Having sunglasses lenses replaced with prescription lenses

I am too short-sighted to wear non-prescription sunglasses and don't like contacts. I often see cool sunglasses with unusually shaped/coloured lenses, and was wondering how feasible it would be - and how expensive - to have them replaced with the same shape and colour lenses but with my hefty prescription.

Any recommendations/warnings?

You can get prescription sunglasses. IME they are expensive but not as good as your actual prescription glasses. It seems to be an issue of style over function.
Currently I have my prescription glasses made up with anti glare and the feature where the glasses go darker in sunshine. I just find it easier than swapping glasses around.
I suppose if you want large, statement frames you would have to ask your optician if it can be done.

@endofthelinefinally Thanks - I am concerned about them not being as good. I once had some prescription sunglasses (as the "get one free" deal when getting my normal glasses) but didn't really wear them as they felt a bit weird and not quite the same as the regular glasses even though they were the same prescription.

For some reason it is always statement frames that I am drawn to!

Try the Ray Ban website, you can do virtual try ons and they have all sorts of shapes and colours. Not too bad ££ either, lots of special offers.

It probably depends what sort of shapes you're talking about.

I dropped my non prescription Ray Bans on the floor and cracked one of the lenses, so I had the lenses replaced with prescription ones.

I imagine it might be more complicated if you want pink heart shaped lenses.

How hefty is your prescription? When mine was -20 I had to have tiny frames, even with the thinnest possible glass. With sunglasses you typically want them to be large in order to protect your eyes from all directions, so for that sort of prescription it's a non starter. If you don't want contact lenses, an alternative would be to look at some of the over the top sunglasses that are available.

Hurst i wear do this, I think they start from £50 to replace the lenses and you can post them in and they send back to you. Send them a message and I'm sure they can give you more information. I haven't used them myself but know someone who has

I have a pair of prescription sunglasses from Select Specs. Cost about £100 for aviator type frames, and I’m really pleased with them.
