Very fine and thin hair styles for 50 year old

Currently it’s in a one length bob a bit longer than chin length. Due to a lifetime of under active thyroid and now the menopause my hair has become unbearably thin/fine, has no texture and just sits flat no matter what product I use in fact it’s better without but then I suffer from static.

I had a teams call yesterday and don’t usually blur my background but did as my office was a bit untidy and basically it blurred my hair like it didn’t exist leaving my face looking like a sad pebble.

Do I go short short and be done with it. Any styles that can still look a bit edgy. I have a fear of shorter ageing me but I think that is exactly what my boring crap Bob is doing now.

Same hair here - collagen and hair growth supplements with biotin have helped, so do highlights- middle age is expensive but my granny had a bald spot and mine was so thin in one place it was going that way…

Has anyone tried this?

It seems expensive, but not as much as some of the ones upthread.

I was wondering whether to try my grandma's trick of a weekly massage with olive oil, leave in overnight, but it is a bit messy 😐

Products

Clinically tested, stem cell-powered haircare for thinning, fine, or postpartum hair. Targets pattern hair loss, thinning, menopause, and volume loss.

@MelOfTheRoses I’ve not tried that one but Vida glow’s hair one has anagain in it as this one does and think that’s probably what did it. Usually you need to give it three months to see whether or not it’s helping.

I will take a look into the Anagain then. 👍

My hair has been hammered over the last couple of decades by an underactive thyroid, androgenic alopecia, major life stress and anaemia. I've had some success over the last couple of years with the following regime:

  • Regaine (religiously, daily)
  • A good multivitamin with minerals - make sure it has Biotin, selenium and zinc)
  • Prescription strength iron if there's any chance your bloods are below 70 for ferritin
  • Lots of protein, especially eggs for the amino acids
  • High strength collagen
  • Rosemary and clove water tonic (after daily washing, and 12 hours before I use Regaine) (homemade, recipe on google/youtube)

It all adds up to a lot of time and money but my hair looks OK now - I no longer feel self conscious if someone is behind me going down the stairs. But sometimes I think it would be easier and cheaper to shave it all off and buy a wig.

Any recommendations for supplements and collagen? Decades of an under active thyroid have wrecked my hair too. I am post menopausal and my hair is just so thin. I stopped colouring it during lockdown and it’s silver grey now and in a pixie cut. I’m so so bored with it. My hairdresser has no suggestions and just does the same thing every time I see her. I have wondered about a wig and having blonde highlights put in but worry about bleach weakening it.

@Doggymummar
please could you PM me the details of the hair consultant you see? I can’t seem to PM you. Thanks.

Has anyone managed to get a good hair piece - I can cope with my thin hair on a daily basis as I just tie it up but I can't get it to style into an updo. I was thinking of getting a hair piece that is either preformed so I just need to put my hair into a bun and clip it over or one that you add to bulk out a pony tail so you can then style it into an updo.

Lucinda Ellery is amazing & I highly recommend.

I’ve got Vida glow hairology (anagain) and their collagen which is marine. There are hybrid bovine/marine, marine only and vegan ones out there. I’ve had chucking goat marine collagen before, and I’m looking at elavate and ancient and brave.

on the whole I’d go for whatever was on offer but take the collagen consistently every day whichever one you’re taking. Same with the hair vitamins - off the top of my head, hair + me, nue, vida and beauty pie all do hair supplements.
