Remind me that it is true that if you always dress down you feel silly dressed up but you look normal?

Have just discovered that I fit into clothes I couldn't get into before I fell pg, most of which are new and still nice/wearable. However, have spent the last year in baggy sweattops, trainers, and slouchy jeans.

When I look in the mirror in the good clothes I look "too smart" yet when I see other mums out and about they wear heeled boots, nice tops and just look normal and nice.

Please give me a cyber slap, fed up with myself.

slap!

YohoAhoy · 23/04/2008 13:40

I think if you're used to dressing in a certain way, then wearing something different will make you feel a bit self-conscious to start with - it takes you out of your comfort zone.

I bet you look fab

(Will slap if essential!)

NotABanana · 23/04/2008 13:41

I know exactly what you mean!

newgirl · 23/04/2008 14:22

i agree - but as long as you dont look like you are going to an office, you should be fine!

MargaretMountford · 23/04/2008 14:23

I can identify with this - I always feel uncomfortable if I look smart !

MrsBadger · 23/04/2008 14:24

[slap]

same is true of makeup

legacy · 23/04/2008 14:39

If I put a skirt on DH asks me where I'm going

DrNortherner · 23/04/2008 14:40

I feel uncomfortable in scrufs unless I'm slobbing out at home.

Oblomov · 23/04/2008 14:41

I can do both/all. I am most comfortable in slobbers. I am comfortable in smart trousers for work. I can get dolled up to the nines for a party and feel great.
I think I break the rule. No change there then !

Tommy · 23/04/2008 14:42

I wore the same jeans, t shirts etc post birth with DS1 and 2 (and in between!) and then when I finally got down to my ore babyweight I bought a lot of "smarter" clothes and I did feel abit dressed up at first but then loved my new look!

Alas, I am now back in jeans and t shirts as post natal woth DS3 (well - 14 months post natal anyway ) but not for long as I have started slimming world again. I'm really looking forward to geting back into my smart clothes

SoMuchToBits · 23/04/2008 14:44

Oh, yes, totally agree about make-up Mrs B. I hardly ever wear it, so when I do, I feel really self-conscious. Although I think this is partly due to the fact that when I was a teenager, and trying make-up for the first time, my Mum would make sarcastic comments when I put any on, and also my dh doesn't really like me wearing it, and will make some comment like "I see you've got your war-paint on" if I wear it.

NotABanana · 23/04/2008 16:51

If I wear a skirt or dress the children always notice and say I look pretty.

Tommy · 23/04/2008 16:54

LOL notabanana. DS1 was pretending to put lipstick in the bath once and said "Now I look like Mummy" I asked when he's ever seen me wearing lipstick and he said when I go to "pretty places"....

pinkspottywellies · 23/04/2008 16:59

I'm the same with clothes. I also love hats and people also say I look good in them but I always feel like I look like I'm trying too hard. I usually wear a bit of make up but anything more than the natural look and I feel like a clown!

scattyspice · 23/04/2008 17:02

I have never been a dress-up girl.

Somuch - Take absolutely no notice of yur DH (he is quite rude I think).

NotABanana · 23/04/2008 17:49

My DH doesn't like lippy but if I feel like wearing it I will be tbh I usually prefer not too so I can kiss the kids!

ColumboGoesBananas · 23/04/2008 19:13

The makeup thing is so true...after buying new makeup the other day I practically ran home to wash off the "clown face" I had been given by the sales assistant...bumped into a friend on the way home who didn't really notice it even after I had made a joke about it.

When I was nannying and wore a bit of make up or a skirt the kids would look at me and ask where I was going!! The dad perved a bit too.
