Skin care for children

My 8yo has decided she wants skincare. Any recommendations? I was looking at spots and stripes and a few others. I don’t want anything heavy or too grown up but she is convinced her friends have better skin and are using all sorts of products- this has not come from me at all.

I am very low maintenance myself but have excellent skin now so there is part of me that wonders if a lot of skincare is a con or if I’ve just been lucky genetically. I was pretty spotty as a teen though and probably chucked loads of crap on my face but now I only really use water and spf in the summer - no cleanser, toner or moisturiser etc.

What would others do? Get something gentle or hold off as she’s too young? I suddenly feel like everyone else is doing skincare and I’m sort of oddity that doesn’t know what I’m doing

My DD (8) has some and I've always used a Micellar cleansing water on her face as I think washing with soap can be too harsh. When she started asking for skincare I let her choose a few lip balms, a handcream and a moisturiser with SPF. She doesn't use them everyday but likes to put the 'skincare' headband on around once week and use the moisturiser. She also likes the kids sheet masks.

Bloody hell an eight year old does not need micellar water or even soap on the face, nevermind all the other shit you've listed!
Sorry to be so harsh.
Anyway "you do you" as they say.

She needs a clean face and it stops her from stealing mine when I'm not looking! No apology needed, each to their own !

At best I'd buy her some Moo Goo full cream moisturiser and some moo goo milk wash for her face. Very gentle.

Get her off Tik Tok.

Children do not need skincare. Nor do they need telling that they do need skin care.

If Tik Tok told her to dress like a 1970s hooker would you agree to that, too?

Parent fgs.

This

If a kid wants some very basic skin cream (child's farm or aveeno maybe) then yeah

But what these kids mean by skincare is the ridiculous 5 step (or more) ones that are really expensive

It's all to do with tiktok and I hate it

DaisyChain505 · 09/10/2024 18:18

No 8 year old needs skin care and the only reason she does is because I assume she’s been watching the brain rot that is tik tok.

be a parent and not a friend and put your foot down. Skincare in unnecessary and can be damaging to such young skin.

Well I can categorically say that my 8yo has never been on tick tock so it is not social media in our case. It is very much led by peers but it is interesting to know there is a broader social media push around these sorts of products and by extension the realisation that as much as you might control your own children’s access, you can’t do much to control what others are seeing and talking about.

Some of the more balanced posts have been really helpful especially advice re peer influence, doing things to fit in etc and where that goes.

Nothing.

By indulging this you are reinforcing that her value is linked to how she looks.

Fuck. That.

No 8 year old needs skincare. All she needs is a wet flannel to wipe her face morning and evening. In fact she doesn’t need a skincare regime full stop. When she starts wearing make up a mild cleanser and a bit of moisturiser is fine but other than that nothing.
