Generous 18th b'day gift of hairdryer/straightener - GHD, Dyson what?

Sittingontheporch · 08/10/2024 15:16

hello I have a very lovely but super insecure 17-year-old. Obviously we're working on the anxiety and I know consumer products are not the solution.

That said, it's her 18th coming up and we'd like to get her something genreous and useful that she'll be able to take with her when she goes to university.

Her hair is shoulder length and fine. Quite a lot of and a beautifyl colour it but very very fine. Almost straight, but not quite. She tends to use an ancient and damaging pair of Babyliss straighteners of mine as well as my good GHD hairdryer. Or her sister's GHD straighteners if she can get away with it.

I'm not into hair styling, I mostly airdry. Don't use any product. So I'm very befuddled by talk of miraculous Dyson de-frizzing properties etc.

What would you get her? What's going to be the most useful? Should she get some sort of hairdrying machine AND a straightening thingie? Her curly haired sister seems to have hair straighteners and a hair-straightening hairdryer...

Help from more knowledgeable people very gratefully received.

Just to add, if she had a famous hair twin it would be Emma Stone - hers looks thicker dd's but I'm guessing that unstyled they'd look the same and similar colours (but dd's is not dyed).

I've asked dd directly but she's as clueless as me! The sister is a different matter. Maybe I'll ask her (but they fight like cats in a bag so I don't know how helpful she'll be).

What about an airwrap or shark flex style?

ADHDHDHDHD · 09/10/2024 04:29

Or a Dyson airstraight?

flyingant · 09/10/2024 05:57

I love my Dyson hairdryer - it's super-fast and gets rid of frizz. I would also buy the Dyson cordless hair straighteners if I could justify the cost (waiting for my ghds to die). They're both really practical and likely to be used for years, whereas I think other types of stylers/curlers can be a bit gimmiky and less usfeul.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 09/10/2024 06:20

I think a hair dryer and a styler for max flexibility, personally I've always found the all in one will solve all your problems type things actually don't!

If she pinches sister's GHDs I'd go for those styling wise - she obviously likes them!

I'd get her a hairdryer too. Hair dryer wise I'd recommend this shark speedstyle - it's got different drying attachments and the one for straightening really does work if you want to dry and go, dries really fast too.

I've got a Dyson hairdryer and it's fantastic. I have very thick and very long hair. I don't think your daughter needs one of these and you should put out more money into buying the straighteners and buy a different hair dryer.

Lostsadandconfused · 09/10/2024 07:41

Dyson dryer with the smoothing flyaway attachment. She probably won’t have to use an iron to straighten her hair if she has this.

leia24 · 09/10/2024 07:45

My 14yo loves her Cloud 9 straighteners and whenever her mates use them they always say they are going to ask for them for xmas/birthday etc. She has wide plate ones as she has a lot of hair.

leia24 · 09/10/2024 07:48

I have a dyson air wrap and honestly it's not great for my frizz and my 14yo doesn't bother with it at all.

This is what she has and she loves it

Dyson hair dryer, love mine. It’s quiet, quick and doesn’t completely frazzle your hair. I actually prefer my cloud 9 hair straightener over my GHD’s as well.

User37482 · 09/10/2024 07:50

Two in ones just don’t work for me, I have thick hair, it’s quicker to dry and straighten to be honest.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 07:52

If she has fine hair there's no point getting the air wrap, it won't work

I'd say get her some GHD straighteners if she likes taking her sisters, but alternatively would you consider helping her get extensions? If done at the right salon they won't damage her hair and they're amazing.

Nitgel · 09/10/2024 07:52

Parlux hairdryers are ace

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 09/10/2024 07:53

I have an air wrap and completely love it. I do have a lot of hair though. I also have some GHDs for when I want my hair to be poker straight.

ManhattanPopcorn · 09/10/2024 07:56

I have fine hair. The air wrap left it dry and fizzy. A hairdryer and a straightener would probably be better.

ChocolateLemsip · 09/10/2024 08:04

Crikey, things have obviously moved on since I bought an electric hair product! My recommendation for ghd straighteners is therefore made without any knowledge of the extensive product range available now but they do last for years. I've only ever had two, and the first pair lasted over 15 years.

bittertwisted · 09/10/2024 08:18

I have lots of fine shoulder length hair
Wavy
And every hair implement under the sun 😂
The Dyson airwrap is by far my favourite for waves and curls

Friend has the Dyson corale, she has fine hair and it makes hers look perfect groomed straight shiny hair

Butterflyfern · 09/10/2024 08:24

I agree that the Dyson hairdryer is a great choice.

I probably have similar hair to your daughter, fine and straight. And the Dyson has genuinely made such a difference. I use the fly away attachment when I want to style it and genuinely don't need straighteners anymore (they were more for a smoothing effect anyway and it looks better and more natural when done with the Dyson).

I've not tried the airwrap etc but I would be wary, styles using tongs etc drop out of my hair very quickly, even when done by a professional, so I'm reluctant to stump up the cost to try

piccolorhinoceros · 09/10/2024 08:26

If her hair is fine she probably doesn't need anything too fancy to dry it. Bog standard hairdryer (I use a Tresemme hairdryer I bought about 7 years ago from TK Maxx!) and GHD originals. They'll be the most useful as she can use them to curl too due to the shape of the barrel (it takes some time to get the hang of that though).

Mickey79 · 09/10/2024 08:32

Sounds like she would get most benefit from hair straighteners if she uses some old babyliss ones of yours and ghd’s of her sisters when she can. So I’d go for ghd straighteners. The gift sets will be out now ready for Christmas and they do 15% off.

Sittingontheporch · 09/10/2024 09:08

Thank you all so much. I just saw tht the GHDs had a 30% reduction on Amazon prime day so got them. She's a bit malcoordinated so I think she'd never get the hang of the airwrap and it would be wasted. Not sure I would be able to either.

So she's got a pair of GHDs, so now I think I'll get her hairdryer alongside. Maybe one of the ones you've helpfully recommended.

REally appreciate your help.
