Dress that shows off waist

I'd like a dress that shows off my waist; I don't feel that most dresses adequately show it off because the waistbands tend to be quite high.

I'm quite a curvy size 8/10, a bit of an hourglass, maybe pear, with quite wide hips that look awful with anything fitted. I do like dresses to be very fitted around the waist, though.

I want a sparkly Christmas dress with the following:

Long or sheer sleeves
Not low neck
Either A line or skater style.
Most important: a very defined waist.
I'll wear with black tights if above the knee.

*PS wrap dresses don't suit me.

Thanks!

I’d just like to have a waist!

Have you tried look at dresses for 'tall' people?
I'm not tall (pretty average at 5'6"), but I have a long torso, so also find the waistband sits too high and makes everything look frumpy.
I saw someone on here (AGES ago) suggest this and it's made such a difference! I had to have a couple shortened but if they're less than maxi length I don't bother.

Have a look at Nobody’s child - good at dresses that draw attention to the waist.

If you get a wrap dress you can tie it so it's in the right position to show your waist. If you're hourglass a wrap dress is generally a very flattering style.

Oops - edited as I've just seen you said wrap dresses don't suit you. That's a shame. They are usually so versatile.

I have a short torso but a clearly defined waist. Wrap dresses just make me look blocky

Thanks so much for these!
So I have weird, lumpy shaped hips which wrap dresses or any fitted dresses cling to. If it's more akimmy, it just looks like I've a nice hourglass shape. I love wrap dress3s ok other but I look awful in them.

This any good?

I have a couple of starlight dresses. I love them but think they tread a fine line between gorgeous and milkmaid. They definitely accentuate waists.

I size down at NC generally.

This is stunning! I feel like I would like additional snatchage around the waist. Any ideas?

@Sailonsilverrgirl they are beautiful! Totally what I'm looking for. I would like some kind of belt for additional sucky inny definition. Any ideas?

You could add an obi belt to really cinch your waist.

I have a similar figure to you by the sounds of things; I mostly wear vintage/ 50s style circle dresses. The tall idea for long torsos is also a good shout.
Collectif, Vivien of Holloway, Dolly & Dotty, Seamstress of Bloomsbury, British Retro, Emmy Design, Lady V, Limb/ Victory Parade, Miss Candyfloss and Lindy Bop are all my usual brands; something for all price points there!
Collectif went under but they’ve been bought by another company and will be starting up again soon. Ditto Lindy Bop. There’s also loads on eBay and Vinted, as well as a pop up shop selling old stock from both if you find yourself in Camden in October.

I will admit when I realised the 50s stuff suited me I kind of went all in, haha!

Glad you like it, I think that might be my xmas day dress but haven't ordered it yet. I recommend sizing down and you might not need to worry about making the waist smaller.
