets were not quite the same. I hope u find something suitable.
