Work shoes for winter

I am looking for inspiration, please. For the office, it’s not mega smart but a bit old fashioned so no trainers or jeans.

id like something that I can wear on the always rainy school run and work so ideally leather and no skin showing. I tend to wear flat shoes and trousers - I’ll wear ankle boots with shorter dresses and skirts but I don’t think they look right with work trousers.

can anyone help please?

Personally I do think ankle boots look ok with trousers, depending on the style. What's your thinking as to why they dont ? They're certainly warmer in winter too.

Skykidsspy · 28/09/2024 15:40

It may be the boots that I have but they’re a bit chunky, they’re similar to these

I wear cropped wide legged trousers and flat boots for work a lot.

These are smart and somewhat weatherproof:

Grenson loafers

Similar idea here:

Lanx patent

These very slightly clumpier?

Cos loafers

Each of those brands also does shoes with a much flatter sole (less winter resistant though).

BuriedInTheBackYard · 28/09/2024 16:22

Watching, as I can’t seem to make boots and trousers work for office wear, either.

SpyOfHut6 · 28/09/2024 16:30

I wear loafers for work from here with dresses (mostly Cos) and trousers. I think that the details like the buckles or trim make them work with the style of dress I wear, I’m no fashionista though but I’m happy 😃.

Yeah I find most of my trousers don't sit right at the ankle with boots, so chunky loafers or brogues work better for me in winter. I've had good ones from Geox

Neveranynamesleft · 28/09/2024 17:19

@Skykidsspy look for a plain, all black slimline boot that comes further up your leg and with a small, plain block style heel. Sorry can't add pics ! I think the boots you have posted in the picture are more suited to jeans tbh. Maybe have a look on Vinted, plenty on there are new, still with tags.

JustToBeMe · 28/09/2024 18:18

For me personally, black patent Dr Martens 😉😬

The lanx ones are my favourites there, thank you.

I’m definitely not cool enough for DMs 😢

Another vote for black DMs.

I tend to wear them with thick tights and long sleeved dresses.

I have a long walk from the car which can get muddy. So having reliably waterproof boots that are easy to clean are worth the trade off for them not being as smart as I'd usually like.

I think this looks smart and works with trousers but I think it’d get trashed if I walked in them for the school run

A slightly cropped trouser and Chelsea boots? Loafers with black pop socks? Skin won't show and socks are no longer a faux passé.

Skykidsspy · 28/09/2024 20:35

Do you think these would work with trousers?

Yes I like those

Neveranynamesleft · 28/09/2024 20:54

Yes definitely. I really like those !
The pointy ones are lovely too but more for going out I would say.

SpyOfHut6 · 28/09/2024 20:56

They don’t look like they’d fare very well in wet weather OP. Ok if you never walk anywhere.

Neveranynamesleft · 28/09/2024 20:59

I think you are on the right tracks style wise. Look for a good sole for winter / rain / snow etc..

SpyOfHut6 · 28/09/2024 21:02

Have a look at Charles Clinkard, decent brands, I have got the Gabor biker boots, proper winter sole which looks new after a winter’s use. Just looked and they still sell them.

I think this is the tricky bit! The balance between smart and actually needing to be practical

What are your work trousers like? I also struggle with wide legs and boots, so I still wear skinny trousers tucked into DMs/Chelsea boots for winter (wide legs and trainers for dry weather).

It's a tricky one to manage if your office is reasonably formal, could you keep a pair of ballet flats/loafers/brogues at work and have more of a workhorse pair of boots for travel?

JustToBeMe · 29/09/2024 00:18

Skykidsspy

Course you can! I'm 58 and work in a primary school, on my feet most of the day.
Love my DMs
