If you only could have 3 knitwear pieces…

Which ones would you chose / keep? The hardest workers in your wardrobe that also make you feel good?

I literally have one good jumper and need to invest. Looking for feedback on shape and colour as most versatile to inspire my searches .

My three most worn pieces are:

  • grey merino round neck jumper (quite fitted) OR grey 2 ply cashmere crew neck (both serve same purpose). Good for spring, cooler summer days and layering when it gets cooler
  • patterned jumper - fair isle style (all over) in muted colours that suit my casual wardrobe (dusky rose/willow green/ bit of brown).
  • cacoon cardigan in olive. Great for throwing on and laying over other woolens in the house.

I find these pieces the most versatile in my wardrobe based on my colours, colour of wardrobe and lifestyle.

Good question. I couldn’t pick but i would say three very well worn and useful items in my wardrobe are:

cream oversized alpaca Arket knit which goes with everything

black wool crew neck Cos cardi

pale grey mohair &OtherStories jumper

A more recent purchase I have not yet worn but would like to throw in the ring is an alpaca blend v-neck cardigan from Sezane, in olive green. It’s super chunky so it hadn’t been cold enough for it yet.

Princessfluffy · 10/10/2024 13:04

I'd go for pink, burgundy and cobalt blue.
I love a turtleneck or a crew neck as those suit me best, oversize/chunky don't work for me.

What colours form the backbone of your wardrobe OP?

FemmeFemme · 10/10/2024 13:11

@Princessfluffy Black, blue, grey bottom parts. And a pair of beautiful wool mix dusky rose trousers that only look great with black, white or burgundy while I have none of these. No camels or warm beiges, cool tones only.

I have the budget but overthink everything and don’t buy in the end. The wind is blowing in my wardrobe.

Only 3 is tough as I'm pretty much a "jumper every day in winter" kind of person. But I guess then I'd go with one from each category?

So one slouchy, comfortable, everyday one in an actual colour. I have a couple of these currently in different colours, including one stripey one but if I could only keep one I'd keep one in green.

One cashmere jumper that's a bit smarter and a bit more structured, in a neutral colour to go with everything, for layering, that can be styled differently according to need and for a more wide variety of occasions.

One cardigan-style or non-jumper style. Current favourite would be one with buttons down front and stripes (although not actually a cardigan - the buttons are decorative) as it looks quite smart, works for work or client meetings but can still be worn with a pair of jeans.

ANagsHead · 10/10/2024 13:26

Only three? (Knitwear obsessive here.)

I have a maybe six or seven year old version of this, in a dark moss colour, with a better neck and higher slits at the sides. And mine’s not boiled wool, just heavy merino. Honestly, I scarcely take it off between November and April - it’s just my default sweater:

Studio Nicholson

And an earlier iteration of this in a colour that isn’t available now. Although I’m not sure it’s my most flattering sweater it works beautifully with a particular coat and a particular skirt to make a really rather fabulous outfit:

La Fetiche

Thirdly a huge Marni cable knit cardigan (Outnet bargain) that serves as a coat on cold, dry days (or evenings over a light dress) and looks best just flung over my shoulders.

All my other jumpers tend to sit quietly in the cupboard while these three get all my attention.

Princessfluffy · 10/10/2024 14:51

What about a burgundy jumper that works with your rose pink trousers?

Burgundy is the colour of autumn 2024 but will always be good for autumn.

EllaPaella · 10/10/2024 15:51

My three favourites are my Eribè Stoneybrek jumper, a neat grey cashmere jumper from The White Company and a Chunky knit beige oversized jumper from Cos.
I'm a jumper fiend though and would find it very hard to be parted from my two gorgeous Toast jumpers.. one a orange flecked Donegal jumper and the other a fairisle wool jumper in beige and grey.

Ariela · 10/10/2024 16:09

I have a really nice bright cashmere jumper from JL for best.
A M&S men's cotton one for everyday - it's hard wearing, and long enough to cover my back if bending over.
And an ancient, huge & comfy hand knit from years ago

Floisme · 10/10/2024 16:41

Interesting question. Ok I'm going to go for:

An old St Michael/ M&S navy lambswool V neck, nicely slouchy and my default day-to-day jumper.

An Eribe fair isle wool tank top, which I've only recently bought and can't bear to be parted from yet. Plus in extreme cold, it would work layered over the first jumper.

And thirdly, for more dressed up occasions, a round neck jumper with just a hint of sparkle from Pure Collection - not a place where I normally shop and I've not seen anything similar there since. It's celebratory enough to pass muster at Christmas but works the rest of the year too.

GettingStuffed · 10/10/2024 18:24

Mine are all years old and are all not made of wool, the though of it makes me itch. Mustard v neck with belt from M&,S about 20 years ago, ditto long v purple jumper, would probably be sold as a dress now and a black tube skirt from NAKD about 5 years old.

SheSawSeaShore · 13/10/2024 07:36

I also love knitwear so this is very difficult…I think I’d have to go for:

Black jumper from Genevieve Sweeney which was my biggest splurge ever but has been worn at least once a week during autumn/winter since I bought it…it’s got multi-coloured flecks in it which are so pretty and it goes with almost everything.

Boden jumper which has a sort of zebra effect pattern - description doesn’t really do it justice but it’s the perfect length (jumpers are often too long for me) and the pattern means it adds some interest to an outfit.

And I can’t decide for number 3 - either a jumper I’ve had for years from M & S which I love for its gorgeous purple colour, or a thinner merino wool crew neck from Uniqlo which is great for layering on cooler autumn days.

Onemorepenny · 13/10/2024 07:46

I love knitwear! I have a couple of items from Arket that have been real work horses for me.

E.g. something like this, easy to throw on anytime and looks good also for the office. https://www.arket.com/en_gbp/women/knitwear/cardigans/product.wool-cardigan-green.1235708002.html

I have a thicker version in navy

Then something like this
https://www.arket.com/en_gbp/women/knitwear/crew-neck/product.alpaca-wool-blend-jumper-green.1248555005.html

A couple of cashmere jumpers from John Lewis or marks and Spencer which round out my wardrobe nicely in a light spring green and a dark mottled green. I probably wear these the most.

I also like Cos for Merino wear.

Sjdjb · 13/10/2024 07:50

With your colours I’d pick a charcoal grey oversized open front cardigan. Throw on over anything and everything.
Then a navy round neck merino jumper.
One chunky knit heavy jumper in a colour you love to wear with jeans.

redtrain123 · 13/10/2024 07:57

i couldn’t do it. I love jumpers.

dudsville · 13/10/2024 08:21

I am also unable to do this! I have 7 cardigans. Two of them don't get as much wear but are useful under specific circumstances. I have 9 jumpers. They didn't get out much last year, since menopause I've been left with a higher body temp so the cardigans get used more, but I love them all.

Chickydoo · 13/10/2024 08:57

I am obsessed with knitwear. I have 70 cardigans/jumpers/sweatshirts etc.
I have been collecting them for 35+ years, so some are as old as me.

Choosing my 3 favourites is tricky!
A mocha coffee coloured cotton knit oversize jumper from lululemon
A Brora 4 ply chunky cardigan in French navy. (This is ancient) it's in perfect condition even though it's been worn 100's of times and no bobbling or pilling at all.
A DKNY wrap cardigan in black. This can act as a cover up, an extra layer, great on a plane, it has travelled the world with me. Actually I have 2 of them as I love it so much.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/10/2024 09:17

I'd probably plump for these three.

If you only could have 3 knitwear pieces…
Cantonet · 13/10/2024 10:07

I would go for Cashmere as anything else itches.
So one Crew Neck Cashmere Cardigan in a neutral Colour. One Crew Neck Jumper & a V Neck should cover most eventualities. New neutrals are Browns, Tans, Beiges with accent colours like Burgundy or Mustard. A Navy Cashmere Jumper is always useful, as less black is around this year.

theemptinessmachine · 13/10/2024 10:15

10/10 😂

redtrain123 · 13/10/2024 07:57

i couldn’t do it. I love jumpers.

This!! I'm getting a bit stressed just thinking about choosing only 3! That doesn't account for seasons, even. I mean I've got beautiful thick knits for deep winter (I'm not a heating fan), midweight for ordinary British winter, fine cashmere or cotton for cool spring and summer days....

As it's coldish today I'll go for:

Chunky cashmere belted cardigan in grey, stunning, thick, warm, goes over anything

Navygrey The Oversize wool sweater, workhorse, warm as toast

Any of several of the Cos thick cashmere sweaters, wore them constantly last winter

ErrolTheDragon · 13/10/2024 10:43

I used to love jumpers but they're impractical during menopause and I've somehow lost my fondness for them.
So I'd have cardigans. I prefer v necked usually, would definitely need a black and a navy. And then I'm currently liking a navy one with short (just above the elbow) sleeves for summer (or October in Nice which is where I am today...just finished packing alas)
