Hello again to everyone from the last thread, and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

Now that the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is upon us, it might be time to start considering our autumn and winter wardrobes.

Last year as well as discussing leather lace-up boots, vintage handbags, antique brooches and many other desirable items, we pondered how to successfully pursue a DA aesthetic at work, at the theatre and generally out and about (without straying into Carry On Librarian territory, as one PP memorably commented) Grin
I learned about the Wrong Shoe Concept, and the Third Thing Rule .. every day is a school day!

However DA is much more than clothes, and we also shared our favourite childhood books .. memories of robins leading us through gates into secret gardens, the fiery red-haired independence of Anne of Green Gables, and our longing to go to boarding school, get into scrapes and partake in midnight feasts.

Thanks to our erudite posters, we learned about romantic Scottish history exploits recorded in 18th century documents, and considered the injustice of male family members being able to lock up women whose emotions became inconvenient, as well as discussing many inspiring women both in RL and in film.

And we debated the most DA place we've ever visited .. Oxford and Edinburgh featured strongly; in fact there was a suggestion that a perfect place for our DA AGM would be The Witchery in Edinburgh ..

If curling up in a wing-backed chair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading Pride and Prejudice or A Room of One's Own sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes, that works too.

Mine are cheapies from Matalan. They have an elasticated back at the waist for my middle age spread and are so comfortable..

TressiliansStone · 22/03/2026 13:17

Now this is what I like to hear! Thank you.

Hope your lunch out is lovely!

weareallcats · 23/03/2026 10:57

Sounds lovely! I love reading a book and having a quiet drink alone.

I went to Cambridge for the first time yesterday - been to Oxford often, as I live fairly nearby - and really liked it. Dh and I ended up spending quite a while in the pub (The Mill and then the Town and Gown) playing a very silly cat based card game though - not sure whether that counts as particularly DA. But we did go to Evensong at Pembroke (my dd was singing - her choir had a choral scholarship mentoring thing) - yes, several drinks down 😬 - and then had drinks in the old library afterwards.

weareallcats · 23/03/2026 11:05

Posted too soon by accident! Favourite things:

A bookshop called ‘Bodies in the Bookshop’ only selling crime and horror.

Overhearing two young men introducing themselves to each other as ‘Tom’ and ‘Ollie’ as they started their shift selling river tours.

A busker with an electric guitar and a looper playing 90’s dance music.

Roast in the snug at The Mill.

A girl in a froothy white skirt, tweed blazer and 80’s headband wheeling a pushbike with a basket.

The people in the Toast shop were as snooty as they always are with dh and I (think we just look a bit scruffy) even though I happened to be in head to (not quite toe - shoes were from moi) Toast, including a ‘vintage’ velvet military style jacket that I am very pleased with.

There are huge chunks of pavement where your choice is either walking in the road or risk tripping over enormous tree roots.

It was a fab day!

Outfit! Phew what a monologue!

Hello!
I have just come on here to say hi, so was thrilled to see some new posts.

Just for a change, I've been mooching around old libraries. Chetham's Library and John Rylands in Manchester and the Bodleian, which is my old fave...

After a slight job change/wage increase I've bought myself a frivolous thing - a moon phase watch! I have always wanted one, and it feels wonderfully whimsical in an era of smartwatches and fitness trackers.

Your watch sounds amazing - share a link?

I have thoroughly rejected smartwatches and have a small collection of cheapish, but stylish, watches, that I really love. A friend of mine has a beautiful, very classic, Omega that he was given by a grandparent and wears one of those fitness watches - why?! He isn’t even very fit or interested in fitness!

WoolTweedArtandBooks · 24/03/2026 19:24

@Notsosecrethistory i would also be interested in a link to the watch! Congratulations on your raise 🥂(or is it more dark academic to raise this 🍸? Or maybe a 🥃)

Gorgeous!

weareallcats · 28/03/2026 10:30

I love it - how gorgeous!

Roastiesarethebestbit · 28/03/2026 20:03

Fab watch! I had one in the ‘moon and stars’ phase in the mid nineties.

lilybloomtoo · 29/03/2026 20:13

I have just dropped massive hints to DH for a moon watch for my birthday!!!

RunSlowTalkFast · 31/03/2026 15:04

Anyone have any suggestions for the best dark academia places to visit?

I've already been to Oxford, Cambridge, Athens, Rome and am going to Edinburgh later this year.

Would love to do an Autumnal New England road trip one day but mainly looking for UK/Europe suggestions at the moment!

Amazing! Let's hope he's paying attention.

@RunSlowTalkFast Edinburgh is perfect. York, Chester, Manchester (a couple of good libraries and cathedrals), Bath. Have you been to Howarth?

SqueakyDinosaur · 31/03/2026 17:18

I think a lot of cathedral cities would make good DA weekend destinations - Norwich is the one I know best.

Oh I've been to York too but was thinking of going again and combining it with some other Yorkshire locations like Haworth and Whitby 👍🏻

RunSlowTalkFast · 31/03/2026 17:41

I've not been to Norwich and it's only 3 hours away so definitely doable, I shall look into it, thanks!

That sounds perfect! I did look fairly recently to see if I could hop on the train to Whitby…I can’t, not from Warwickshire anyway)!

I know Cairo isn’t Europe, but I don’t think the flight is too different to, for example, Greece, and I think that would be very cool.

Coventry? 😁(I am local and am very fond of Cov). To be fair the cathedral itself is very interesting. Then there is a lot of history locally too - all the Shakespeare stuff around Stratford, two decent castles and a Georgian spa town.

Been to Cairo already too, I'm feeling rather well travelled right now!

Been to Stratford-upon-Avon recently but never been to Coventry or anywhere else on that part of the country either!

SqueakyDinosaur · 31/03/2026 23:10

Coventry is an interesting mix of medieval/Tudor/Georgian stuff with a lot of absolute Brutalist 50s/60s concrete, due to the heavy bombing in WW2. I have genuinely got lost in the centre within 50m of my destination thanks to the layout. TBH, it wouldn't be my first choice for a DA break!

I have sung in the cathedral, and it was a wonderful experience, btw.

TressiliansStone · 01/04/2026 00:55

It's a few years since I stayed there, but in York I can highly recommend* the House of Trembling Madness at 52a Stonegate. They offer one holiday flat of antique splendour and creepy stuffed animal heads; the other of 60s/70s psychedelia! Take your pick!

They run a pub/eatery of the same name at the front of the courtyard.
