Wide leg jeans/ trousers vs. Puddles

In my experience in my teens, puddles always won. How do we avoid soggy hems/ ankles/ (knees??!) if wearing wide leg jeans in the autumn rain?

This is why all my shoes in the 90s were massive chunky platforms, whether it was trainers (anyone else wear Acupuncture skate shoes??), platform sandals, black platform slides, or "loafers" that had at least a 2 inch platform with a big tread.

I embraced skinny jeans tucked into knee high boots with open arms when that style came around!!

I only wear them to work in winter, not out and about (I drive to work). It's annoying but they are definitely better kept for fine days.

Cobblersorchard · 30/09/2024 09:58

If you live rurally and need a lot of time in wellies they are sadly a complete waste of time.

I want some but mercifully haven’t found any to fit my short middle aged frame. Because I know they will be permanently wet and muddy and actually a waste of money. Sadly a skinny is the best look for long boots. I caught sight of myself in straight jeans inside wellies the other dayand I looked ridiculous 😭

Just to clarify my mention of soggy knees(!!), that’s because I used to wear grungy wide leg jeans, trailing behind me and getting ripped, slipping through puddles and all sorts.

My style now is much more ‘clean’ and smart but I can’t really see how the jeans won’t get all soppy if it’s a rainy day

I love wide legs but I feel no obligation to wear them in all weathers. When it's pissing down, I don't wear them, same as I don't wear a wool coat (which I also love). The beauty of jeans fashion at the moment is the amount of choice.

ViaRia01 · 30/09/2024 10:04

Haha ok these comments have helped - I’m not alone!
Yes we’re “semi-rural” so sometimes even if you drive somewhere you can’t necessarily reliably expect tarmac upon arrival.

it sounds like chunkier soles on shoes and a bit of consideration to the weather before getting dressed in the morning, are the way forward

I tend to revert to parachute pants and short boots when its rainy out.
I love my wide legs but they just arent practical for alot of A/W weather.

minipie · 30/09/2024 10:49

Yeah, you just don’t wear them in the rain.

Unlike the 90s other styles are now available!

I had the white Acupuncture skate shoes 😁

BusterGonad · 30/09/2024 14:17

But I can't recall thick soles, around 1997.

I don’t remember platform trainers other than Buffalos. Chunky suede trainers yes but not platform. I did however wear platform leather boots c 1996-2000

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 30/09/2024 15:37

I wore my wide leg jeans yesterday, dry paths but dog took off over grass. They were soaked to the knees. I had flashbacks to the 70s.

Xiaoxiong · 30/09/2024 15:59

Oh the memories are flooding back now...anyone have these Roxy platform trainers??

I'm pretty sure I had some massive platform trainers from Miss Selfridge as well.

BusterGonad · 06/10/2024 01:33

@Xiaoxiong no, I had none of those, I must be older than you as I was into the indie look, and the shoes you've linked are more the younger Spice Girls look.
